HM pulls up top cop over delay in action against HJV leader who abused Muslim cop

Mangaluru Sept 20: Karnataka Home Minister R Ramalinga Reddy on Wednesday reportedly took senior police officers to task for failing to take immediate action against Hindu Jagarana Vedike (HJV) leader Jagadish Karanth whos provocative speech sparked tension in the region last week. 

Delivering keynote address at a protest meet organised by HJV at Puttur on September 15, Karnanth not only tried to incite enmity between Hindu and Muslim communities, but also abused a Muslim Police Sub Inspector and threatened to parade him on a donkey. Though Karanth’s speech went viral on social media same day, the police did not take any action against him.

Ramalinga Reddy, who held a meeting with the senior police officers of the Western Range at the office of Mangaluru City Police Commissioner on Wednesday, reportedly asked Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police Sudhir Kumar Reddy as to why still no case was booked against Karanth. 

When the SP told home minster that legal the police have sought legal opinion, the latter asked him not to wait for legal opinion to take action against those who disrupt peace in the society. 

Later, responding to the queries of media persons, the minister said that an FIR would be filed against Karanth for his inflammatory speech.

Mangaluru, Feb 28: In a shocking incident, an engineering student has committed suicide on the railway track at the Someshwara railway station near Ullal on the outskirts of the city.

The deceased has been identified as S Rayagowda (23) from Belgaum.

It is suspected that he resorted to the extreme step due depression after love failure. Railway police are investigating the matter.

Bengaluru, Jun 20: Amid calls for boycott of Chinese products in the backdrop of Indo-China border face-off, former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy sought to know from the BJP government in Karnataka the status of the "Compete with China" policy brought during the previous JDS-Congress rule.

Boycotting Chinese products was not easy like sloganeering but required a creative policy and the coalition government's initiative was a model for it, he said in a series of tweets.

"After the border skirmish, some people got the realisation to boycott the Chinese products but during my tenure (as chief minister) a serious thought was given to it," the JDS leader said.

He was apparently referring to growing clamour for boycott of China-made products after a violent clash between Indian and Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in Ladakh left 20 Indian Army personnel dead early this week.

Mr Kumaraswamy said he had brought the Compete With China policy to effectively deal with the neighbouring country.

"My government's objective was to offer jobs to the local residents, snatch away market opportunities for China and discard the Chinese products."

"However, what has the present government done to our scheme? It is not known whether it is still continuing or not," Mr Kumaraswamy said.

The Kumarswamy government had identified clusters and earmarked Rs 2,000 crore for their development.

Manjeshwar, Jul 8: Manjeshwar police arrested a man with 10 Kg of Ganja while fleeing away from a checkpoint at Battippadavu last night.

The police said on Wednesday that since the vehicle did not stop they had to chase it and after going some distance the driver lost control over the steering and it met with an accident.

The police immediately arrested the accused and the ganja was found concealed in a gunny bag.
