Udupi, Nov 8: Around 2,500 sants and sadhus are expected to participate in the Dharma Sansad to be held here from November 24 to 26, according to M.B. Puranik, general secretary of the Reception Committee of the three day meet.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Puranik said that besides attending the Dharma Sansad, the sants and sadhus were expected to turn out in large numbers because this was the historic fifth Paryaya of Vishwesha Tirtha of Pejawar Mutt.

But accommodating such a large number of sants and sadhus was a challenge. Already, the reception committee had made arrangements for accommodation of about 1,200 sants and sadhus in houses.

But another 800 sants and sadhus had to be accommodated. Members of the Hindu community in the city should voluntarily come forward to accommodate these holy men.

This was not the first time that such an appeal was being made. He recalled that when the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) held a convention here in 1968, such an appeal was made to people to host the sadhus and sants. The people of the temple town had voluntarily come forward and accommodated them, Mr. Puranik said.

P. Vilas Nayak, president of district unit of the VHP, said that ideally such houses should be located within a 15-km radius of the city so that the sants and sadhus could be brought to the venue of the Dharma Sansad daily during the three days of the convention. It would be the responsibility of the house owners who hosted the sants and sadhus to bring them to the venue and take them back on the three days.

Those interested in hosting the sants and sadhus, may call the following phone numbers: 0820-2524641, 9060526477 or 9945363495, he said.

Bengaluru, Apr 7: Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Siddaramaiah on Monday urged Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa to announce a special package to help farmers, agriculture labourers and also working class in various sectors who are affected by the lockdown.

Mr Siddaramaiah put forth his demands during a telephonic conversation and the Chief Minister positively responding to it informed that he will formulate a programme keeping in mind the suggestions made by the Opposition, a statement from the LoP's office said.

It said, the Chief Minister also spoke to Mr Siddaramaiah regarding the government's decision to stop supply of free food for poor and needy through Indira Canteens.

Mr Siddaramaiah on Saturday had written to Yediyurappa urging him to utilise Indira Canteens efficiently and provide food for poor and needy until the coronavirus crisis and lockdown is over.

The former Chief Minister's letter had come a day after the state government had decided not to provide free food at Indira Canteens as concerns were raised about the quality and misuse that was happening.

It had, however, decided to continue to provide subsidised food- breakfast at Rs 5 and lunch and dinner at Rs 10, as usual.

Mr Yediyurappa during the phone conversation on Monday appraised Siddaramaiah that the decision to supply food by fixing a price was taken to stop misuse that was happening.

Mr Siddaramaiah, however, insisted the government should provide food free of cost to the poor and needy, by taking care that misuse doesn't happen.

The senior Congress leader asked the Chief Minister to take action against errant officials who allowed misuse to happen, the statement said, adding that Yediyurappa has promised to look into it.

Initially, the government last month had decided that the state subsidised Indira Canteens would provide food packets free of cost to the poor and needy in the wake of the lockdown.

New Delhi, Jul 9: The Central Board of Secondary Education has strongly defended its decision to drop topics like democratic rights, citizenship, federalism, secularism etc in the name of reducing the syllabus for Classes 9 to 12 due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The board has claimed that the dropped lessons "are either being covered by the rationalised syllabus or in the Alternative Academic Calendar of NCERT".

The CBSE said it had to come up with the clarification after realizing its decision was "interpreted differently".

"The rationalisation of syllabus up to 30 per cent has been undertaken by the Board for nearly 190 subjects of class 9 to 12 for the academic session 2020-21 as a one-time measure only. The objective is to reduce the exam stress of students due to the prevailing health emergency situation and prevent learning gaps," it said.

While it has said that no questions can be asked from the reduced syllabus in the next board exams, the CBSE has also directed schools to follow alternative calendars prepared by the NCERT.

"Therefore each of the topics that have been wrongly mentioned in media as deleted have been covered under Alternative Academic Calendar of NCERT which is already in force for all the affiliated schools of the Board," it clarified.

On Wednesday, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee tweeted: "Shocked to know that the central Government has dropped topics like citizenship, federalism, secularism and partisan in the name of reducing CBSE course during the COVID crisis."

"We strongly object to this and appeal the HRD Ministry to ensure these vital lessons aren't curtailed at any cost," Banerjee added.
