I am not a terrorist, says D K Shivakumar as cops prevent him from meeting rebel MLAs

July 10, 2019

Bengaluru, Jul 10: The high-voltage drama of Karnataka politics unfolded in Mumbai on Wednesday with Congress troubleshooter DK Shivakumar being prevented from meeting rebel MLAs in a five-star hotel.

Shivakumar, who is the water resources minister in the HD Kumaraswamy government, was also detained by the Mumbai police.

"What the BJP has done is completely undemocratic," he said after his release from the guest house of the University of Mumbai's Kalina campus where he was lodged for a few hours.

Shivakumar landed at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at around 8 am and headed straight to the Renaissance Mumbai Convention Centre Hotel at Powai around 9 am.

A tight security was in place at the hotel as the 10 MLAs who were lodged there had complained of threats from Gowda and Shivakumar.

The posse of policemen led by deputy commissioner of police Sangramsinh Niishandar told him that he could not be allowed as the hotel fears security issues.

The hotel administration also cancelled the hotel reservation of Shivakumar.

"I have a car, I have a reservation but I was not allowed in," he said,  adding that he was not a "terrorist" and have come to meet the MLAs.

"They are my friends, we have worked together...I want to meet my brothers....there were some issues,  some misunderstanding,  we are part of the same family...we want to clear it out,' he said.

Shivakumar, who was accompanied by a minister and two other MLAs, said that the MLAs have called him and wanted to meet him but they are being prevented.

"In have a heart, I want to exchange heart.....I have no weapons...I am an elected MLA...I am in public life for several years," he said.

He also said that an IPS officers can accompany him when he goes in - but all in vain.

His pleas went on deaf ears and the gates were closed.

However, a patient but defiant staged a sort of a sit-in outside the hotel and preferred to wait and watch - forcing the Mumbai police to clamp prohibitory orders.

Senior Congress leaders including Naseem Khan,  Milind Deora and Sanjay Nirupam rushed by his side.

He was then joined in by Mumbai Congress leaders and there were sloganeering and counter-sloganeering among Congress and BJP workers.

Around 2.30 pm, Shivakumar was detained and instead of taking him to the Powai police station drove him in a police van to the University of Mumbai's Kalina campus and lodged him in its guesthouse.

Around 5.30 pm, he was released. "The Mumbai police is deporting me back...I don't want to create a law and order situation," he said.

Shivakumar said that the government was safe and the MLAs will come back. "What the BJP did is completely undemocratic," he said.

Bengaluru, Feb 21: A young woman in Bengaluru was detained today for holding a placard saying ''Free Kashmir'' at a demonstration in the city to protest against the arrest of college student Amulya Leona who had raised pro-Pakistan slogans at an anti-CAA rally a day ago.

The arrested has been identified as Ardra Narayan, a 20-year-old student of an engineering college at Malleshwaram in the city's western suburb.

"Ardra Narayan is being questioned at the Silver Jubilee Park police station after she was whisked away from the spot and detained for holding the placard with ''Free Kashmir'' written on it," Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao said.

On a complaint by Sri Ram Sena activists, who were protesting against Amulya at the venue, the police booked a suo moto case against Ardra under sections 153A and 153B of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) for disturbing peace and harmony.

The placard also displayed ''Give Us Liberation'' and ''Freedom from India'', a Sri Ram Sena activist alleged.

The development comes a day after Amulya, 19, was arrested under section 124A of the IPC for sedition and jailed for 14 days for allegedly shouting "Pakistan Zindabad" at the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) rally at Freedom Park in the city centre on Thursday.

"We are trying to ascertain if there is any connection between Amuly and Ardra though she was alone at the spot holding the placard," Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) R. Chandrashekar told news agency.

Bengaluru, Jan 13: Though he submitted his resignation as leader of the opposition over a month ago, former chief minister Siddaramaiah continues as the face of the Congress in Karnataka.

However, this may change as All India Congress Committee (AICC) interim president Sonia Gandhi has summoned Siddaramaiah to Delhi for a final consultation over change of guard. Over the past month, there has been speculation over the possibility of Congress persisting with Siddaramaiah as opposition leader and either party troubleshooter DK Shivakumar or former ministers MB Patil, HK Patil or Eshwar Khandre replacing incumbent president Dinesh Gundu Rao. Both tendered resignations owing moral responsibility for the party's dismal performance in the 15 bypolls held last month.

In the past 24 hours, there has been talk of Siddaramaiah being asked to be the state unit president and vacating the other post for a young turk or experience legislator including the likes of Shivakumar who could be the face of KPCC by 2023 if he gets a clean chit from the ED in cases of money-laundering, etc. Seniors, including former KPCC president and DyCM G Parameswara and former minister HK Patil, are strong contenders to be leader of the opposition if Siddaramaiah is asked to vacate the post.

However, sources in the Siddaramaiah camp dismissed the possibility of him becoming KPCC president. "He has never aspired for the post and the high command is not inclined to do it," said a member in his camp.

Siddaramaiah may meet Sonia on Tuesday morning. It's still unclear if any other KPCC functionaries have been summoned. Sources said Sonia is scheduled to leave India for medical treatment on January 15 and wanted to complete the consultations about Karnataka. The high command has reportedly gone through reports submitted by party observers Madhusudan Mistry and Parameswara.
