High command reluctant to field CM Siddaramaiah from Chamundeshwari

New Delhi Apr 11: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is trying hard to convince Congress leadership to allow him to contest from Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency in Mysuru district despite the high command's reluctance.

Siddaramaiah, who wants to filed his doctor-son Yathindra from Varuna segment in Mysuru district, feels his contesting from the neighbouring Chamundeshwari seat will help in successfully launching the political career of his son.

Siddaramaiah, who was here to attend the screening committee meeting for the past two days, is learnt to have informed the party leadership that his move to contest from Chamundeshwari would be beneficial.

However, the party leaders do not share Siddaramaiah's views and they fear that the Opposition, mainly the BJP and the JD(S), might enter into a tacit understanding and field a strong candidate in Chamundeshwari constituency with substantial Vokkaliga and Lingayat voters. In such a scenario, the chief minister will be tied down to the constituency and not be able to campaign in other parts of the state, leaders feel.

The party is banking on Siddaramaiah's popularity and wants him to campaign extensively in the state ahead of the May 12 Assembly elections.

A suggestion has been made to him to contest for Badami seat in Bagalkot district as the constituency has a large number of voters from the Kuruba community, to which Siddaramaiah belongs.

However, the chief minister is learnt to have told the leaders that it would send a wrong message among voters that the ''CM is running away from the home district fearing defeat.'' He also made it clear that he was keen on contesting from Chamundeshwari as he wants his son to win in Varuna.

Political greenhorn Yathindra may require full support of his father as the BJP is toying with the idea of fielding party state unit president B S Yeddyurappa's elder son B S Vijayendra from Varuna.

Siddaramaiah also told leaders about S M Krishna episode during 2004 Assembly elections, when the former chief minister shifted from his traditional Maddur constituency in Mandya district to Chamarajpet in Bengaluru considering it a safe seat and, how he got bad press and the Congress finally lost power.

The party leaders, however, are learnt to have decided to leave the decision on contesting from Chamundeshwari to Siddaramaiah.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

Tirumala, Jul 16: As many as 14 priests of Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) were tested positive for COVID-19 in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday, said Anil Kumar Singhal, Executive officer, TTD.

Singhal also held a meeting with temple priests, health and vigilance officials today.

On July 14, Singhal held 'Dial your EO' programme at TTD administrative building conference hall wherein the EO addressed the devotees and media and informed that 91 TTD employees have tested positive for COVID-19 till date.

According to the Union Health Ministry, the state has reported 35,451 COVID-19 cases including, 16,621 active cases, 18,378 recovered and 452 deaths so far.

Bengaluru, May 22: Evacuation planes from Male in Maldives and Doha in Qatar landed in Bengaluru with returnees from Karnataka after they were stranded for two months due to suspension of international flights since March 23 and the extended lockdown, an official said on Friday.
 
"An Air-India flight (#0266) with 152 passengers from Male and its subsidiary Express flight (IX-0822) with 177 returnees and 5 infants from Doha landed here safely at 6.50 pm. and 9.05 pm respectively," an airline official told media persons in Bengaluru.
 
Both the flights are first from their respective countries to Bengaluru, bringing in returnees to the southern state in the second phase of the Vande Bharat mission, being carried out to evacuate Indians stranded the world over.
 
"As per the standard operating procedure and guidelines of the state health department, all the passengers were screened with thermal device and tested to ensure they were asymptomatic before leaving the airport," a nodal officer said.
 
The returnees were given a spare mask to wear all the time and a sanitiser to wash their hands.
 
"The luggage of all passengers was screened and disinfected before handing over to them after they completed formalities such as filling the self-declaration form and downloading of the Quarantine App for contact tracing later,” said the official.
 
The passengers were ferried from the airport in state-run buses in batches for 14-day institutional quarantine in hotels and resorts across the city.
 
The flights were the 6th and 7th flights to Karnataka, of the national carrier and its Express arm, which are operating the service to repatriate thousands of Indians, including distressed workers, migrants, students, senior citizens and tourists, stranded overseas.
 
Five flights have flown about 650 returnees till date from May 18-21 under the mission's second phase to Bengaluru and Mangaluru on the west coast. The passengers have been brought from Dubai in the UAE, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Muscat in Oman, Dammam in Saudi Arabia and San Francisco in the US.
 
The remaining flights to Karnataka will land in Bengaluru and Mangaluru over the next 12 days till June 3 from 9-10 more destinations the world over.
 
In the first phase of the mission from May 7-17, the airline and its arm flew 6 flights to the state from May 11-15, bringing in 800 passengers, including 623 to Bengaluru and 177 to Mangaluru from London, Singapore, San Francisco and Dubai.
