Subramanya (DK), Oct 25: A day after a local leader of Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) was assaulted allegedly by the aides of Chaithtra Kundapura, a firebrand figure of ‘Hindutva’ over a religious controversy, a massive protest was held on Thursday at Subramanya, a temple town in Sullia taluk of Dakshina Kannada district.

Guruprasad Panja, Sullia taluk secretary of HJV was hospitalised on Wednesday night after he was attacked with an iron rod following a heated on-camera argument with Chaithra on the street.

Chaithra, a young journalist-turned-Hindutva chauvinist, who is known for her aggressive Kannada speeches, had reportedly earned the wrath of a section of local Hindus by criticising the ritual of ‘Sarpa Samskara’ at Kukke Shree Subrahmanya Temple.

Affectionately called as “tigress” among her followers in coastal Karnataka, Chaithra had in fact endorsed the stance of Samputa Narasimha Mutt. This had reportedly led to mudslinging between her and HJV leader on social media.

On Wednesday evening, Chaithra along with a group of supporters confronted Guruprasad and his aides at Kashi-katte near Subramanya. Amidst the heated exchange of words between two groups, one of the men in Chaithra’s group hit Guruprasad with an iron rod.

The police, who reached the spot after the climax, took Chaithra and her supporters into custody. A profusely bleeding Guruprasad was taken to a private hospital for treatment.

On Thursday, hundreds of local Hindu took out a protest rally at Subramanya and raised slogan against Chaithra and demanded action against her. Most of the shops were remained closed in the town in the day in response to the bandh call given by the HJV against the attack.

Bengaluru, Mar 11: Did Congress party’s Man Friday, DK Shivakumar, not rise up to the occasion and save the situation for the party, whose rebel MLAs were flown into Bengaluru to unsettle the Kamal Nath-led government in Madhya Pradesh? Shivakumar told The New Indian Express on Tuesday, “So far, I have not got any clear direction on what has to be done. But I am in touch with the central leaders. The party does not want to antagonise them... They are our own MLAs.”

He said that the Tenth Schedule, which makes defections illegal, is very strong. “It is not so easy for them once they are expelled. There are courts and then they have to get re-elected. It is not easy to get minister’s post after getting re-elected,” he added.

When pointed out that rebels from the Congress and JD(S) who joined the BJP have got re-elected and become ministers, he said, “There are other issues here.”

Asked about Digvijay Singh, who is at the centre of the controversy in MP and who was AICC general secretary in-charge of Karnataka, not being able to prevent the rebellion in his home state, Shivakumar said, “I do not want to comment on any of our national leaders.”But he was confident that the Congress government would be saved in MP. “I am aware of the developments and keeping track of them,” he said.

Congress leaders seemed wiser after the event.

One of them, who wished not to be identified, said the party clearly did not see the writing on the wall. “Jyotiraditya Scindia supported the BJP at the Centre when it scrapped Article 370. Later too he was not in line with the Congress position on several issues. But during the recent Delhi violence, he criticised the BJP, sending confusing signals,” he added.

In another image the bus is stationed at a tourist spot. All these photos were captured during the bus’ maiden international journey in 1957.

An image of the bus ticket is also making rounds on social media, that shows the route of the bus — London, Belgium, West Germany, Austria,Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, West Pakistan, India. The route in India followed Delhi, Agra, Allahabad, Banaras and finally Calcutta.

The ticket shows that a one side travel cost 145 pounds (13,644 Rupees at the present day) back then, and it was inclusive of all the luxury provided during the run.
