Humiliated by saffron hatemongers, college girl commits suicide; BJP activist arrested

Mudigere, Jan 8: The police have arrested a local leader of BJP’s Yuva Morcha on charges of abetting suicide of a college student in Mudigere of Chikkamagaluru district.

20-year-old Dhanyashree, who belongs to Hindu community, had committed suicide on Saturday after group of Hindutva chauvinists barged into her house and created ruckus accusing her of flirting with Muslim boys.

“We have listed five accused as per the death note. Among them police have nabbed Anil. We will arrest other accused too,” said Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai. Anil is an activist of Bajrang Dal and BJP Yuvamorcha.

According to the death note recovered from the suicide scene, Dhanyashree was upset as a gang of five Hindutva activists, including Anil abused, humiliated and threatened her.

“The five people had visited her home on Saturday evening and picked up an argument with the girl and her mother. The group had alleged that the girl was roaming with a Muslim boy and thereby she had become the cause of issues like Love Jihad. Upset over the development she committed suicide”, Mr. Annamalai told presspersons.

The police, after recovering the death note, registered a case of abetment to suicide. Two teams have been constituted to arrest those involved in the incident. The police have also recovered the girl’s phone for further investigation.

The police learnt that a picture where the girl was seen with the boy from another community was circulated widely through social media platforms.

“Many have made comments on the picture on social media platforms. We will arrest all those who harassed her either orally or through social media. We have taken the case seriously and our teams are working to arrest all the accused”, the SP said.

Bengaluru, Mar 3: Senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Tuesday said that the party's protest will continue until the Speaker will allow them to discuss BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yathnal's recent comments on freedom fighter HS Doreswamy.

"Our protest in the well of state assembly will continue until Speaker allows us to discuss about Basanagouda Patil Yatnal," Siddaramaiah said.

Congress MLAs staged a protest in the Karnataka Assembly and entered the well demanding BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yathnal's apology for his 'Pakistani agent' remark.

Earlier, Congress leaders on February 26 staged a protest on the same issue in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Vidhana Soudha.

Yathnal, on February 25, called Doreswamy a fake freedom fighter and a Pakistani agent while addressing the media. His comments triggered a controversy drawing sharp remarks from Congress and other parties.

Mangaluru, May 4: The district administration has set up seven check-posts to monitor those entering Dakshina Kannada from other districts and states amidst coronavirus crisis.

The check-posts are located at up seven check-posts at Talapady, Hejamady, Gundya, Jalsoor, Charmadi, Naravi and Kallugundi. 

According to Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh, all those who enter the district will be screened. Those who come from outside the district and state will be asked to remain in quarantine. 

As the relaxation is announced for 12 hours, the public should be cautious while venturing out of the house. Wearing a mask in public is mandatory in addition to maintaining social distance. 

Further, she said of the 24 cases reported in the district, only four had symptoms of breathlessness and others were asymptomatic. Of the nine active cases in the district, the condition of one patient is serious while two are likely to be discharged from hospital shortly, said the DC.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: Karnataka Forest Minister Anand Singh on Wednesday said that there was no criminal case filed directly against him.

When asked about PIL filed in the Karnataka High Court against him, Singh told media: "Some lawyer has filed a PIL against me in the High Court. I cannot stop anyone from filing the PIL."

"I have given my criminal record. There is no criminal case directly filed against me. My name is there in some cases but in 'others category'. We will see what happens," he said.

When asked about Congress leader Siddaramaiah's comments criticising him for being given the forest portfolio, Singh said: "I cannot comment on what he said against me as he is a former chief minister and very senior leader."

"Also the opposition always tries to make allegations against me. That is why he criticised me," he said.

Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly Siddaramaiah on Monday demanded that Forest Minister Anand Singh should either be expelled from the ministry or assigned a different portfolio.

A number of cases are pending against Singh including those registered under the Karnataka Forest Act.
