Chitradurga Dec 27: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has rubbished the media speculations about soft Hindutva approach of Congress in poll-bound Karnataka while reiterating that he belongs to Hindu community and believes in secular ideology.

“I oppose the brand of Hindutva that BJP practices. I am devoted to the ideal of secularism. But I don't know what the 'soft Hindutva' you refer to is,” replied Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.

He was speaking to reporters who met him at Holalkere, Chitradurga district, Karnataka.

To a question whether he was afraid of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists because he had cautioned the Congress rank and file to be vigilant of their activities, the CM retorted: "Why should I be scared?"

"I asked my party workers to be careful of the RSS during election time to ensure that their activists do not cause communal flare-ups".

To another question regarding the boycott of the meeting with SC/ST communities slated for December 31, the CM said that he had postponed the meeting to January 13, 2018.

As for the section of ST communities protesting against the Sadashiva Commission's recommendations on reservations, on December 29, the CM said, "To protest is everybody's right".

To the demand to increase the reservation percentages, the CM said that soon a census would be conducted and steps would be taken based on it.

As for questions on the Mahadayi river water sharing dispute, Siddaramaiah said that he had written to Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar inviting him for talks.

"Mahadayi agitations are not against the Congress. They are against Yeddyurappa because he is lying to people," Siddaramaiah alleged.

Siddaramaiah said that he would convene a meeting soon to plan the Vishwa Kannada Sammelana at Davangere city this year.

Women’s satyagrah, human chain mark Martyrs’ Day in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Jan 30: A day-long ‘satyagrah’ by women followed by formation of human chain marked the Martyrs’ Day, the death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Mangaluru.

The organisers were ‘We, the People of India’, whose sole intention was to safeguard constitution of India and raise voice against those to attack the constitution.

Amidst nationwide agitation by ‘We, the People of India’ against contentious CAA, NRC, the women of Manglauru have decided to hold satyagrah and form a human chain in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner in the heart of the city on January 30.

The Satyagrah commenced at 10 a.m. At 4:30 p.m. a human chain will be formed. At 5.17p.m. when the father of the nation was gunned down 72 years ago during his evening prayer at Birla House by Godse, the demonstrators raised the slogan of unity to defeat the ideology of Godse.

Congress expert in dividing parties, purchasing MLAs: Kumaraswamy over BSP row

Bengaluru, Jul 29: A day after Congress staged a nationwide 'Save Democracy' protest, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy slammed Congress for "dividing" the political parties and "buying MLAs" and questioned their "democratic behaviour" to lure Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLAs who supported them.

Kumaraswamy, in a media statement, said, "Is it a democratic behaviour to lure MLAs of other parties through political shenanigans and later merging with them?"

"Congress is an expert in dividing political parties and purchase of MLAs," said Kumaraswamy adding, "If you are dividing the like-minded party MLAs through deceit, who would support you?"

He alleged that the term "horse trade" in politics came to be used because of Congress.

Congress had tied to divide the Janata Dal (Secular) in 2004. To this, he added, "To avoid the party being hijacked by the Congress, I had to oust the Congress-JD(S) coalition government through a political coup."

Kumaraswamy further accused, "Haven't the Congress who is making a big noise about the purchase of MLAs divided the JD(S) in the past? Is it not a fact that for the sake of one Rajya Sabha seat, the Congress government in Karnataka purchased eight JD(S) MLAs?"

Both -- Congress and BJP -- are "criminals" in purchase matter, he added.

Rajasthan Congress is in turmoil after simmering differences between Sachin Pilot and Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot came out in the open. Pilot was removed as the Deputy Chief Minister and the state unit chief of Congress.

The Congress has accused the BJP of indulging in horse-trading to bring down the Gehlot government. The BJP has rejected the allegations.

Nearly 30 injured as Mangaluru-Bengaluru bus falls into trench

Puttur, Jan 4: As many as 27 passengers travelling in a private bus escaped with minor injuries after it toppled and fell into a roadside trench at Amai near Perne on Mangaluru-Bengaluru national highway last night, police said on Saturday.

Police said that the driver of the Bengaluru-bond bus lost control over the vehicle while traversing through the narrow bridge at Amai.

The bus was damaged in the mishap.
