IIM Calcutta may open campuses in Dubai and Malaysia

Kolkata, Apr 8: The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta (IIM-C) may explore the possibility of opening campuses on foreign shores soon. And the destinations could be Dubai and Malaysia.

IIM_CalcuttaThe proposal, which was discussed with several of the Board of Governors (BoG) members, is waiting for nod from the highest decision-making body of the institute. If a go-ahead is given, IIM-C will join the league of IIM-Indore, IMT-Ghaziabad and SP Jain Institute of Management Research that already run campuses in Dubai. IIM-Indore has recently decided to shift from Ras Al Khaimah to the commercial hub of Middle East.

"The plan is at a very nascent state. Nothing has been decided yet. But we are looking at the prospects to make our presence felt in the Middle East and also Malaysia. The major draw will be to run the executive programmes," said a senior faculty member. He added: "The presence of IIM-C in Dubai will access the Middle East market where a great number of expats live. Many European schools have already opened shops in Dubai. Even private B-schools and universities like SP Jain Institute of Management Research and IMT Ghaziabad also have centres in Dubai. XLRI, too, operates a centre from the same city. IIM-Indore has opened a study centre. There is a big executive education market and since the distance and connectivity between Europe or the USA with India is far, Middle East is a better option."

Some of the IIM-C BOG members also feel that Indian brands have good recognition in the Dubai market. "If the project materializes, we will take baby steps in internationalizing the B-school, which is already a famous brand in India. We have a certain degree of excellence. Opening campuses on foreign shores will be a stepping stone to try and tap a larger market. The north African markets, too, are accessible in that way. The cost of education from Indian schools is competitively better than European or US B-schools too," another source pointed out.

Additional revenue generation is a motive for such move if the decision comes through. "Corporates have a huge presence in the Middle East and that will work for placements. Part of the expansion policy of the institute may include a plan to open foreign study centres," said the source.

MHRD will not have to spend money for the purpose, but only give a go-ahead. "IIM-Bangalore was previously asked by the ministry to shut shop in Singapore because of non-clarity in policy. We will be much transparent before starting on the venture," said a BOG member.

The institute already runs an online executive programme in business management which is an international course. "These students sometimes come to the campus for a week or more. And sometimes even our faculty visits the country and teaches them in Dubai or Sharjah. Some students are also from Oman. It's a certificate programme and not a diploma course," informed a source.

IIM-C is not eyeing Singapore because it is already packed with global B-schools. "Earlier, representatives from the Malaysian government had come to us and invited IIM-C to open a campus at the knowledge village which they were planning to set up. We had then turned down the proposal due to lack of faculty members. Now we have more teachers and hence are ready to expand our presence globally," added the source.

Mangaluru, Jan 2: Shwetha Rasquinha, Assistant Professor and Head of the Department of Social Work, St Aloysius College, Mangaluru, has been awarded Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree by the Mangalore University for her thesis titled “Effectiveness of Social work intervention on caretakers of cancer patients- A social work study in Mangalore”.

She did her studies under the guidance of Dr Rameela Shekhar, Professor (Rtd), School of Social work, Roshni Nilaya, Mangaluru.

Ms Shwetha Rasquinha hails from Vittal, D/o Vincent Rasquinha and Late Regina Rasquinha, and is the second person to complete doctoral studies from the Vittal Parish.

Her colleagues and well-wishers have congratulated her for her highest achievement in academics and successful completion of quality research.

Mangaluru, Jan 3: Vishruth Bhat, a Class VI student from CFAL is the topper in Dakshina Kannada District in the first round of the VVM examination (VI Standard category) and now advances to the ‘State Level Camp’.  Proving their mettle, 12 students from CFAL have qualified for the “State Level Camp” of Vidyarthi Vigyan Manthan (VVM) - a national programme to educate and popularise science for classes VI – XI. A total of 129 students are selected from Karnataka to participate in the State Level Camp, out of which around 9.30% students are from CFAL. These students were selected on the basis of their performances in the first stage, an online exam. The State level camp shall include written test, observational analysis of video clips, situation problem solving and hands on activities.

