Honour killing: Pregnant woman burnt alive over interfaith marriage

Vijayapura, Jun 5: In a suspected case of honour killing, a 21-year-old pregnant woman was burnt alive by her family members for marrying outside her religion in Gundakanala village of Muddebihal taluk in Vijayapura district on Saturday night.

burnt aliveThe deceased has been identified as Banu Begum. She had eloped to Goa with Sayabanna Sharanappa Konnur from Valimiki caste and married him. Konnur also sustained injuries in the ghastly incident and is battling for life in a hospital.

Banu and Konnur hail from the same village and had fallen in love. Banu's family was against the relationship. The family members had lodged a case against Konnur under the Pocso Act with the Talikote police.

However, two days after lodging the complaint, Banu eloped with Konnur to Goa and both of them returned to the village four days ago, after getting married at the sub-registrar's office in Muddebihal, police said.

After an enquiry, the police dropped Pocso case against Konnur. After coming to know of this, the relatives of Banu stabbed her and set her ablaze. They also assaulted Konnur and set him afire.

The police have arrested Banu's mother, sister, brother-in-law and brother in connection with the incident.

Her two other elder sisters and brothers are absconding, DySP Prabhugouda Patil said.

Mangaluru, Apr 26: Yet another covid-19 positive case has been reported from Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district. 

Health and Family Welfare Department's latest bulletin revealed that a 47-year-old woman from Panemangaluru in Bantwal was tested positive for the coronavirus. 

With this the total number of covid-19 infected people in Dakshina Kannada rose to 19 out of which 7 are from Bantwal taluk. 

According to sources, this woman was working as a sweeper in a private hospital in the city where a coronavirus victim from Bantwal was being treated before she was shifted to covid-19 hospital.

Bengaluru, Apr 26: Three new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of cases in the state to 503 as per Karnataka government.

There are 302 active COVID-19 cases in Karnataka presently, while 182 patients have been discharged, 19 deaths have been reported, state government informed.

The total number of positive coronavirus cases across the country are 26,917, including 20,177 active cases of the virus. So far, 5,913 patients have either been cured or discharged while 826 deaths have been recorded in the country, as per data provided by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: Yellow alert has been issued for Karnataka's Shivamogga, Chikmagalur, Hassan, and Kodagu for July 23 and 24.

Some areas of Bengaluru may receive light rainfall today, said CS Patil, Director, IMD Centre, Bengaluru.

He added that coastal areas of the state are very likely to experience rainfall from on July 23 and July 24, and that rainfall may increase July 24 onwards. Widespread rainfall is predicted for July 24th, 25th, and 26th.
