Illegal export from Mangaluru, Karwar ports: Govt may attach assets of 77 firms

The Karnataka government is considering to attach properties of 77 companies that have illegally exported iron ore from the New Mangaluru and Karwar ports without permits.

The Cabinet sub-committee set up to oversee implementation of the Lokayukta report on illegal mining on Saturday decided to recommend to the Cabinet to attach properties of these firms under section 25 of the Mines and Minerals (Regulation and Development) Act, 1957. The value of the properties to be attached is estimated at Rs 12,000 crore, official sources in the government said.

The sub-committee, headed by Rural Development and Panchayat Raj (RDPR) Minister H K Patil, has already decided to recommend an SIT probe into the illegal export of iron ore from the two ports. The move has come in the wake of the CBI recently informing the state government that it will not be able to conduct further investigation into the issue.

Official sources said a total of 77,80,119 tonnes of iron ore was illegally exported by these companies. Though the CBI has investigated these cases, it has failed to arrive at a conclusion and take further action, the sources added.

The sub-committee will recommend to the Cabinet to issue an executive order for attaching the properties, spread across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. If the Cabinet gives its nod, a notification will be issued listing out names of all the accused, about 800 of them, and the properties will be attached, the sources pointed out.

Officials of the departments concerned, including Home, Mines and Geology, DPAR and Forest will be asked to file applications before the jurisdictional sessions magistrate courts to seize the properties. The seizures can happen only after obtaining the court permission

Bengaluru, Mar 28: Karnataka Director General of Police Praveen Sood on Saturday asked philanthropists who want to support the poor during the lockdown to leave food at the nearby police station, who will ensure that it reaches the needy.

The DGP has asked the Bengaluru City police Commissioner to take steps in this regard and ensure fair distribution.

"All philanthropists, in case you want to support poor. Leave cooked, packed, simple food at the police station and it will reach poor. @CPBlr pl announce a nodal officer for deciding the police station for fair distribution," Sood wrote on his official twitter handle.

Responding to the DGP's tweet, city police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao appointed Joint Commissioner (Crime) as a nodal officer.

"Sandeep Patil, IPS, Joint Commissioner, CRIME at 9480801011 is the officer nominated from Bangalore City Police to receive and acknowledge donation of food and consumables for distribution to police and those in need," Rao tweeted.

Meanwhile, the city police has also initiated measures to take those in critical medical emergency to the nearest medical facility.

Bengaluru police's initiative of distributing food, snacks, water and certain essential requirements to those in need has received wide appreciation.

While some police stations are already providing food to poor and those in need by collecting it from sponsors, couple of them have even hired a cook for the needy.

The lockdown has affected the poor who depend on their daily wages for livelihood.

Koppal, Aug 3: The activists of Popular Front of India (PFI) have won the heart of the people by performing the last rites of a local leader of Bharatiya Janata Party in Koppla district of Karnataka. 

Somashekhara Gowda, a senior BJP leader in Koppal’s Gangavathi died of covid-19. His family members were reportedly quarantined. His own party activists also were not ready to participate in the last rite due to the fear of coronavirus infection.

Following requests, a team of PFI comprised of district secretary Fayaz, and members Yaseen, Abdul Aalam, Shamid Razi and Husain Azarauddin performed the last rites as per Veerashaiva Lingayat traditions. 

Speaking to media persons PFI district president Zaheer Abbas lamented that people still have plenty of misconceptions about covid-19. “Due to the misconceptions, performing the last rites of those who die of covid-19 has become a challenge,” he said.

He said that PFI activists followed all the health guidelines and took necessary precautions while performing the last rites. “Under the guidance of district health officials and with the consent of the family members of the deceased, the last rites were performed as per Veerashaiva Lingayat traditions,” he said.

Hubli, Feb 24: Pro-Pakistan slogans were found written on the walls and doors of Higher Primary School in Budarsingi village here on Monday, said Raman Gouda Hatti, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), DCRB, Dharwad.

"The headmaster of the school noticed the slogans written on the walls and doors by chalk and he informed us. We will investigate the matter based on the complaint," said DSP Hatti.

The slogans were written in the Kannada language. Those behind the incident have not been identified so far.

The villagers staged a protest demanding action against those behind the act.

Congress leader HK Patil condemned the incident and asked for culprits to be identified and punished soon.

"Anti-social elements are involved in these acts. The government has failed to identify these people and punish them. The culprits behind this act need to be identified and punished. This incident is unfortunate and the intelligence department should work to stop these kinds of incidents," said Patil.
