II PU results: Commerce toppers in Dakshina Kannada want to become CAs

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Olvita Ancilla D’Souza from Alva’s Pre University College, Moodbidri, Srikrishna Sharma K. from Sathyasai Loka Seva Pre University College, Alike, Bantwal, Shreeya Shenoy from Canara Pre-University College, Mangaluru, and Swasthik P. from St. Philomena’s PU College, Darbe, Puttur, the top four scorers in the Commerce stream in the II Pre University examinations, want to become Chartered Accountants (CAs).

Of them, both Olvita D’Souza and Srikrishna Sharma have scored 596 marks. While Shreeya Shenoy has secured 595 marks, Swasthik has scored 594 marks.

An excited D’Souza, who hails from Kinnigoli, attributed her success in the examination to the conducive atmosphere in the college. D’Souza said that she will become a Chartered Accountant.

She has scored a 100 marks each in Business Studies, Accountancy, Basic Mathematics and Statistics papers and 98 each in English and Hindi papers.

D’Souza, daughter of Oliver D’Souza, a businessman from Kinnigoli, was among the students of Alva’s College who pursued the course under the “free adoption scheme” of the college given to meritorious students. D’Souza had scored 98.5 % marks in Class 10.

Alva’s College offers free education to meritorious students and those who are talented in sports.

If a student who has scored 94 % marks and above in Class 10, he will be given free education in Commerce in the Pre-University level. In the case of 95 % marks and above, the student will be given free education in the Science stream and if it is 93 % marks and above such a student will be admitted to the Arts stream for free education.

The free education covers food, accommodation and all fees.

D’Souza thanked M. Mohan Alva, chairman of Alva’s Education Foundation, Moodbidri, her teachers, the college staff and her parents for the success in the examination. D’Souza’s mother Anitha D’Souza is a home-maker, while her brother Orlin D’Souza is studying engineering in Nitte Engineering College.

Sharma, a native of Badiyadka in Kasaragod district of Kerala, said that since his school days he has dreamt of becoming a Chartered Accountant. Son of Subrahmanya Bhat, a farmer, Sharma said that he regularly travelled for an hour in the bus from his house to the college. For the last few weeks before the examination, he stayed in the college’s hostel for examination preparation.

Sharma has secured 100 marks each in Business Studies, Accountancy, Basic Mathematics, Statistics and Sanskrit and 96 in English. Sharma has planned to study the B.Com Integrated course.

Shenoy, daughter of hardware dealer Ganesh Shenoy, said that she too was fascinated towards Chartered Accountant profession since her childhood.

Eldest of the two children of Ganesh Shenoy and home-maker Gayathri Shenoy, Shenoy said that listening to lectures attentively helped her do well in the examination.

Shenoy has secured 100 marks each in Basic Mathematics, Statistics, Business Studies, Accountancy and Sanskrit while obtaining 95 marks in English. Shenoy will write the CA Foundation Examination in Novem-ber. Swasthik, a resident of Madavu, has secured 100 marks each in Economics, Accountancy, Statistics and Sanskrit.

He has scored 99 marks in Business Studies and 95 marks in English. Swasthik is the son of Krishnamoorthy and Vidya. Swasthik has credited his success to the support of his family members and college lecturers.

Bengaluru, Apr 15: Kruti Muttagi, a student of VVS Sardarpatel PU College at Basaveshwaranagar in the city, has secured first rank in the science stream as the Karnataka PUC results were announced on Monday. 

She secured 597 marks out of 600, while scoring full marks in four out of six papers – mathematics, physics, chemistry and second language (Sanskrit). 

Kruti, who wants to be a doctor, said is expecting a medical seat at the Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute in the city. 

“I would love to continue my education in Bengaluru and I hope that I score good marks in NEET,” she said. Revealing her success mantra, Kruti said that she followed a timetable at home for the last three months and tried to clear tough topics first, trying to avoid any last-minute preparations.

“The atmosphere at home is completely festive as wishes keep pouring in from everyone,” said Kruti’s mother Arati Muttagi, a homemaker.

Interestingly, all three toppers from the commerce stream are also girls and are from PU colleges in the city. Varshini M. Bhat from Vidyamandir Independent PU College, Malleswaram scored 595 to secure the first rank.

Securing 100% marks in all the five subjects except English, Amrutha S.R. from ASC PU College, Rajajinagar came second. She is planning to join Chartered Accountancy (CA) along with a full-time degree course and has been preparing for entrance exams. 

Also a trained Carnatic singer, she has been practicing too with her studies. She had secured 97.92% marks in SSLC. “Amrutha has been attending college regularly and has been revising day-to-day portions well before wrapping up her day. Her interest to understand concepts clearly has helped her master the course, helping her score well,” said Ramesh S., a high school teacher at an aided school in Benson Town.