The selected students are:  B Vishruth Bhat, Pratham D, Chinmayee Adiga, Chirag J Sunil, Nidhi Noronha, K Sai Prathiksha, Aryan Atul Surana, Rakshith K R, Anupama Kamath, Krithi, Mavith Saldanha and Vignaraj. Among the selected students Kirti, Mavith and Vihnaraj are TLC PU College students.

About VVM:

VVM is a national program jointly organized by Vijnana Bharati, NCERT and Vigyan Prasar for educating and popularizing science among the school students of Classes VI to XI. The main objective of the program is to identify keen knowledge seekers in Science and then nurture them for higher level of science education. Students participating in VVM undergo the following multi-level testing procedures:

•        Objective type question answering

•        Comprehensive writing

•        Presentation and Group discussion

•        Role play

•        Practical examination

•        Methods of Science

The program also includes organising visits to reputed National Science Laboratories and Centres. To enable deserving students to have interaction with renowned scientists of the Nation. The VVM will identify Vigyan Jigyasu (Keen Knowledge Seeker of Science) at National level.  

This exam is conducted in three phases.  The first phase is an online exam conducted in the school itself.  In the second phase (State level camp) top 20 rankers per class, per state will be identified to participate in two days State Level Camp. Eminent scholars and scientists from different fields will guide the students. Practical examination will be conducted to select top 2 students from each class to participate in the national camp. Toppers will get certificates and cash awards.

In the third phase (National camp) which is a 2-day camp, comprise presentations, scientific understanding, innovation, and creativity, out of box activities and assessment of leadership qualities. Toppers are awarded with certificates and cash awards.

New Delhi, Aug 9: With the National Education Policy 2020 recognising the need for flexibility in choosing the subjects that a student wants to study, implementation of this policy will boost science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education in India, edtech startup SP Robotic Works has said.

The new education policy also recognised that skills like coding and scientific temper and evidence-based thinking should be learned by all students to become good, successful, innovative, adaptable and productive human beings in today's rapidly changing world.

With the semester-based pattern, there is a lot of relaxation with respect to a child's choice to select their interest in subjects, according to Sneha Priya, CEO and co-founder, SP Robotic Works.

"This will promote the kids to explore various segments which otherwise I believe was restricted to an extent," Priya told IANS in an interview.

On July 29, the Union Cabinet gave its approval to a new National Education Policy (NEP) which aims at bringing about several changes in the education system from the school to college level.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said that the NEP is the foundation of a "new India" and that it will help close the gap between education and research.

It is now well recognised that in opening the door to myriad opportunities offered by STEM education, online platforms have played a pivotal role.

Coding-related courses have picked up well and the online platforms have seen a lot of kids enrol in block programming, artificial intelligence (AI) and android app development.

"As the field of STEM education gained immense popularity in India, this online learning platform has seen 80 per cent increase in the number of renewal of programmes, which implies the increase in interest and is a positive sign for the future of STEM education," she said.
The proposal to introduce coding from Class 6 and onwards is one of the best decisions of the policy, Priya added.

"With importance being given to coding in the NEP, the schools will be more open to adopting new ways to ensure their children master in what they are learning which will automatically result in better outcomes," she opined.

"Focus on these skills is crucial during the formative years for the development of the children. Hence, this new policy will prove beneficial for growing kids to gather their interest in coding at an early stage," she said.

According to Priya, it is important to deliver the coding concepts in the right manner to captivate and encourage the child to engross his/her attention towards the subject.

She also stressed that both robotics and coding courses have seen a huge upsurge this year.
In addition to what is being taught at school, the online learning platform has seen an increased number of queries from parents with regards to shaping up their child's coding skills.

"Especially with the current situation, the Covid-i9 lockdown has given more time to students to explore their interest in this field and we have seen double the demand in participation just in the previous few months from children," Priya quipped.

Even during the lockdown, SP Robotic Works said they have seen an increase of 55 per cent in the revenues.

"Additionally, we have seen around 1 lakh new enrolments during the last four months which demonstrates that Indian children are exploring their interests across segments," the CEO said.
"For the next six months, our focus is going to continue educating and engaging more students in experiential learning as we work towards building a nation that's truly 'Aatmanirbhar'," Priya noted.
