How teen Sachin bowled Anjali

November 6, 2014

Sachin Anjali TendulkarMumbai, Nov 5: It was at an airport where medical student Anjali Mehta saw the wonder boy of Indian cricket and was floored by the “cute looks” of Sachin Tendulkar.

She ran after him screaming “Sachin, Sachin”, much to the embarrassment of the 17-year-old Tendulkar. She even forgot about her mother whom she had gone to pick with a friend.

This story of love-at-first-sight was revealed by Anjali Tendulkar, wife of one of the greatest batsmen in world cricket.

She was speaking at the launch of his autobiography “Playing It My Way”. The first copy of the book was presented to Sachin’s mother Rajni Tendulkar by the cricketer himself.

“I had gone to pick my mother and then I saw him and my friend told me he is the wonder boy of Indian cricket. I told my friend, ‘Oh, he is so cute’. Then I ran after him and I forgot about my mother,” Anjali said.“Sachin was so embarrassed and did not even look at me.”

Anjali said she managed to get the number of Tendulkar after that, called him and was lucky that he picked her call.

“I called him and said I am Anjali and I saw you at the airport. He said he remembered me. When asked what colour I was wearing, he remembered that it was an orange colour T-shirt.”

Anjali, now a mother of two, said she was destined to meet him, since on two previous occasions she could have met Tendulkar but could not do so as she was not interested in cricket.

“He was there with Star Cricket Club and I was also there in England. My dad called me when the Indian team was playing. He wanted me to meet the boy who had scored a century but I said I don’t want to meet this boy, I am not interested in cricket. Maybe if I had met, I would have chased him when he was 15,” she said as the gathering listened to the love story with attention and amusement.

Anjali also revealed how Sachin was scared when she visited his house for the first time, posing as a journalist.

“He was a bit hesitant, he said ‘how can a girl come to my house’.”

Tendulkar said his sister-in-law guessed that something was fishy in the whole episode. “She asked me whether she was really a journalist or something else,” Tendulkar said. She had seen him giving Anjali chocolates.

Anjali also said it was difficult to be in touch with Tendulkar on tours as there was no e-mail, sms and the call rates were very expensive. And whenever she made calls, she would do so after 10pm, walking out of the campus, a stretch of which was always full of ‘goondas’ in the night, since the call rates were low only at that time.

“Writing letters was the best option in those days,” she said.

Anjali said it was she who informed Sachin’s parents that they wanted to get engaged since he was away in New Zealand. Tendulkar said telling his parents that he wanted to marry Anjali was tougher than facing the most fearsome fast bowlers.

“Indeed it was and that is how I had planned it. I was sitting in New Zealand happily and Anjali did it,” he said. Anjali said it was tough to be the wife of a cricket star. “People think it is very glamorous, but it is tough. Whenever your husband gets out early, India loses, you feel personally that you have done something wrong. And travelling with kids was never easy,” she said.

New Delhi, Feb 20: Grappler Divya Kakran on Thursday became the second Indian woman to win a gold medal at the ongoing Asian Wrestling Championship.

Divya, a bronze medallist at Asian Games 2018, earned her first gold by winning all her four bouts against Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Uzbekistan and Japan.

Her final bout against Naruha Matsuyuki of Japan was the closest one but she managed to outclass her opponent 6-4 to seal her name on the gold medal. The 68 kg category was played in round-robin format as only five wrestlers were in the fray.

India is likely to add some more medals to its tally when Nirmala Devi, Pinki, and Sarita go out to grapple for the yellow metal in their respective weight categories.

Three-time Commonwealth championship gold medallist, Nirmala Devi (50 kg) first defeated Munkhnar Byambasuren of Mongolia in the quarterfinals by 6-4 to reach the semis.

In the semi-finals, Nirmala got the better of Dauletbike Yakhshimuratova of Uzbekistan by 10-0 and will play against 2018 Under-23 World Champion Miho Igarashi of Japan for the gold medal.

Pinki (55 kg) started her day on a winning note against Shokhida Akhmedova of Uzbekistan by 12-4 in round 3 and lost to Kana Higashikawa of Japan to enter the semis where she defeated Marina Zuyeva of Kazakistan by a score of 6-0.

New Delhi, Jan 2: Thrilled after getting to know about Hardik Pandya and Natasa Stankovic's engagement, skipper Virat Kohli on Wednesday called it a "pleasant surprise".

Extending his best wishes to the newly-engaged couple, Kohli posted a comment on Pandya's Instagram post which read, "Congratulations H. What a pleasant surprise. Wish you guys great times ahead. God bless".

On the first day of the New Year 2020, Pandya announced his engagement with Serbian actor Natasa Stankovic.

The cricketer took to Instagram to share the photo with the actor and captioned the post: "Mai tera, Tu meri jaane, saara Hindustan. 01.01.2020 #engaged".

The couple got engaged in Dubai and were seen taking a ferry ride along with close friends.

On the work front, Stankovic was last seen in a song from the Bollywood movie The Body starring Emraan Hashmi and Rishi Kapoor. She had also made it to the finals of the TV show Nach Baliye with her ex-boyfriend Aly Goni.

New Delhi, Jun 3: Shuttler HS Prannoy has hit out at the Badminton Association of India (BAI) and has questioned the selection criteria for the Arjuna Award.

The shuttler has said that the players who have won nothing have been recommended, while the players who have medals to their credit have been snubbed.

His remarks come as BAI recommended doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty and men's singles player Sameer Verma for the Arjuna Award on Tuesday.

"Same old story. Guy who has Medals in CWG and Asian Championships not even recommended by Association. And guy who was not there on any of these major events recommended #waah #thiscountryisajoke," Prannoy tweeted.

Prannoy had been left out from the list last year as well and the shuttler had slammed the criteria then as well.

"If you ever want your name in the awards list, make sure you have people who will get your name to the list. Performance is least considered in our country. Sad state of our county but can't help it. Let go and just play until you can," Prannoy had tweeted last year.

Prannoy had won the mixed team gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and he also has a men's singles bronze medal at the 2018 Asian Championships.

On Tuesday, the BAI has also recommended the renowned National Institute of Sports (NIS)-certified coaches, S. Murlidharan and Bhaskar Babu for the Dronacharya Award.

Murlidharan has been working relentlessly for the growth and development of the sport in Kerala, besides being an able administrator.

He has coached the likes of Vimal Kumar, Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas amongst many other renowned former players.

He has also been a recipient of the Meritorious Service Award given by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) in 1996.

For the Dhyanchand Award, BAI has recommended the names of Pradeep Gandhe and Manjusha Kanwar.

Gandhe is a two-time Asian Games bronze medallist while Manjusha is a South Asian Games silver medallist.
