Mangaluru, Jul 29: The Campus Front of India (CFI) has taken a dig at Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel for his silence over the suspicious death of a high school student from the latter’s home town.

15-year-old Kavya Poojary, daughter of Lokesh and Baby, residents of Devara Gudde in Kateel on the outskirts of the city, was found hanging on July 20 in the hostel room of Alva’s Education Foundation in Moodbidri where she was staying.

Even though the authorities of institution and police are treating it as a suicide case, the parents of Kavya have called it a murder and demanded a high level probe into the matter.

A delegation of CFI on Saturday visited Kavya’s house and expressed solidarity with her aggrieved parents. The delegation assured the parents that the students’ group would continue to fight for the justice.

Speaking to media persons on the occasion, Riyaz Kadambu, a CFI member, accused the DK MP of deliberately ignoring the case due to the latter’s friendship with the heads of the institution.

“Mr Kateel had threatened to set entire district on fire after a youth was murdered by his own sister and her paramour a few months ago. More than a week ago a girl from the home town of the same MP was found dead under suspicious circumstances. However, the MP did not utter a word so far,” he said.

“Kavya was also a Hindu girl. Being a self proclaimed Hindu leader, Mr Kateel must give justice her parents,” said another CFI activist.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: The Opposition Congress in Karnataka on Wednesday accused the BJP government, headed by Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, of showing discrimination in distribution of relief material to those affected by the lockdown, clamped to check the spread of Novel Coronavirus, by favouring constituencies represented by the ruling BJP Legislators.

Despite that, the party intends to extend full cooperation to the government during this hour of crisis without indulging in politics, it urged the administration to be “transparent”.

''We have had our (Congress) Task Force meeting today, during which we discussed several matters. There is a lot of difference between the government's talk and its deeds,'' KPCC President D K Shivakumar said.

Kalaburagi, May 16: Former Karnataka Minister Dr Sharanprakash Patil, who was booked for violating COVID-19 imposed lockdown guidelines said on Friday that it was "politically motivated".

"It's politically motivated, the officer who filed the case was forced by MLA or some other people. As elected representatives, we're going in the constituencies, listening to people as they're apprehensive about the return of migrants. We had not conducted any meeting. Wherever we have gone we have followed social distancing," Patil said.

Patil said, "When I had gone there people came to discuss about a local problem and I was talking to an official concerned. In the meantime, some officer gave a complaint that we have violated the lockdown or something."

"They are trying to curb the voice of opposition because there are a lot of lacunae. We hear complaints about quarantine centres that there is no proper facility for food, or stay, or bathrooms," the Congress leader said.

The FIR was registered on Thursday against 23 persons, including the former MLA and 21 local Congress leaders, under Section 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Congress leader Patil and his followers had conducted a meeting at a convention hall in Sulpeth town on May 13, following which sectoral magistrate Muneer Ahmed lodged a complaint.
