Houthi attacks blamed on US inaction

Jeddah, Oct 17: The Houthi militias, which are backed by Iran, have — for the third time in less than a week — attacked US Navy in the strategic Bab Al-Mandab Strait, one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

Saturday night's attack came after the first one on Monday, Oct. 10. At that time, the US Navy said it was unsure if it was being targeted or if the attack was a mistake.

The second attack — on Wednesday, Oct. 12 — prompted the US military to respond with verbal warnings and limited strikes on Thursday. Three radar sites in Houthi-held Yemeni territories near Ras Isa, north of Mukha and near Khoka, were taken out.

Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said at the time that “the limited self-defense strikes were conducted to protect our personnel, our ships and our freedom of navigation.”

However, the Houthi militias — a radical religious group whose primary slogan is “Death to America” — remained undeterred and waged a third attack on Saturday night, firing a number of missiles at the USS Mason and other US ships in the Red Sea.

“The Mason once again appears to have come under fire from cruise missiles fired from Yemen,” Adm. John Richardson, chief of US naval operations, told reporters on Sunday.

The Mason was in international waters when multiple incoming surface-to-surface missiles were detected by the ship's crew about 3:30 p.m. EDT. No damage was reported to the vessel or other ships accompanying it.

A US official was quoted as saying by news agencies that an additional radars could have been used in the latest attack.

Saturday night's attack has eliminated all doubts that the attacks were a mistake or that the Houthis wanted to avoid a confrontation with the US.

In fact, the only one who seems to be avoiding a full-fledged confrontation is the US, thereby emboldening the Houthi militias — as rightly explained by Ali Khedery, formerly the longest serving US official in Iraq who is now based in Dubai.

Khedery blamed the recurrent attacks on America's lack of robust responses to such grave provocations.

“Due to the strategic missteps in the Middle East since Sept. 11 2001, by both US Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and their administrations, and because of the quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan, many jihadi groups have felt emboldened enough to threaten the US,” he told Arab News on Sunday. “These groups include Sunni jihadi groups, such as Al-Qaeda (Al-Qaeda in Iraq and Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula) and Daesh, and the Shiite jihadi groups, such as the Quds Force, Hezbollah, the Iraqi Shiite militias and now, most recently, the Houthis.”

“The reason these groups feel emboldened is because the Iranians, for example, working with Al-Qaeda and the Shiite militia groups killed and wounded thousands of American soldiers in both Afghanistan and Iraq without any major repercussions or reactions from the US,” he said.

“A message should have gone that the United States as a superpower cannot, and should not, be messed about by these Third World powers, such as Iran or even worse, by their militias and proxies,” said Khedery. “Unfortunately, a precedent was set when there was no major retaliation to the killings with impunity of American soldiers across Iraq. This led the jihadi groups to become more and more emboldened and that is why there is a situation such as the one in Yemen, where the Houthis feel that they can fire anti-ship missiles at the US Navy without any major response.”

A US State Department official opted not to provide specific answers to specific questions from Arab News. However, he responded with a statement which said that the US had indeed attacked three Houthi radar sites on Thursday in what he described as “limited self-defense strikes.” He added that these counter-attacks were conducted “to protect our personnel, our ships and our freedom of navigation in this important maritime passageway.”

The official insisted, however, that “the strikes were not conducted as part of the Saudi coalition's hostilities with the Houthis” and that “the United States continues to call on all parties in Yemen — the Saudi-led coalition, the Yemeni government, the Houthis and Saleh-aligned forces — to commit to an immediate cessation of hostilities and implement this cessation based on the April 10 terms.”

Salman Al-Ansari, founder and president of the Washington-based Saudi-American Public Relation Affairs Committee (SAPRAC), said one should call things for what they are.

“It is Iran that attacked the US Navy with rockets via its militia in Yemen,” he said. “We, as Saudis, believe that US security is an extension of global security.”

He said Saudi Arabia was very concerned at seeing the Houthis targeting the US Navy. “Saudi Arabia will always be committed to stand with its partner — the US — through thick and thin,” he added.

Kuala Lumpur, Feb 25: The government party led by Interim Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has rejected his resignation, urging him to continue leading it and the country, now shrouded in political uncertainty.

