Illegal mining: Rs 40.69 lakh fine slapped on Mandya JD(S) MP

Mandya, Jun 29: Lok Sabha member C S Puttaraju has been slapped a fine of Rs 40.69 lakh by the department of mines and geology as the charges of illegal mining activities at Bebi Betta forest range near Pandavapura stand proven.puttaraju

Right to Information (RTI) activist K R Raveendra had recently lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta in Bengaluru, against STG Mining Company and other firms for illegal quarrying activities at Bebi Betta.

The STG company, in which MP Puttaraju is a shareholder, is owned by his nephew and zilla panchayat member C Ashok. The Lokayukta had directed the department of mines and geology to conduct a probe. After investigation, the department found the allegations of illegal quarrying to be true and senior scientist Nagabhushan levied a penalty of Rs 90.81 lakh on 18 people involved in illegal mining.

According to reports, STG company has been involved in illegal mining since May 6, 2013, and is found to have transported around 3,900 tonnes of stone. This is a clear violation as per the Karnataka Minor Mineral Concession Rules, 1994.

Raveendra said the officials had shirked from their responsibility by just levying fine on the companies. The whole district administration and Puttaraju have been involved in illegal activities. As this is a serious crime, it must be handed over to CBI for a probe, he said. Puttaraju should resign as MP and face investigation, he demanded. Puttaraju was not available for comments.

Udupi, Jan 11: A case has been registered against Pune Billava president on the charges of issuing life threats to former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake and Dinesh Amin Mattu at the Udupi Town Police station, police sources said on Saturday.

Former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake along with like-minded Billawa organisations and the Udupi Muslim Federation jointly scheduled an inter-religious Billawa – Muslims Harmony meet on January 11, at the Town Hall.

Journalist Dinesh Amin Mattu was the speaker and Vinay Kumar Sorake was to preside over the programme.

Bengaluru, May 27: Amid uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has disrupted school education in Karnataka, the state government is seeking the help of the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to televise classes, a state minister said on Tuesday.

"We request you to provide minimum three channels on the Doordarshan network exclusively for the Department of Public Instruction, Government of Karnataka," Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar said in a letter to Union I&B Minister Prakash Javadekar.

Suggesting co-branding the channels under DD and the state education department, he asked for the channels to be mandatorily transmitted by the cable and DTH operators under the Cable Act.

The state education department has already discussed with Prasar Bharti officials, who, according Kumar, have assured 3+3 hours of timeslots on the education channel Chandana on cost basis.

"We have also made all the necessary arrangements for content creation by the teachers," he said.

Meanwhile, the minister has revealed that television is the best medium for the students as a home learning mode in these challenging times.

"The department of public instruction reviewed various technological options and considered TV as one of the best means for home learning," Kumar said.

In a survey conducted by the education department, it was found out that 95 per cent households had television sets.

Kumar said the state operates government schools in nine languages, including Kannada, English and Urdu.

"To cater to all the students, and considering a long-term strategy to run schools by maintaining social distancing, we are in immediate need of minimum three exclusive channels to teach through TV," he said.

According to Kumar, the Karnataka government is facing hardships to meet the capital expenditure requirements, hence, it is seeking help from the I&B Ministry.

Bengaluru, Aug 7: Action will be taken against private hospitals that were violating government norms and charging exorbitant fees charges for the treatment of Covid-19 patients and suspects, said Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi.

The government has taken action against private hospitals in Bengaluru and the same parameters would be adopted other cities, he said speaking to media persons in Belagavi on Friday.

Jarkiholi said that the government had noticed that patients were levied exorbitant charges for Covid-19 treatment. People too have complaints regarding the huge bills by these private hospitals and have demanded action.

“We are not under the obligation of any private hospital and stringent action will be taken against all erring and violating government tariffs. They will have to treat patients and follow the tariffs fixed,” he stated.

Belagavi Institute of Medical Sciences District Hospital had been directed to install CCTV cameras in Covid-19 wards and install monitors at reception to facilitate monitoring of treatment and condition of the wards. BIMS management was taken to task for not following the directive and have been given a deadline to install CCTV cameras, Jarkiholi informed.
