Hosszu stamps her authority

Kazan, Aug 4: Hungary's Katinka Hosszu underlined her status as the leading all-round swimmer with a world record in the women's 200 metres individual medley at the World Championships on Monday.

KatinkaOn a day when two other world records fell -- to Sweden's Sarah Sjostrom in the 100 metres butterfly final and American Katie Ledecky in the 1,500m freestyle heats -- 2014 Swimmer of the Year Hosszu powered to gold in two minutes 6.12 seconds.

The 26-year-old shaved 0.03 seconds off the previous mark set by American Ariana Kukors at the 2009 World Championships.

Japan's Kanako Watanabe took silver, 2.33 seconds behind Hosszu, while Britain's Siobhan O'Connor claimed bronze.

"Obviously, the record was on my mind, it was my goal," Hosszu told reporters. "It was just perfect."

Sjostrom set her second world record in 24 hours in coasting to the women's 100 metres butterfly title.

Her time of 55.64 seconds broke her previous mark of 55.74, set in the semifinals on Sunday when she became only the second woman to dip below 56 seconds.

"I am really happy I could show myself, show that I can swim fast even with all of that pressure," she said.

Ledecky clocked 15 minutes 27.71 seconds in the 1,500M to beat her previous world best set at the Pan Pacific Championships in August 2014.

Britain's Adam Peaty secured his first world title in the men's 100M backstroke after a whirlwind 12 months on the international scene.

The 20-year-old world record holder claimed gold from Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa in 58.52 seconds, overtaking the Olympic champion in the final three strokes to win by 0.07 seconds and add to his European and Commonwealth collection. Ross Murdoch, of Britain, won bronze.

"I turned and I saw his feet and I though 'right, I've got some catching up to do now," said Peaty, who holds the world record of 57.92 seconds.

"With 25 metres to go he was still out in front but I have trained for moments like this."

Florent Manadou of France won the men's 50M butterfly, touching in 22.97 seconds to beat Brazil's Nicolas Santos.

Mitchell Larkin of Australia will be favourite to win the men's 100M backstroke after qualifying fastest for Tuesday's final, so too compatriot Emily Seebohm who advanced to the women's 100m backstroke with the fastest time.

American Ryan Lochte qualified fastest for the men's 200M freestyle final.

New Delhi, Aug 5: Indian cricketers Suresh Raina and Harmanpreet Kaur were on Wednesday appointed as the global brand ambassadors of the WTF Sports.

Raina is also joining the brand as a Strategic Partner. WTF Sports, a fantasy sports gaming platform, was today formally launched in India and globally.

The announcement was made through a web conference with prominent cricket host, Vikram Sathaye moderating and hosting the webinar and Vinit Bhatia, Manit Parikh and Yash Kadakia Co-Founders - India and Global, WTF Sports introducing the cricketers as the Global Brand Ambassadors.

Kaur said it was a perfect fit for her and she can use her strategy and experience while playing.
"WTF Sports was the perfect fit with me, I can use strategy and my experience while playing, I've actually learnt to strategize better as I've played along. Additionally, when we were under lockdown and I couldn't really practice, it was fun to come on the platform and feel like I'm still playing," Kaur said in a statement.

On the other hand, Raina said, "It is exciting to be a part of a fantasy sports platform like WTF Sports not just as an ambassador but also as the strategic partner, it is everything that I embody and what I believe in, it's fierce, fun and competitive."

The app currently hosts three major sports, multiple playing modes, and exciting contests, ensuring that sports fans can get more skillful by letting them strategize and use their sports knowledge into rewarding behaviour.

Dubai, Jan 15: India skipper and batting mainstay Virat Kohli was on Wednesday named captain of the International Cricket Council's ODI and Test teams of the year, capping off a memorable season for the world No.1.

Apart from Kohli, there were four other Indians who were picked in the ICC's Test and ODI Teams of the Year.

While the Test team featured double-centurion Mayank Agarwal, opener Rohit Sharma, speedster Mohammed Shami and left-arm spinner Kuldeep Yadav found a place in the ODI side.

Kohli enjoyed a tremendous run in both the formats in 2019. The 31-year-old hit his seventh Test double hundred on the way to a career-best unbeaten 254 against South Africa in October last year.

It was a breakthrough year for opener Agarwal, who smashed two double tons, one century and went beyond the fifty-run mark twice. He hit a career-best score of 243 against Bangladesh in November.

Kuldeep, too, enjoyed a memorable year as he joined the golden list of bowlers with two hat-tricks. The chinaman claimed his second ODI hat-trick of his career against the West Indies last month.

In the absence of Indian pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, Shami rose to the occasion making the best in the business hop, skip and jump with his pace, swing and bounce through the season. He scalped 42 wickets in 21 ODIs over the last 12 months.

New Delhi, Feb 13: Sanjiv Chawla, a key accused in the match-fixing scandal involving former South African cricket team captain Hansie Cronje in 2000, was extradited from the UK on Thursday, Delhi Police said.

The 50-year-old British national, accompanied by a crime branch team from London, reached IGI Airport this morning, a senior officer said.

He is likely to be taken to the crime branch office for questioning, he added.