During an extraordinary meeting held on Monday night, the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (Bersatu) unanimously rejected the 94-year-old Prime Minister's decision, reports Efe news.

Mahathir, the world's oldest head of government, presented his resignation on Monday, later accepted by King Abdullah Pahang, on condition that he continue as Interim Prime Minister until a new government is formed.

That decision caused a domino effect that broke the Patakan Harapan (Alliance of Hope) alliance, formed in 2018 by four political parties that prevailed in that year's general elections.

Bersatu and 11 Popular Justice Party deputies announced their departure from the coalition, although they reaffirmed their confidence in Mahathir as Malaysia's political leader.

"We remain intact and prepared to build a party to face the difficulties," Marzuki Yahya, Bersatu Secretary-General, said after the meeting.

Confusion reigns in the country, with some local media claiming Bersatu and the 11 deputies Justice Party deputies intended to form a new government with opposition parties, including the historic Barisan Nasional coalition, under Mahathir's leadership.

Lim Guan Eng, Finance Minister and coalition member, said in a statement that the chief executive himself had informed him he had no intention of forming a coalition with Barisan, which suffered a historic defeat in the last elections.

A future government will need at least 112 of 222 parliament votes.

Mahathir returned to politics in 2018 heading the Patakan Harapan coalition to defeat his predecessor Najib Razak, marred by the corruption suspicions offenses.

To that end, Mahathir joined Anwar Ibrahim, a former political ally who fell out of favour in 1999 and was imprisoned five years on charges of corruption and sodomy, whom he promised to be his successor in power.

Islamabad, Jun 24: A plane crash which killed 97 people in Pakistan last month was because of human error by the pilot and air traffic control, according to an initial report into the disaster released Wednesday.

The Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) plane came down among houses on May 22 after both engines failed as it approached Karachi airport, killing all but two people on board.

"The pilot as well as the controller didn't follow the standard rules," the country's aviation minister Ghulam Sarwar Khan said, announcing the findings in parliament.

He said the pilots had been discussing the coronavirus pandemic as they attempted to land the Airbus A320.

"The pilot and co-pilot were not focused and throughout the conversation was about coronavirus," Khan said.

The Pakistani investigation team, which included officials from the French government and the aviation industry, analysed data and voice recorders.

The minister said the plane was "100 percent fit for flying, there was no technical fault".

The county's deadliest aviation accident in eight years came days after domestic commercial flights resumed following a two-month coronavirus lockdown.

Many passengers were on their way to spend the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Fitr with loved ones.

New Delhi, Jan 3: US aviation regulator Federal Aviation Administration on Thursday warned America's airlines and their pilots that there is risk involved in operating flights in Pakistan airspace due to "extremist or militant activity", according to an official document.

"Exercise caution during flight operations. There is a risk to US civil aviation operating in the territory and airspace of Pakistan due to extremist/militant activity," said the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in a notice to airmen (NOTAM) dated December 30, 2019.

The NOTAM is applicable to all US-based airlines and US-based pilots.

The US regulator said in its NOTAM that there continues to be a risk to US civil aviation sector from attacks against airports and aircraft in Pakistan, particularly for aircraft on the ground and aircraft operating at low altitudes, including during the arrival and departure phases of flights.

"The ongoing presence of extremist/militant elements operating in Pakistan poses a continued risk to US civil aviation from small-arms fire, complex attacks against airports, indirect weapons fire, and anti-aircraft fire, any of which could occur with little or no warning," it said.

The FAA said that while, to date, there have been no reports of man-portable air defense systems or Manpads being used against the civil aviation sector in Pakistan, some extremist or terrorist groups operating there are suspected of having access to these Manpads.

"As a result, there is potential risk for extremists/militants to target civil aviation in Pakistan with Manpads," it said.

The regulator added that pilots or airlines must report safety or security incidents - which may happen in Pakistan - to the FAA.

Pakistan on July 16 last year opened its airspace for India after about five months of restrictions imposed in the wake of a standoff with New Delhi.

Following the Balakot airstrikes by the Indian Air Force, Pakistan had closed its airspace on February 26 last year.

Pakistan in October last year had denied India's request to allow Prime Minister Narendra Modi's VVIP flight to use its airspace for his visit to Saudi Arabia over the Jammu and Kashmir issue.
