Mangaluru, Mar 17: Even as two national parties – Bharatiya Janata Party and Indian National Congress – have been struggling to finalise their candidates for Dakshina Kannada Lok Sabha constituency in 2019 general elections, Social Democratic Party of India has formally announced it candidate.

Ilyas Mohammad Thumbay, the Karnataka state unit president of SDPI, will contest from Dakshina Kannada. The announcement was made at the SDPI district conference held today at the Nehru Maidan in the city. It could be recalled here that SDPI candidate (Haneef Khan Kodaje) had finished third in Dakshina Kannada in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Speaking on the occasion, SDPI national general secretary Abdul Majeed Kodlipete said that apart from Dakshina Kannada his party will be fielding candidates in Bengaluru, Mysuru-Kodagu and Bidar Lok Sabha constituencies in Karnataka.

SDPI district president Ataullah Jokatte presided over the meet. SDPI national secretary Alfonso Franco, PFI Karnataka state president Muhammad Saqib and Dalit leader Bhaskar Prasad were present among others.

Let Congress – if it is really a secular party – decide not to field candidate from Dakshina Kannada and officially support SDPI as the latter had done in many seats in last Assembly polls. All the shortlisted Cong ticket aspirants are useless, shameless and corrupt people. Let all the peace lovers back SDPI this time.

Bengaluru, May 22: Karnataka Congress delegation met Chief Election Commissioner, Dr B Basavaraju in Bengaluru, urging him to guide Karnataka Government to conduct local body elections and not to allow State government to nominate their party men to the local bodies.

The delegation was led by Congress leader Siddaramaiah and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president D K Shivakumar.

"They (State government) wants to postpone the election, they have a lot of other provisions. We are demanding to protect the law, the government doesn't have the power to interfere in the system. We will not allow the state government to nominate their party men.

The CM and his entire team is responsible for this, they are killing the democracy and Panchayati Raj system of the State," said Shivakumar while speaking to the reporters.

The local body elections were scheduled to take place in the month of March or April, which were postponed in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

However, the date for conducting the local body elections has not been decided yet.

Mangaluru, Mar 25: In the wake of coronavirus outbreak, Nalin Kumar Kateel, Member of Parliament today declared that the coastal city of Mangaluru will remain completely shut tomorrow, (March 26) onwards.

"Today the people were given time to go out of their houses to buy essentials today. But from tomorrow, this will not be allowed," the MP said.

"We are discussing with officials of all departments about ways to manage the situation. Essential things and facilities people need, will be delivered at their doorsteps. We are sorting out how to deliver the items on behalf of the government and mode of delivery of items to apartment complexes," he said.

He said that a large number of patients from Kasaragod had come into the city yesterday. Hence, the district administration has taken a decision, he said.

"Under the present circumstances, the hospitals in the city would not be sufficient for our purpose. So the administration will not allow any vehicles including ambulances into the city. All the ambulances would be blocked from entering Dakshina Kannada district at Talapady border and sent back," he said.
