Hindutva outfit demands release of accused in Gauri Lankesh murder

Hubballi, Jul 25: A hardline Hindutva outfit has demanded the release of suspected saffron extremists arrested in connection with the assassination of journalist-activist Gauri Lankesh.

Dozens of activists Kranti Sena staged a protest in front of the tahsildar's office here on Tuesday and demanded that they are released immediately.

The Sena leader Vitthal Pawar said that the special investigation team has arrested “innocent” saffron activists Parashuram Wagmore, KT Naveen Kumar, Sujith Kumar, Amol Kale, Amit Degwekar, Manovar Yavade and Mohan Nayak. The SIT also arrested Baddi and Miskin in Hubballi.

"Though the youths were not involved in the murder, the SIT has arrested them illegally. Hence, they should be released immediately," he claimed.

The activist also said that the families of the arrested youths are poor and struggling to make the ends meet. He also warned of intensifying the protest if they are not released.

It may be recalled here that Baddi, 27, and Miskin, 28, were arrested on Sunday evening. Both the youths are friends. While Baddi is a small jeweler, Miskin is an entrepreneur involved in agarbatti business. With the arrest of the duo, the total number of arrests in connection with the murder has taken to nine. Both the suspects are in 14-day SIT custody.

Bengaluru, Jul 9: The M Chinnaswamy cricket stadium and the Bengaluru Palace in Karnataka will be converted into a COVID-19 care centre, informed the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Thursday.

The Bangalore International Exhibition Centre was also recently converted into a COVID-19 care facility by the state government amid the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

R Ashoka, the state's COVID management in charge said, "People of Bangalore need not panic. All necessary equipment and preparation are being arranged by the state. We have over 600 ambulances ready to take care of COVID patients."

As per the data from the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Karnataka now has a total of 28,877 COVID-19 cases, including 16,531 active cases and 11,876 recoveries.

470 people have died of the infectious virus in the state so far.

Mangaluru, May 12: The Karnataka government has ordered that Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts be considered as one unit for the movement of people to undertake permitted activities between 0700 hrs to and 1900 hrs.

Principal Secretary and Member Secretary, Karnataka State Disaster Management Authority, T K Anil Kumar, in an order, said that there was no need for different passes for commuting by people between these two districts.

However, people should carry their identity cards issued by their respective enterprises/ companies to show that they are carrying out permitted activities only, he said.

Bengaluru, Jul 20: Karnataka Minister for Primary and Higher Education S Suresh Kumar today said that the results of the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) Examinations, held amidst Corona threat, will be announced in the first week of August.

Speaking to newsmen on Monday after visiting the evaluation centres in the City, said that the work is in full swing and it was proposed to announce the results by end of first week next month.

He said that the evaluation of the answer sheets are set to take another 10-12 days. Currently, evaluations of the answer sheets are taking place at 220 centres in the State.
