Bengaluru, Dec 21: A Bengaluru police officer of the IPS rank won the hearts of many anti-CAA protesters by making them sing the National Anthem and disperse from the venue peacefully.

"If you have faith in me and in what I say, you all sing a song with me", Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Chetan Singh Rathore told a group of protesters at Town Hall in the city centre on Thursday and made them render the Anthem - "Jana Gana Mana" along with him in chorus.

Explaining to IANS on Friday how he persuaded the protesters to disperse from the venue in view of the ban order under section 144 of the CrPC, Rathore said most of the protesters at the venue were driven by social media without a leader.

"As a majority of them were social media-driven and leaderless, I told them to beware of an unknown bad element suddenly becoming their leader, provoking them to turn violent and making them a part of mob mentality," recalled Rathore.

In a video clip that went viral in the social media on Friday, Rathore is seen exhorting the protesters to be careful of bad elements taking advantage of the volatile situation and creating a mob mentality to trigger violence or clash with the police, pointed out Rathore.

Heeding to Rathore's wise advice, several protesters lauded him for cautioning them about the bad elements in such gatherings and agreed to abide by his word.

The protesters clapped, whistled, cheered and shouted in approval to join the officer in singing the Anthem.

The protesters also chanted "Jai Hind" later and dispersed without a murmur.

"Organised protests have leaders or a strong leader who seek a solution or talk about their next course of action. In such a grave situation, people fight among themselves being in different groups. There were number of leaders in the groups but there was no interaction between those people," reiterated Rathore.

Rathore also said such situations are a recipe for disaster as anti-social elements with herd mentality take advantage and mislead even law-abiding citizens.

"Anti-social elements are talkative and impressive through their glib talk to woo crowds who accept them as their leaders and do what they say," he added.

Rather than allowing an evil person take undue advantage of the situation, the IPS officer wanted to check if they would listen to him.

Without using force, the protesters accepted him as their temporary leader and obliged him for a happy ending.

Mangaluru, Jul 4: Normal life was thrown out of gear as heavy rain under the influence of South East Monsoon started lashing coastal districts of Karnataka including Dakshina Kannada on Saturday.

The heavy rain is likely to continue till July 7, according to the meteorological experts.

The water level in Netravati river is increasing and district administration has warned the people living in the low lying areas and has asked them to move to safer places.

Owing to lack of storm water drains, water logging of the roads inconvenienced the motorists at KS Rao Road, Pumpwell, Bejai, and other areas.

The Met department sounded warning for fishermen not to venture into the sea observing that strong winds with speed reaching 50-60 kmph are likely to prevail over Southwest and West Central Arabian Sea till July 5.

Bidar, Mar 4: The Principal District and Sessions Court in Bidar, on Tuesday, granted conditional bail to five functionaries of Shaheen School management — Abdul Qadeer, Allauddin Pasha, Mehtab Sait, Bilal Inamdar and Abdul Khaleq — who moved anticipatory bail in a sedition case slapped against their school recently.

Conditions

Senior advocate B.T. Venkatesh from Bengaluru argued for the petitioners. Managoli Premavati Mallikarjuna granted bail on certain conditions, including execution of personal bond of ₹2 lakh each.

The sedition case was filed against the Shaheen School management for its children staging a play as part of their annual day celebrations on January 21, in which a character had allegedly delivered a dialogue against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

While Nazbunnisa, the mother of the child who had allegedly delivered the dialogue in the play, and Fareeda Begum, the headmistress of the school, were arrested, they were subsequently released on bail last month.

Mangaluru, Jan 15: Popular Front of India leader Mohammed Saqib came down heavily on Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha for justifying the Dec 19 firing which claimed two Muslim lives in the city.

He was addressing a mammoth crowd of around two lakh people, mostly Muslims, who had gathered at Shah Garden at Adyar in Mangaluru today to register their protest against CAA, NRP, NRC, besides police atrocities on Muslims in Mangaluru.

Criticising the way the commissioner handled the situation on December 19, he said the people have all the right to agitate when their citizenship is endangered.

“Two men lost their lives. Then Commissioner started releasing misleading videos (to justify the killing),” he said questioning the top cop: “Who are you? Are you a British?”

“What kind of doctor you are? You are a doctor in creating false stories,” he said whiling taking on the top cop for claiming that protesters had tried to storm the Mangaluru North Police Station.
