II PU paper leak: CID hunts for key suspect; results likely to be delayed

Bengaluru, Apr 4: After identifying a few people, including a couple of teachers, as suspects in the II PU Chemistry question paper leak, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has set out on a massive manhunt for the prime suspect.

PUThe CID sleuths have also narrowed down on a few government school teachers, engineers of Public Works Department and officials from DPUE who could be part of the racket.

However, their links could be established only after the arrest of the suspected kingpin — identified as Kiran, an LIC agent from Tumakuru, said a senior police officer. The prime suspect was identified after the CID sleuths questioned the students who received the leaked paper on WhatsApp.

The suspect is on the run and has even switched off his mobile phone, but a team is constantly monitoring his movements and will nab him soon, a CID officer said. He, however, refused to divulge more details about the suspect.

The probe so far has revealed that several lakhs rupees had exchanged hands, the officer said. CID officials have questioned over 100 suspects with alleged links to the re-exam paper leak. The police have also questioned the 40 DPUE officials who were suspended after the March 31 incident.

Results may be delayed

Meanwhile, a possible delay in the announcement of results of II PUC is expected as the Department of Pre-University Education is bogged down with worries of lecturers boycott of evaluation. Further, the evaluators have to be relieved midway through the evaluation work to allow them to join their examination centres to conduct the chemistry paper re-examination on April 12.

The evaluation of SSLC examination answer scripts is also likely to be hit as the Karnataka State High School Assistant Masters' Association after a meeting on Sunday decided to boycott evaluation

Meanwhile, Pre-University students who on Sunday wrote the offline Joint Entrance Examination (main) for entrance in undergraduate engineering programs at NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutions found the examination moderately tough.

Kasaragod, April 9: After Supreme Court intervened and settled the Border issue with Karnataka authorities who had consented to allow the critically-ill patients from in and around Kasaragod and nearby areas to cross over to nearby Mangalore for getting urgent and critical care treatment, the Karnataka authorities is alleged to continue to be hostile either by blocking way ahead or turning a deaf ear to the patients reaching there.

It was on Wednesday onwards that the check post at Thalapadi near here on the Kozhikode-Mangalore National Highway was opened for the critically-ill patients to cross over to Mangalore hospitals for medical treatment.

However, reports reaching here said two out of the three critically-ill patients, who made it to Mangalore were allegedly ill-treated or given no treatment forcing them to return back to Kerala.

Bengaluru, Apr 4: Sixteen coronavirus cases have

been confirmed in Karnataka, taking the total number of the affected in the state to 144, the Health department said here on Saturday.

A 75-year old man, who is a resident of Bagalkote, who was confirmed positive on Friday and was being treated at a designated hospital in the district, expired last night.

"Till this evening, 144 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed in the state, which includes four deaths and 11 discharges," the health department said in a bulletin.

Out of the 129 active cases, 126 patients (including 1 pregnant woman) are in isolation at designated hospitals and are stable and three in Intensive Care Units (one on oxygen and two on Ventilators), it said.

Among the total of 144 cases detected and confirmed so far, eight are transit passengers of Kerala who landed in airports in Karnataka and are being treated in the state, it said.

Bengaluru, Jun 7: An eminent scientist on Sunday suggested a shift system in schools to prevent spread of the coronavirus and continuing with online classes with focus on project-based learning in a big way to promote creativity.

Former Director General of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) V K Saraswat supported the idea of online teaching in the absence of regular classes in view of closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

But, he said it should be organised in far better and more interactive ways so that delivery of knowledge can be better. The NITI Aayog member stressed the need for schools to have a strategy when they reopen keeping in mind the safety of students.

May be they will have to organise shifts so that within the same space they can handle the students; May be they will have to employ more teachers, and they can run two shifts. "May be half the strength in a class can come in the morning and others in the afternoon.

Or students of first to sixth standard can come in the morning and seventh to tenth can come in the afternoon, Saraswat told PTI. Reopening strategy will have to be worked out by the education department, added the former Chief Scientific Advisor to the Defence Minister.

Along with normal classes, online education should be continued as a regular system in future, and promoted in a big way because that is the way technology is going to help delivery of knowledge, he added. Saraswat also raised the pitch for reforms in the education sector, saying India is facing the problem of rote learning.

Rote learning has to give way for more project-based teaching, he underlined. Children should be made to work on projects at home and that can be done online. That will also support the changeover from rote learning to creative learning.

I personally believe the education delivery system -- primary, secondary and college levels -- has to be completely changed because creativity in India is less and creativity would come only if we replace rote learning with project-based learning, Saraswat said.

On some academics holding the view that the marks-based model is killing the education system in India as it does not promote creativity, he said evaluation of any outcome is important. Even when we perform in our normal way, evaluation cannot be replaced.

Otherwise, you cant find out how much you have succeeded in delivery. Certainly evaluation cannot be dispensed with. He did not agree with some experts, who favoured a single, uniform system for school education in India by dispensing with CBSE, ICSE and state boards. I am not for normalising everything in life.

I personally believe variety should be there. This concept of one kind of a system is okay for a Communist society, society which was trying to drive everybody like a herd, he said.

Creativity comes with variety, and there is nothing wrong in having different kinds of education system, but one thing which is important is we have to integrate vocational training as part of the education curriculum," Saraswat said. Vocational part cannot be kept away from the education system, he added.
