Hassan, Apr 4: H D Kumaraswamy, Karnataka state unit president of Janata Dal (Secular), who had once formed government with Bharatiya Janata Party in the state, has urged the people to make him chief minister once again so that he can dedicate the victory to his father and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda!

Speaking to media persons here yesterday Kumaraswamy said: “I am blamed for spoiling the political future of my father. At least, for this reason, I have to become chief minister and dedicate the victory of the party to him."

He immediately added: "The Congress and the BJP have been criticising the JD(S) as the father-son party. What are the BJP and the Congress up to now? While Siddaramaiah is fielding his son Dr Yathindra, B S Yeddyurappa's son Vijayendra is being fielded from Varuna. What is their contribution to Varuna constituency?"

Continuing tirade against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah he said,  it will not be a surprise if the Congress gets only 25 seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.

"Siddaramaiah is diverting the people by issuing statements that the JD(S) will not get even 25 seats. According to the recent political developments, it will not be a surprise if the Congress itself gets only 25 seats," he said.

"The tactics of any political 'chanakya' will not work in the elections in Karnataka. The party's target is to win 113 seats and we will achieve it," Kumaraswamy said.

Commenting on Chamundeshwari constituency, Kumaraswamy said that it is very difficult for Siddaramaiah to win the elections. "He had won by a threadbare margin of 257 votes when he contested the polls from the constituency in the 2006 by-polls. Though we had won the polls, technically we had failed. This time, we have taken enough steps to ensure that such mistakes do not recur," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 25: The local police will provide security for Sri Nijagunananda Swami and his Kittur Nishkal Mantapa Mutt following a letter containing a threat to his life that was received on Friday.

The letter, containing the names of 15 liberal thinkers and activists, was circulated widely on social media and shown on some Kannada TV channels. The letter is addressed to the seer, and it condemns his lectures where he speaks in favour of liberal values.

“The decision to eliminate you will be taken on January 21. You will be eliminated, along with 15 of your followers and people who think like you,” the letter said.

Among those threatened are Nidumamidi Channammalla Swami, Jnyana Prakash Swami, the former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, actors Prakash Raj and Chetan Kumar, writer Chandrashekar Patil, Brinda Karat of the CPI(M) and writer K.S. Bhagavan.

It is not the first time that the seer is getting such threats. Two years ago, Belagavi Police had provided security to the seer following threats to his life. Last year, he got a phone call from a person from Shivamogga district. But the seer did not bother to complain.

This time, the district police will seek a written complaint from the seer. “We will assess the threat perception and the security levels. Adequate security will be provided,” the police said.

The seer is now camping in Jewargi in Kalaburagi district. “We have intimated the Kalaburagi Superintendent of Police of the need for immediate security arrangements. We will take steps to provide adequate security to him once he arrives in Belagavi district,” Superintendent of Police Lakshman Nimbaragi said.

Mangaluru, May 6: The Karnataka NRI Forum - UAE has collected the details of those seeking to return to Karnataka amidst coronavirus lockdown.

Of these, 121 of these expats are pregnant women, 27 are senior citizens, 157 are in urgent medical need, 522 are unemployed, 377 are in the UAE on visit visa, 109 are in the UAE on expired residency visa, 30 are students and 566 others.

On Tuesday, May 5, the Government of India released a list of flight schedules for the repatriation of Indians who are stranded abroad. "...sadly we do not see any flights going from UAE to Karnataka," the KNRI said in a letter to Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers D V Sadananda Gowda, who is also a Kannadiga.

"We, Dubai Anivasi Kannadigaru and KNRI have collected the information of those who are in dire condition and would like to travel immediately. We would like to bring to your attention that in this list there are pregnant women and senior citizens who are in critical conditions and are waiting to travel," the KNRI wrote, urging the Union Minister to start at least one flight to Mangaluru as the majority are from this coastal city and not from Bengaluru.

Additionally, in order to help these struggling Kannadigas, the KNRI has notified the Government of India and Government of Karnataka several times through letters and conference calls, along with the Kannadiga's helpline, UAE.

With the help of likeminded businessmen and professionals, the KNRI Forum and Dubai Anivasi Kannadigaru have opened a helpline called "Kannadigas Helpline" through which they have received around 2,500 requests for food, medical, legal and other assistance.
