HK Patil writes to Karnataka Home Minister over JSW Steel land row

Bengaluru, Jun 29: Congress leader HK Patil on Saturday wrote to Karnataka Home Minister MB Patil over Jindal Steel Works (JSW) land issue, stating that the Cabinet Sub-committee should look into it.

In the letter, Patil stated that the Cabinet sub-committee should ensure that the state's natural resources are protected.

He also mentioned that the committee, which is headed by MB Patil, should look into the opinion given by the Advocate General.

Earlier this month, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had alleged that BJP state chief BS Yeddyurappa had taken Rs 20 crore cheque from JSW Steel when he was the state's chief minister.

"I will discuss everything in the Assembly session. BS Yeddyurappa got a cheque of Rs 20 crore for offering land deal sale to Jindal Steel Works. I know the truth and I will speak," Kumaraswamy had told media on June 19.

Kumaraswamy's allegation came at a time when the BJP was attacking the Congress-JDS coalition government over the cabinet's decision to convert the lease of 3,667 acres of land in Ballari to JSW Steel into a sale.

It may be noted that last year, a CBI court had acquitted Yeddyurappa, his sons, son-in-law and nine others in the corruption case filed against them over alleged receipt of Rs 20 crore.

The BJP has alleged that the state government would get kickbacks once the deal is finalised.

Udupi, Jun 28: A student appearing for the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exams in Kaup taluk of Udupi district has tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection.

Officials of the Department of Public Instruction (DPI) and Udupi District Health and Family Welfare Department have confirmed the report. 

The 16-year-old girl had appeared for the Kannada and Mathematics exams on June 25 and 27 respectively. 

Her throat swabs were sent for testing on June 27 after her father tested covid-19 positive. Today she too obtained positive report.  

The student is unlikely to appear for the science paper on June 29.

Meanwhile, health officers have ruled out the possibility of subjecting other students to covid-19 test as all necessary precautions such as physical distancing and usage of sanitization were taken in the examination centre.

Chikkamagaluru, Jan 28: Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Public Works Govind Karjol on Tuesday said that he is ready to quit if the post asks him to do so to pave way for smooth expansion of the Cabinet.

Responding to a question from media persons on the issue here, he said he was ready to quit his post any time.

“If the party asks me to resign now, I will send back my official car and return by bus”, he added.

Further, he opined that there should not be efforts to seek a berth in the Cabinet based on caste.

“Putting pressure on the party based on caste is not right. The party will consider those who worked for the party and also take district-wise representation into account while filling up the vacancies”, he added.

Bengaluru, Jul 24: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) commissioner on Thursday issued a public apology after "local staff" sealed the doors of two apartments with metal sheets in a building where a positive case of COVID-19 was reported in Dommalur.

Earlier on Thursday, BBMP sealed doors of two flats near Dommalur, in a building wherein a COVID-19 case was reported. A woman with two children, along with an elderly couple stayed in those flats. After the woman tweeted about the incident, BBMP officials removed steel sheets from doors.

Taking the matter into consideration, BBMP Commissioner N Manjunatha Prasad, took to Twitter to express an apology for "over-enthusiasm" of his officials.

He tweeted, "We are committed to address any issues that result in stigma. Apologies for the over enthusiasm of the local staff."

He also said the BBMP is committed to treating all citizens with dignity. "I have ensured removing of these barricades immediately. We are committed to treat all persons with dignity.

The purpose of containment is to protect the infected and to ensure uninfected are safe," he tweeted.
