IAS officer slams saffron outfits on Facebook for inciting violence, faces Yogi govt’s wrath

Lucknow, Jan 30: The Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh BJP government has warned to take action against a senior IAS officer, who in a Facebook post, criticised saffron outfits for inciting communal tension in the state by treating Muslims like Pakistanis and making baseless allegations against them.

Raghavendra Vikram Singh, the district magistrate of Bareilly - about 250km from here - had slammed attempts, apparently by saffron outfits, to take out processions without permission in Muslim-dominated areas and shout meaningless slogans.

"It has become a fashion... take out forced processions in Muslim-dominated areas... shout anti-Pakistan slogans... are they (Muslims) Pakistanis?... the same thing had happened in Bareilly... there was stone-pelting and FIRs were lodged," Singh had said in his post.

After criticism by BJP leaders, Singh deleted the post and tendered an apology. He said that his post pertained to the law and order problem in Bareilly.

"Muslims are our brothers... we have not been able to take them along... it is our responsibility to maintain communal amity," Singh said.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya on Tuesday said the state government had taken note of the post and would take appropriate action. "This is like a statement by a political party spokesperson and cannot be tolerated," Maurya said.

 Bengaluru, Jan 12: Two pilgrims from Bengaluru, who were siblings, drowned in sea off Auro Beach in Puducherry today.

The deceased have been identified as V Gauthman, 22, and his brother Vivek, 20.

Gauthman and Vivek were among a group of around 150 devotees from Bengaluru to the Adhiparasakhi temple at Melmaruvathur in Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu. They started their journey from Bengaluru in three buses on Friday.

After offering special puja at Adhiparasakthi temple and worshipping at a few other temples, they reached Auro Beach on Sunday afternoon. 

While they were having lunch on the beach, Gauthman entered the sea. He was caught in a huge wave.

Vivek, who tried to rescue his brother, too was caught in the wave.

Other pilgrims and fishermen began to search for them in fishing boats.

After an hour, their bodies were washed ashore, around two km from the spot.

The Auroville police retrieved the bodies and sent them for postmortem.

Udupi, June 21: A graduation student, who had attempted suicide two weeks ago under depression following the postponement of examinations due to covid-19, breathed his last at a private hospital yesterday. 

The deceased has been identified as Shakuntala, a final year degree student of First Grade College, Muniyal. She was a resident of Mathibettu near Vagranga in Hebri taluk. 

According to sources, she had studied hard to clear the examinations. The postponement of examinations led her to depression.  

She consumed poison at her house on June 8. She was immediately rushed to Manipal hospital where she breathed her last on June 20. A case has been registered in Hebri Police Station.

Bengaluru, Mar 24: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa, who had earlier announced that Indira canteen will supply free meals to the poor and BPL card holders, on Tuesday announced that Indira Canteens will be remain closed as there is fear of spread of the coronavirus as people assemble in large number.

On Monday, he had announced that Indira Canteens would provide food free of cost for the benefit of daily wage workers and poor people in the wake of a complete lockdown.

Asked about the alternative the government would provide, he said, "Closure of canteens is needed to avoid the rush near the canteen as it may lead to problems.
