How long restrictions will continue in Kashmir: SC asks Modi govt

New Delhi, Oct 24: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre that how long it intends to continue with the restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of Article 370.

"How many days you want restrictions. It is already two months now. You have to come clear on this and you have to find out other methods," a bench headed by Justice N.V. Ramana said.

"You may impose restrictions, but you (government) have to review your decisions."

The court which was hearing various miscellaneous petitions seeking relaxation and other issues in the valley listed the matter for November 5.

Appearing for Jammu and Kashmir administration, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the court that around 99 per cent restrictions have been removed and the easing of restriction is reviewed on a daily basis.

He also told the court that the opening of the internet is directly linked to the spurt in terrorist cases in the valley. He further added that these issues have trans-border implications.

One of the plea filed by Kashmir Times Executive Editor Anuradha Bhasin has sought a relaxation of movements in the valley, while another one was filed by a child rights activist alleging illegal detentions in Jammu and Kashmir.

The court also directed the Jammu and Kashmir High Court to expeditiously decide on the plea filed by Asifa Mubeen challenging the detention of her NRI husband.

The court will also hear other pleas, including that of CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury challenging the detention of his party colleague Mohammed Yousuf Tarigami and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad's plea on the next date fixed for hearing

Idukki, Aug 8: Nine more bodies have been recovered from the landslide ravaged Pettimudi near Munnar in Idukki on Saturday. With this the death toll in the tragedy reached 26. Around 40 are feared to be still trapped under the debris or washed away.

The rescue operation by NDRF and Fire and Rescue Services that was stopped by Friday evening due to poor light and bad weather resumed by Saturday morning.

Horrifying scene prevailed in the area as relatives of the missing people screamed around in search of their beloved ones. As it is nearly 48 hours since the incident happened, the chances of recovering missing persons alive from the debris is becoming bleak. Three of the bodies recovered on Saturday could not be identified till evening.

Kerala Revenue Minster E Chandrasekharan, who visited the area on Saturday, said that search operation would be carried out until all the missing are recovered.

It was by around 11.30 pm on Thursday that landslide had hit the Nayamakkad estate of Kannan Devan Hills and Plantations. Settlement clusters of plantation workers where 83 persons were staying were reduced to debris as the huge rocks came bulldozing. Five of the residents were reported to be not in the spot while the mishap occured.

Meanwhile, heavy rains led to floods at many parts of the state. Red alert has been issued at Idukki, Malappuram and Wayanad districts for Sunday also. A total of 11,446 persons of 3,530 families were shifted to relief camps across the state, of which major chunk is at Wayanad.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that water level at most dams is increasing swiftly.

Mumbai, Jan 30: Speaking at an event, Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Abu Azmi's son and businessman, Farhan Azmi said that if CM Uddhav Thackeray will build lord Ram's Temple at Ayodhya then he will build Babri Masjid there. He said, "My problem is with Uddhav Thackeray.

I respect him a lot and if in Shiv Sena somebody really deserves respect, then it is no other than Uddhav Thackeray. He never runs a government and I don't think he is running his party correctly.

If being the Chief Minister, Uddhav Thackeray says he is going to Ayodhya on 7th March, I will also go with him. He will build lord Ram's Temple and we will build Babri Masjid."

New Delhi, Feb 13: Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has congratulated AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal for his party's stupendous victory in the Delhi Assembly polls, saying the people of the national capital will continue to benefit from his leadership.

Responding to the Dalai Lama's statement, Kejriwal in a tweet on Wednesday said, "Am humbled by the kind words and blessings from His Holiness The Dalai Lama. Thank you very much @DalaiLama."

Referring to the Happiness Curriculum for government schools in Delhi, the Dalai Lama said he has a deep admiration for the efforts the AAP government has made towards "shaping better, happier human beings with improved values".

"These measures will have a positive impact on children's overall education, as well as helping the poor to fulfil their dreams of improving their lives," he said.

He also lauded the AAP government's initiative to incorporate aspects of inner mental development into the school curriculum.

"Through such initiatives, you are showing a path to the rest of India," the Dalai Lama added.

In a near-repeat performance of 2015, the Aam Aadmi Party on Tuesday retained power with a stunning victory, winning 62 of the 70 assembly seats and leaving the BJP with just eight seats.
