Mangaluru, Jul 7: Violating the Section 144 of CrPC imposed by the district administration hundreds of Hindutva hardliners on Friday staged a massive demonstration at BC Road in Bantwal taluk in protest against the recent murder attempt on an RSS activist.

Several leaders of Sangh Parivar including Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, Karkala MLA Sunil Kumar, MLC Ganesh Karnik, who were among the protesters, were arrested by the police for violating the prohibitory orders.

It is learnt that the police have also booked over 500 agitators under sections 143 and 149 of IPC for the illegal protest and violation of ban orders. The timely action of the police brought the situation under control in the tense hit town.

The protest was organised by the Hindu Hitarakshana Samiti, a local umbrella body of saffron outfits to denounce the Tuesday’s attack. 28-year-old local RSS activist Sharat was attacked by a group of unidentified assailants just stone's throw away from Bantwal Town police station on Tuesday night. He is still in critical condition.

The police had repeatedly warned the Samiti against going ahead with the protest that was adjourned several times in the past due to extension of ban orders. However, the Samiti used the attack on RSS activist as a pretext to violate the ban orders.

Traffic blocked

Meanwhile, the police temporary blocked vehicles from moving towards BC Road as part of precautionary measures. Vehicles that were heading to BC Road from Mangaluru were blocked at Farangipet, while the vehicles that were coming from Kalladka were blocked at Melkar. As a result the vehicular movement on National Highway 75 has been completely disrupted.

Mangaluru, Apr 28: Trucks carrying fish loads from Kerala will not be allowed to enter Dakshina Kannada district as the authorities are not being able to control the rush in markets, state Fisheries Minister and district-in-charge Kota Srinivas Poojary said Monday.

The deputy commissioner has been instructed to restrict the entry of fish transport vehicles from outside the district forthwith, in view of the difficulty in maintaining social distancing at the markets identified in the district, the minister told reporters here.

The coastal district has to take more precautionary measures to fight COVID-19 as the number of positive cases have risen in the last couple of days, he said.

Bengaluru, June 5: Under the leadership of trouble-shooter D K Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress is planning a political ‘ghar wapsi’ to bring back leaders who quit the party and also rope in those from other parties.

Shivakumar, the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president, has constituted a 12-member committee headed by former minister Allum Veerabhadrappa to liaise to anchor this effort to bring back people into the party fold.

The committee comprises of former legislators B A Hasanabba, Ajaykumar Sarnaik, Abhaychandra Jain, Satish Sail, Prafulla Madhukar, former MPs R Dhruvanarayan and BN Chandrappa, MLA V Muniyappa, former mayor Sampath Raj, Mahila Congress leader Kripa Alva and former KPCC general secretary V Y Ghorpade.

This move comes more than a year after over a dozen Congress MLAs defected and joined the BJP, leading to the collapse of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government. Also, several influential leaders quit the party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections last year.

The constitution of this committee also coincides with disgruntlement brewing within the ruling BJP.

“Many people who left the party and others have applied (to join Congress). Many have met me also. I felt it wouldn't be right for me to make a decision. So, this committee has been constituted,” Shivakumar said. “They will process all applications and send it to the KPCC.”

According to Shivakumar, any person wanting to join the Congress should accept the party’s leadership and its ideology. “Importantly, they should be first accepted by the cadre. If there's no acceptance from the cadre, then what's the point?” he said.
