I cannot tell you what Hadiya told me: NCW chairperson

New Delhi, Nov 6: Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW), on Monday met 24-year-old Hadiya, who had converted to Islam and married a Muslim man, weeks after a video emerged in which she pleaded to be rescued from her parental home in Vaikkom.

Sharma told reporters outside Hadiya’s home that she is in ‘good health’ and that she seemed happy. “I just met Akhila, Hadiya, whatever you call her. NCW was concerned about her well-being. She is in good health. She is not beaten up. She is eating her food and she was smiling,” Sharma told the media.

“She was happy. I cannot tell you what she told me because the case is in the court. Healthwise and security, she is okay. Her security is under no threat. She said she was okay and that she is waiting for 27th,” she added.

Hadiya, who had converted to Islam, has been asked by the Supreme Court to appear before it on November 27. The case of her conversion and marriage to a Muslim man is being heard in the top court.

The NCW chairperson said she will ‘use the word forced conversion’ instead of ‘love jihad.’ She is expected to submit a report on the situation of Hadiya’s security and safety after her return to New Delhi.

In an incomplete video purportedly taken in August and released to the media by social activist Rahul Eashwar, Hadiya had alleged that she was beaten by her father Asokan and begged for help. However, her remarks to the NCW chairperson today is in contrast to what she said in the video.

The state women’s rights commission had earlier sought the permission of the apex court to visit Hadiya at her residence in Vaikkom.

The Supreme Court last month had said that it could consider the contention of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Hadiya’s father, that she had been indoctrinated by radical groups and her consent was not free, only after it had talked to her.

Hadiya’s marriage to Shefin Jahan was annulled by the Kerala High Court on May 28 and her custody was entrusted to her parents.

Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh), May 19: Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband has issued a fatwa asking Muslims to offer their Eid prayers this time at home, instead of congregating at mosques.

The directive comes amid a nationwide lockdown to slow down the spread of coronavirus.

Despite the relaxations announced in the lockdown, religious and other large gatherings are still banned.

The fatwa was issued in response to a query put to the seminary, its spokesman Ashraf Usmani said.

The fatwa said the Eid namaz can be offered in the same manner that the Friday prayers are now being read at home.

It said not holding the namaz in the usual manner is pardonable in circumstances such as these.

Bengaluru, Mar 7: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday said that the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) will be completed within the next three years.

Speaking in the Assembly, the Chief Minister said: "After discussing with the officials of the finance department, we have decided to allocate Rs 10,000 crore funds for the third phase of UKP. This project will be completed within a span of three years."

Yediyurappa also said that the government will hold talks for additional funds from the Central government.

The leader of Opposition, Siddaramaiah, interrupted and said that the CM has announced this just to gain the confidence of MLAs from north Karnataka.

"The government could have announced it in the budget itself or else the Chief Minister could have announced it at the time of discussion on the budget. Where are the funds with the government to complete the project? CM has announced this just to gain the confidence of MLAs who hail from north Karnataka," said Siddaramaiah.

Deputy Chief Minister Govinda Karajol while speaking to the media welcomed the Chief Minister's statement and said that the earlier government didn't allocate a single penny in the last seven years he added.

New Delhi, Mar 2: The bloodthirsty arsonists allegedly hired by pro-CAA politicians in the capital of India to target Muslims, did not spare even the house of a Muslim leader of BJP.

Akhtar Raza, the BJP’s minority cell vice-president for the Delhi Northeast district, is now not in a position to share his pain with anyone.

Even the police hadn’t come to his rescue, when the mob raising “Jai Sri Ram” slogans burnt down his house at Bhagirathi Vihar Nalla Road in northeast Delhi last week.

“They were chanting slogans. Around 7pm, they started throwing stones at us. I called for police help. But the police asked me to leave. We managed to flee before they burnt my house and destroyed everything,” Raza, who returned today to witness the destruction, told media persons.

“Those who attacked us were not locals. They were outsiders. They managed to identify and burn down all the 19 houses belonging to Muslims in this lane,” Raza said.

Apart from all the belongings in the house of Raza, the arsonists also have burnt down six vehicles belonging to his family.

Raza is sad that no one from BJP contacted him after the violence even though he has been serving the party and promoting its ideology for past five years. “No party leader contacted me. There was no phone call. There was no relief or special treatment or anything,” Raza said.

Interestingly, Raza is still indentifies himself as a BJP leader. “I belonged to BJP. I may continue in the party,” he said.

The locality remained tense on Sunday too. On Monday, several groups distributed relief materials among people who had queued up to collect them. In front of Raza’s house is a lane from which several bodies of innocent Muslims have been recovered.
