Bhopal, Aug 30: Asumal Sirumalani, also called Asaram Bapu, a preacher accused of child rape, targeted the Congress leadership during a visit to the city on Thursday.
Exiting the airport, he told reporters: “People tell me Madam and her son are framing me. This has been going on for the last four-and-a-half years. They support those involved in religious conversion.” But he evaded questions whether he would comply with the summons to appear before the Jodhpur police on Friday. “Jail for me is like heaven. But I don’t want to go there as I fear that they will mix something in the food or water, which will affect my brain... Saints are pressurising me. There are many who will rise, but I said keep calm.”
Asaram flew to the city in a chartered aircraft to attend the last rites of his son Narayan Sai’s father-in-law Krishnani, who died in the early hours of Thursday. Krishnani headed Asaram’s ashram on the outskirts of Bhopal.
At the airport and at the ashram, Asaram lost his cool with reporters — who were also heckled by his devotees — when they asked whether any party was supporting him. Asaram said no party supported him, and he warned reporters not to ask “mindless questions.”
In a statement, the BJP, without naming Asaram, accused the Congress of attacking saints while supporting Batla House terrorists to appease minorities. Party leaders in Madhya Pradesh Uma Bharti, Prabhat Jha, Kailash Vijayvargiya and Ramesh Mendola have come out in support of Asaram, whereas Ravi Shankar Prasad has said the law should take its own course.
At the ashram, Asaram said he does not have any enmity with any “foreign or Indian woman.” “There was a conspiracy to plant the girl’s dupatta in my room. People told me that she told her friends, on leaving my Jodhpur Ashram, that her deeds would shake India and she would become famous. The police are threatening her friends to testify against me... I am told this is a conspiracy by the Delhi Police [which registered the FIR initially].”
The Congress hit back, saying he was paying for his “misdeeds.” “He is attempting to cover his misdeeds. He is a monster in the guise of an ascetic. He should be hanged. There are dozens of cases against him in Gujarat... He faces land disputes at Ratlam and Indore. Will he blame us for this too,” asked spokesman Mukesh Nayak.
Jodhpur Commissioner of Police Biju George Joseph told reporters on Wednesday that he would send a team to arrest Asaram on August 31, if he failed to turn up for questioning on Friday. A senior officer of the Criminal Investigation Department here told The Hindu that the police were looking into cases involving his organisation. “If anything serious comes up, we will notify the Home Ministry.”

As many as employees of Zee News have tested positive for the coronavirus, Editor-in-Chief Sudhir Chaudhary said on Monday. Most of them are asymptomatic, he said, tweeting an official statement from Zee News about the situation.

The organisation said that on May 15, one of its employees tested positive for the coronavirus. Following this, the company started testing employees who may have come in contact with the employee. Twenty-seven more were found to be infected.

“Fortunately most of them are asymptomatic and are not complaining of any discomfort,” Zee News said. “We believe this is because of early diagnosis and proactive intervention.”

The news network said all guidelines and protocols have been followed, and its office, newsroom and studios have been sealed for sanitisation. The Zee News team has been shifted to an alternative facility.

“At the moment, Zee Media Corporation has 2,500 employees, by far the largest in the private sector,” the company said. “We are committed to the safety of each one of them.”

Chaudhary also claimed that “those who are infected had the option of sitting at home and sharing memes”. “They came to work because they are committed professionals.”

Following this, some social media users claimed that Zee News employees found infected with Covid-19 were still at work. In response, Chaudhary alleged that a malicious campaign was being conducted to distort his statement. He said no infected employee had come to work, and all the contacts of the employee who tested positive on May 15 had been tested and quarantined.

Over the past two months, journalists from several media organisations have tested positive for the coronavirus. On April 21, 26 employees of a Tamil news channel based in Chennai tested positive for the coronavirus. The previous day, over 50 journalists from Mumbai were found infected, after samples of over 170 journalists were tested.

On May 7, a newspaper journalist died of the coronavirus in Agra. Some states, such as Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka and Delhi, have tested journalists for Covid-19.

New Delhi, Feb 3: In the third such incident inside of a week, two unidentified persons opened fire outside Gate No. 5 of Jamia Millia Islamia on Sunday night, the Jamia Coordination Committee (JCC) said.

A statement issued by the committee, a group comprising students and alumni of the university formed to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act, said the attackers were on a red Rcooty.

No one was injured in the attack. One of the miscreants was wearing a red jacket, the statement said.

"Firing has taken place at Gate No.5 of Jamia Millia Islamia right now by two unidentified persons. As per report, one of them was wearing a red jacket and driving a red Scooty having vehicle no. 1532 or 1534," the statement said.

Police said they were verifying the JCC's claims.

Asim Mohammed Khan, former Congress MLA from Okhla, said the incident occurred around 11.30 pm. "We heard the gunshot. That is when we stepped out to see and the two men left on a Scooty," a student said.

"We have taken down the vehicle number and called police," he added.

This is the third firing incident in the Jamia Nagar area in a week.

On Thursday, a minor fired at anti-CAA protesters marching towards Rajghat, injuring a student.

Two days later, a 25-year-old fired two rounds in air in Shaheen Bagh in Jamia Nagar. No one was hurt in the incident.

The incident on Sunday night triggered panic in the area. A police vehicle had reached the spot after the incident but was chased away by angry students.

Hundreds of students and locals gathered outside the university.

Many raised slogans against the Delhi Police. They also staged a dharna outside the Jamia Nagar police station.

Shezad Ahmed, a JMI student and resident of Zakir Nagar, said they were not even allowed to protest peacefully.

"We are not going to be deterred by such incidents. We will continue with our protest," he added.
