Bengaluru, May 31: Tejasvi Surya, the youngest parliamentarian of BJP was congratulated by the country's top scientist Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, popularly known as CNR Rao, for winning the general election from Bengaluru South by a huge margin. Rao is also a resident of Bengaluru.

"Just got off call with Bharat Ratna Prof. CNR Rao! 'I am resident of Bengaluru South & delighted to get young representative like you. I was going to Basaveshwar Shaka of RSS in Basavanagudi in my younger days. Come to IISc & meet me' he said. Humility is hallmark of great men!" Tejasvi Surya, 28, tweeted this morning.

Mr Rao was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 2014 for his work in materials research. He is the third scientist after CV Raman and APJ Abdul Kalam to receive the country's highest civilian honour.

The newly minted BJP parliamentarian is an advocate who practises at the Karnataka High Court. When the BJP in March announced it had selected him as its South Bangalore candidate, Mr Surya had tweeted, "OMG OMG! I can't believe this. PM of world's largest democracy and President of largest political party have reposed faith in a 28-year-old guy to represent them in a constituency as prestigious a Bangalore South. ...This can happen only in my BJP. Only in New India of Narendra Modi."

Bengaluru South was previously held by Union Minister Ananth Kumar, who died last year. Ananth Kumar had retained the seat ever since he defeated Congress's BK Hariprasad in 1999.

Mr Surya comes from a family of BJP leaders and is believed to have an association with the party's ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh. The poll debutant has gained a reputation as a fiery orator. Critics have accused him of delivering polarising speeches.

Before being elected as MP, Mr Surya had hit the headlines multiple times for wrong reasons. He had triggered controversies through misogynistic tweets and calling those who oppose PM Modi as anti-nationals.

Udupi, June 30: A girl who appeared for SSLC exams in three subjects tested positive for COVID-19 in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district today.

Sheshashayana Karinja, Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) said that the 15-year-old girl had a headache and her parents took her for testing and she had tested positive for COVID-19.

She will appear for the remaining three subjects during the supplementary exams in August.

The room where the girl appeared for the exam had been sanitised. But exams would not be held in that room. All precautions have been taken in that exam centre in Kundapur taluk, Mr. Karinja said.

The other 19 students will be allowed to write their exams as there was a distance of one metre between them and there was no contact between the students during the exams, Mr. Karinja added.

It is learned that a couple of months ago, a Mumbai returnee who recovered from COVID-19 had visited the girl’s house. However, it is not clear that she got an infection from the Mumbai returnee.

It could be recalled here that a student from Hejamadi in Udupi district who was preparing for the Science exam had tested positive two days back and she is currently being treated at a hospital.
