Hindi theatre not promoted like Bollywood movies : Padamsee

Jamshedpur, Dec 17: Indian theatre personality and ad filmmaker, Alyque Padamsee regrets that the Hindi theatres in the country could not be promoted like the celluloid ventures. "Today there is no Hindi theatre in the country and it had never been promoted like the Bollywood movies," who had portrayed Muhammad Ali Jinnah in the film Gandhi, said.

The ad guru was in the steel city to take part in a panel discussion on 'Hundred years of Indian Cinema-Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow' organised by the Centre for Excellence, Tata SteelBSE -1.53 % and city-based film society 'Celluloid Chapter' here last night. "We must have good director and good script that could inspire the masses," he said.

Rueing that Hindi theatre had never been promoted the way it should have, Padamsee said, "The Prithivi Theatre had been associated with many good Hindi plays." Padamsee, who headed the advertising company Lintas, also praised the Marathi theatre, calling it "very good and world class". "Marathi plays continue to attract audiences as they have good directors, professionals and even good plays bag prizes even now," About other regional theatres, he said "Tamil theatre is also good and once Bengal theatres too had good following but not now."

The theatre veteran had directed and acted in American playwright Arthur Miller's award-winning play 'Death of a Salesman,' 25 years after he first acted in it, in a lead role with Sabira Merchant. The English theatres still continued to draw huge crowd in the country because of scripts from abroad, he said adding that even "we (Indian) have good English writers today. Padamshee said he had plans to stage the 'Jesus Christ Superstar', running in parts of the world for last 40 years, in the country in October 2014.

Deepika Padukone should hire me: Ramdev

Indore, Jan 14: Yoga guru Ramdev has said that Deepika Padukone should hire persons like him for offering correct advice, days after the actress had visited Jawaharlal Nehru University in Delhi following the violence at the campus earlier this month.

"Deepika Padukone needs to study about political, social and cultural issues. She should understand more about our country. Only after gaining knowledge, she should take decisions. I feel she should have persons like Swami Ramdev for correct advice," Ramdev said at an event here on Monday.

On January 7, Padukone joined the protest at JNU after a masked mob entered the varsity campus and attacked the students and teachers with sticks and rods on January 5.

Several BJP leaders questioned the support extended by Padukone. On the other hand, the Congress threw their weight behind the actress for her stand.

COVID-19: Vidya Balan pledges to donate 1000 PPE kits to healthcare staff

Mumbai, Apr 25: Actor Vidya Balan has decided to donate 1000 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to the frontline healthcare staff across India.

In a video message posted on her Facebook page, the actor announced that she is also collaborating with celebrity shout-out platform Tring to raise money for additional 1000 PPE kits.

“In the war against COVID-19 our health care professionals are like our soldiers at the border fighting for our health and freedom. Just like we equip our soldiers for the battle we must do the same with our medical staff. There is a critical shortage of PPE for our senior doctors, residents, nurses and ward boys in their daily work.

“As a result, a lot of our hospitals are not functioning at full capacity. Join me in changing this now. I am donating 1000 PPE ktis to hospital and medical staff across the country. And I am pledging to raise money for another 1000,” she said.

According to a statement issued by the actor’s team, she has joined hands with Tring to provide additional 1000 PPE kits, in association with Manish Mundra of Drishyam Films and photographer-producer Atul Kasbekar.

For donations made through Tring, Vidya will be recognising the support of every donor by sending a personal thank you video message, and a chance for a two-minute video call with her.

Vidya said each PPE kit is worth Rs 650 (all-inclusive of delivery costs and applicable taxes) and it consists of one coverall laminated and waterproof, nitrile gloves, goggles, face shields, 3-ply surgical mask and shoe covers.

Oscar winner Alfonso Cuaron to executive produce Marathi movie 'The Disciple'

Mumbai, Aug 2: Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuaron has come aboard as an executive producer on filmmaker Chaitanya Tamhane's movie The Disciple. The Marathi feature is set to represent India at the 77th edition of the Venice Film Festival. It will be screened in the Competition section of the prestigious film gala.

The movie, which is Tamhane's follow-up to his National Award-winning feature Court, has also been selected for 2020 Toronto International Film Festival's official line-up.

"I met Chaitanya through a mentorship program where I had the opportunity to watch his very superb debut film, Court I was immediately impressed by his sense of cinema and fearless confidence to tell stories.

"He was part of most of Roma's process and I jumped to the opportunity to be part of the process of his second film The Disciple. I believe Chaitanya is one of the most important new voices of contemporary cinema," Cuaron said in a statement.

Tamhane said he is honoured to have Cuaron aboard the film.

"It’s a bit surreal and an incredible honour for me to have one of the most recognised and acclaimed filmmakers in the world be part of 'The Disciple'. In some ways, this validation from Alfonso Cuaron is even more," he added.

The Disciple, a 127-minute long feature, stars Aditya Modak, Arun Dravid, Sumitra Bhave, and Kiran Yadnyopavit. It has been produced by “Sir” actor Vivek Gomber through his Zoo Entertainment Pvt. Ltd.

The Disciple marks Tamhane’s return to Venice after he won the Best Film - Orizzonti and Lion of the Future award for Court in 2014.

Court, a poignant commentary on India's judicial system, also won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in 2015 and was India's official entry for the Best Foreign Film at the 2016 Oscars.

Endeavor Content will sell North American rights and New Europe Film Sales boards the film as an international sales agent.
