How is party responsible for Haris fiasco, asks KPCC chief

Bengaluru, Feb 23: In what appears to be a damage-control effort, the Congress on Thursday distanced itself from the entire episode involving Shantinagar legislator N A Haris' son Mohammed Nalapad Haris.

Miffed that the Haris incident had dented the Congress' image ahead of the Assembly polls, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president G Parameshwara said it was wrong to hold the party responsible for acts carried out by individual members.

Haris' son Mohammed Nalapad Haris is the prime accused in a high-profile assault case and has been remanded in judicial custody.

"The Congress party is being projected in bad light. How is the party responsible? Someone just happens to be a Congress member. Definitely, it is embarrassing," Parameshwara told reporters.

While the Haris episode was raging, a video showing Congress K R Puram block functionary S Narayanaswamy spewing petrol inside a BBMP office went viral.

"We have expelled Haris' son and suspended Narayanaswamy. Any party worker indulging in such acts will not be protected," Parameshwara said.

Haris is a second-time MLA from Shantinagar constituency in Bengaluru. His prospect of getting the ticket to contest the upcoming Assembly elections will be reviewed in the backdrop of the episode involving his son, Parameshwara said. "While the case involving Haris' son and Haris getting the ticket are two different things, we will consult people through our observers. There's a process we have and if Haris comes through this process, he'll get the ticket," Parameshwara said.

Rahul tour

Congress president Rahul Gandhi is expected to bring up the Mahadayi river water sharing issue during his three-day tour starting February 24, Parameshwara said. "He may also talk about the government's effort to utilise 259 tmcft from the Almatti dam and overall development of the region," he said.

'BSY has not matured'

Parameshwara flayed BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa for calling Rahul a 'baccha' (child). "I thought Yeddyurappa has matured with age, given his political experience. But, he hasn't. It's wrong for a former chief minister to speak such a way about the president of an age-old political party," Parameshwara said.

Karwar, Aug 6: In a shocking incident, a 40-day-old girl child was murdered by her own parents in Sirsi town in Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district.

The accused are Priyanka (21) and her husband Chandrashekhar Bhat (42), residents of Ramanakoppa in Sahasrahalli in Yellapur.

According to police, the couple did not want a girl child and hence threw it into a well. The couple was arrested by the police the very next day.

The incident came to light after the child’s maternal uncle, Abhishek Jagadeesh Singh Choudhari, a resident of Rajeev Nagar in Sirsi, lodge a complaint with Yellapur police station. 

He had claimed that his sister Priyanka’s baby had been kidnapped and subsequently killed. 

Priyanka had claimed that she woke up around 2.30am on August 2 to find that her baby, Tanushri, was not in her cradle. Her husband’s family subsequently started searching for the baby, which they found dead inside a well. 

Choudhari suspected that Tanushri had been kidnapped, and had been killed by her abductors to erase any evidence of their crime.

Uttara Kannada superintendent of police Shivaprakash Devaraju constituted a team to crack the crime, and the cops, who subjected the parents to an interrogation, found that they were the culprits.

Bengaluru, May 17: Karnataka Government on Sunday decided to appoint Administrative Committees, to over 6000 Panchayat Bodies, in the state, who’s five-year term would comes to an end this month.

Speaking to the media here, the Karnataka Panchayat Raj Minister, K S Eshwarappa informed that the state cabinet met recently had favored to appoint committees which would replace the elected bodies.

Informing that there is provision in the Panchayath Raj Act to appoint the committees, he said that the concerned Deputy Commissioners of the district, would appoint the members, to the committee, who were eligible to be nominated to the committees.

Bengaluru, May 31: With places of worship expected to reopen on June 8, the Karnataka State Minorities Commission has released guidelines for mosques and dargahs, that include social distancing, temperature testing and compulsory hand washing.

Abdul Azeem, commission chairman said, "Everyone will have to maintain one-metre distance and carry their prayer mats. They will all be scanned and Farz prayers will be held for 10-15 minutes. Friday prayers should be completed within 20 minutes."

Distribution of tabarukh, shaking hands, and overcrowding inside mosques will not be allowed.  The Muzrai department also issued guidelines for temples, like mandatory face masks, sanitisation of sanctum sanctorum and thermal screening.

In a letter, the Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowment Department mentioned that while temple authorities and devotees should wear masks, priests, helpers and workers are exempt, in the core area of the temple.

"Devotees should be scanned using infrared thermometers at the temple entrance, and must be given hand sanitiser. The temple trust is expected to bear the expenses," it added.
