High Court reduces Cyanide Mohan’s death penalty to life in Bantwal case

Bengaluru, Oct 12: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday reduced serial killer 'Cyanide' Mohan Kumar's death penalty to life imprisonment in the rape and murder case of one Anita of Kolimane in Bantwal taluk.

The division bench of judges Ravi Malimath and John Michael Cunha modified the death penalty judgement passed by the trial court. They directed the prison authorities to not release Mohan Kumar until his death and also said that he would not be entitled to remission.

In 2009, Mohan Kumar, promising to marry Anita, took her to Hassan city from Bantwal, where he allegedly raped her. He then, reportedly, took her to a bus stand in Hassan asked her to take a birth control pill. Not knowing that the pill was laced with cyanide, Anita consumed it and she was found dead in a toilet at the bus stand.

In Anita's case, he had filed an appeal in the High Court against the death penalty and pleaded for a life sentence. However, prosecution pressed for a death penalty. However, the court absolved Mohan from the rape and abduction charges framed against him.

Out of 20 such similar crimes perpetrated by Mohan between 2003 and 2009, the alleged serial killer has been sentenced to life imprisonment in four cases, including the death penalty in three cases.

Mangaluru, May 30: Coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today recorded third covid-19 death as a 67-year-old woman from Bantwal taluk succumbed to the coronavirus at the district Wenlock Hospital, the designated Covid hospital.

The victim is said to be a neighbor of two women (daughter-in-law and mother-in-law) who died of the coronavirus a few days ago. 

On April 18 due to difficulties in breathing, she was rushed to Wenlock Hospital, where she was tested positive for coronavirus. Initially she responded to treatment. However, her condition started worsening earlier this week and breathed her last today evening.

Her daughter also has been tested positive for the deadly virus and she is currently undergoing treatment.

Mangaluru, Apr 1: Police have arrested a person on charges of spreading malicious comments against the Karnataka government staff engaged in the prevention of the novel coronavirus in the district.

City Police Commissioner Harsha on Tuesday tweeted, “One Nizam has been arrested and sent to judicial custody on court orders for spreading malicious content on social media through a platform idunammadhwani.. regarding various government functionaries engaged in anti-COVID-19 work and spreading rumours.”

New Delhi, Jan 24: A nurse from Kerala employed at a hospital in Saudi Arabia has tested positive for the deadly novel coronavirus, Union minister of state for external affairs V Muraleedharan said on Thursday.

The minister confirmed that about 100 Indian nurses working in the Saudi Arabia hospital were tested following the threat of coronavirus and one of them was found infected by the deadly virus.

Taking to Twitter, MoS (MEA) Muraleedharan said, "About 100 Indian nurses mostly from Kerala working at Al-Hayat hospital have been tested and none except one nurse was found infected by Coronavirus. Affected nurse is being treated at Aseer National Hospital and is recovering well."

Earlier in the day, he had said that he was in touch with the Indian consulate in Jeddah to provide all possible support to the nurses quarantined at Al-Hayat hospital.

"Spoke to @CGIJeddah on Indian nurses quarantined at Al-Hayat Hospital, Khamis Mushait, Saudi Arabia due to Corona virus threat. They are in touch with hospital management and Saudi foreign Ministry. Have asked our Consulate to provide all possible support", he had tweeted.

Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday wrote to the external affairs ministry seeking intervention in Corona outbreak among Kerala nurses in Saudi Arabia

"Corona outbreak among nurses in Azir Aba Al Hayat hospital in Saudi Arabia should be considered serious and necessary steps must be taken", he had said through the letter.

The chief minister had also requested MEA to communicate with Saudi Arabia to ensure proper treatment and protection for the patients.