Bengaluru, Jan 28: Brace for hefty traffic penalties as the state government is all set to reverse a notification on revised fines which came into effect last September following pushback from road users and opposition parties.

The Karnataka government will implement traffic penalties as stipulated in the amended Motor Vehicles Act, 2019, in a phased manner following a diktat from the Centre. The government did not specify the timeline for it.

“At a recent meeting of transport ministers from various states, the Union government explained why it wanted to implement these huge fines. We found it convincing and will implement it in its original form,” said transport minister Laxman Savadi on Monday.

Savadi said India’s image globally has taken a beating due to the high number of road deaths and the Centre wants to change it at any cost. However, he said the entire set of hefty fines would not be reintroduced all at once.

BJP govt revised rates in Sept

The BJP government last September had revised fines on compoundable offences and those which are fined on the spot by traffic cops by 50%- 80%, barring drunken driving and racing.

As per the revised rates, helmetless riding attracted a penalty of Rs 500 against Rs 1,000 notified by the Centre. Driving without a licence attracted a fine of Rs 1,000 for

two- and three-wheelers and Rs 2,000 for light motor vehicles as against the earlier Rs 5,000 for all types of vehicles.

The central government recently told states and Union Territories they should enforce fines as per the amended Act and they cannot be rolled back. The road transport and highways ministry said fines cannot be reduced below the minimum amount fixed by law, unless the President gives his assent.

Mumbai, June 9: A 45-year-old doctor posted in the 108 ambulance service at Malad railway station in Mumbai died of COVID-19 after two hospitals refused admission, in spite of the fact that he was a frontline warrior against coronavirus.

The victim is Dr Shaukat Ali, who was working with the 108 ambulance service for the last four years. A few days ago, he got his blood tests done after his health deteriorated. The result stated typhoid fever following which he started getting treatment at home in Malwani.

Ali's family ran from pillar to post to get him hospitalised in either a private or government hospital, to no avail.

"On Friday, his condition worsened and he started feeling breathless. Despite us calling the 108 ambulance service, no one picked up the call. So after waiting for a while, I and uncle's colleague, Dr Nigam, rushed him to SK Patil hospital in Malad East in an auto. But they refused us stating they were admitting only COVID-19 patients.”

“Then we took him to Desai Hospital, where doctors were initially ready to admit him but later refused stating lack of beds. They said we could take him home as his condition was fine," Zubair Shaikh, Ali's nephew said.

"But his condition worsened. So, I called Dr Nigam and we managed to admit him in Shatabdi hospital. On Sunday, when his results came out stating that he had COVID-19, doctors had already put him on a ventilator, where he passed away in the evening," he added.

Zubair further said, "Had the doctors at Desai Memorial Hospital admitted him, my uncle would have been alive today. It is a matter of great regret that a doctor, who was risking his life during this pandemic, could not get help from his own government hospitals."

Ali's wife and his two children's are in UP, while he was staying with his elder daughter who had recently appeared for HSC exams and preparing for NEET.

My condolence to him and his family. Please don't divide Hindu and Muslims in such way, not only Muslims but Hindu also died due to such reasons and one more thing here in Maharashtra, BJP is not ruling party. Thanks..

this is indian not italy and now current ruling government is very very bad...they want indian to be slave.
also today you help your hindu brother but tommorow they will vote for same people BJP who is giving touble to muslim..GOD given chance to develop muslim community not our enemy,
india is divided alreday, my 20 year old hindu friend become my enemy now after NRC and CAA..

Mangaluru, Feb 1: “1) Take necessary precautionary measures. 2) Don’t blindly believe in social media rumours.” These are the two important advisories issued by the authorities in Dakshina Kannada district in the wake of coronavirus scare.

According to DHO Dr Ramakrishna there is no specific antiviral treatment recommended for coronavirus infection. Supportive care for infected people can be highly effective, but, there is no vaccine available for coronavirus.

In a health meeting, he advised people to take precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Following are some of the precautionary measures.

1) Wash your hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based sanitiser.

2) Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

3) Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

4) Stay home when you are sick, and cover your mouth when you cough or use a tissue while sneezing.

5) Throw the used tissue in the dustbin. Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently.

Deputy commissioner Sindhu B Rupesh said there is no need for people to panic about coronavirus.

Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat CEO R Selvamani said IEC programmes will be held to create awareness on possibilities of spread of diseases.

He also advised people not to follow blindly the advisories being shared on social media, especially WhatsApp without proper verification.

“Posts on cures for coronavirus which are not scientifically proven are being shared on social media. Do not follow such advisories without verifying facts,” he said.
