I object to using of term Hindu terror or saffron terror: Rajiv Mehrishi

New Delhi, Aug 30: Outgoing Home Secretary Rajiv Mehrishi on Wednesday objected to linking religion with terrorism, saying there is no colour to terror and it is not right to describe it as "saffron" or any other colour.

Mehrishi, who will demit office on Thursday, also said Pakistan was fomenting trouble in Jammu and Kashmir but dismissed the theory that Kashmiris feel alienated as a "concept of Delhi media".

Mehrishi, who was appointed two years ago as Home Secretary, will be succeeded by senior IAS officer Rajiv Gauba.

It is speculated that Mehrishi may be given a post retirement job and will be appointed as Election Commissioner. There were also talk about him being appointed as Jammu and Kashmir Governor but he dismissed such speculation, saying he is headed to his home in Jaipur on Thursday.

Describing that there is no colour to terrorism, the 62-year-old bureaucrat said, "I object to using of term Hindu terror or saffron terror. There is no colour to terror."

Questions were posed to him following the Supreme Court granting bail to Col Srikant Purohit, an accused in Malegaon blast case that is described as a Hindutva terror case.

Mehrishi said it is for the courts to decide on whether the accused are innocent or guilty. "Terror is a terror. You can't connect it to any religion. No religion allows terrorism. Those who indulge in terrorism in the name of religion is only bringing a bad name to religion."

On Kashmir, he said more than 90% of Kashmiris want peace and progress and they have same aspirations as any other person in the country. "The view that the Kashmiris are alienated is a concept of Delhi media. We have problems in Kashmir due to Pakistan and radicalisation and terrorism are problems to be addressed," Mehrishi said.

He said the government can talk with Kashmiri separatists only if there is no pre-condition.

Mehrishi also felt that the probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on terror funding had an effect on those financing the subversive activities.

Mangaluru, Aug 7: A woman suffered critical injuries after a speeding car knocked down her scooter and then ran over her at Kadri Kambla Junction in the city today.

The woman identified as Vanishri Bhat (22) a resident of Kedila from Puttur. 

A CCTV footage of the accident, which went viral on social media, shows the car hitting the scooter, pushing the woman on road for a couple of meters before climbing over her.

The car stopped when she was under it. A few people including a policeman lifted the car from the front and rescued the woman. 

She was immediately taken to a private hospital in Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader’s car which was passing through that way. 

She has suffered critical injuries on her head, ribs, hands and legs, sources said. She is reportedly responding to treatment. 

It may be recalled that in December last year a lorry-auto accident at the same spot claimed life of a 56-year-old teacher while the auto driver miraculously survived. Following the accident, speed breakers were installed at the junction.

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Central Crime Branch (CCB) sleuths have nabbed a three-member Irani gang, including a woman and recovered from them 1 kg 33 gram stolen gold chains worth about Rs 40 lakh.

City Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao told newsmen here on Saturday that the arrested were identified as Abujar, Abdul Hussain and Ms. Jenia, all hailed from Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.

He said that the culprits, who had been arrested on similar theft cases, were out on bail and continued their criminal activities. They were involved in more than 23 cases.

Bengaluru, June 11: Amulya Leona, a college student, who was charged with sedition for raising "Pakistan zindabad" slogans in Bengaluru, has finally been granted bail. 

The court had denied her bail yesterday, saying she might abscond. But her lawyers had been pursuing another way of getting her out of jail where she has spent nearly four months.

Ms Leona's advocate, Prasanna R, said that the delay of the state in submitting a chargesheet in the case beyond the stipulated time meant she was eligible for "default bail".

"The default bail application was moved before the magistrate under whose jurisdiction the alleged crime was committed. The chargesheet has not been submitted by the state within 90 days. So default bail has been granted. We had moved the default bail plea on May 26 and again on May 29 when the court told us the earlier mail IDs had been disabled. A physical application was filed on June 2. The state filed the chargesheet on June 3," the lawyer said.

While the state tried to argue that they were entitled to an extension in the time allotted, the court hearing this aspect of the case gave an order favourable to Ms Leona. The process is on to release her.

The arrest of Ms Leona during a rally against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act or CAA in Bengaluru had led to a debate on the use of sedition charges.

The woman on a Facebook post had also said "zindabad" to many countries including India and Pakistan. She did also try to chant "Hindustan zindabad", but was soon silenced and whisked away. She was accused of sedition, causing enmity between communities and causing deliberate mischief.
