I'm best man for FIFA, insists banned 'knight' Platini

October 29, 2015

Paris, Oct 29: European football supremo Michel Platini insisted that he remains the best man to lead scandal-hit FIFA despite currently being suspended from the sport.

PlatiniThe French legend, one of seven candidates to succeed Sepp Blatter as FIFA president, believes that his experience as a player, coach and administrator far outstrips any of his six rivals.

"In all modesty, I am the best-placed to lead world football," Platini, 60, told Swiss daily Le Matin in an interview in which he even went on to compare himself to a medieval knight. "I am the only one to have a broad vision for football."

Platini and Blatter are both suspended for 90 days while an investigation is carried out into a controversial 1.8 million euro payment made by the FIFA chief to the Frenchman in 2011.

"I have been a player, coach of the French team, a club official at Nancy, organiser of the World Cup and, today, the head of the most powerful football confederation, a mission that I have accomplished with honesty," he added.

Platini faces competition from Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein, Musa Bility, Jerome Champagne, Gianni Infantino, Sheikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa and Tokyo Sexwale for the FIFA top job.

Infantino is the general-secretary of UEFA and was a shock candidate for the February 26 vote which will decide who will succeed Blatter. Platini said that Infantino's nomination represented a "plan B" on the part of UEFA.

"I am delighted. The day that I am cleared, everything will be fine," added Platini."The executive committee, Gianni and me, we will meet to re-evaluate the situation. And we will choose the best solution for football."

The Platini camp claimed on Monday that Infantino had given an "oral" reassurance to the UEFA executive committee that he would quit the FIFA race if Platini was cleared of wrongdoing.

However, a source close to the Frenchman also added: "The truth in politics today is not the same on the day after". Platini blasted the suspension and its negative effect on his chances of putting across his case.

"It has prevented me from campaigning and fighting on equal terms," he said before waxing lyrical over his current predicament.

"I feel like I am a medieval knight facing a fortress. I am trying to storm it for football but instead all I get is boiling oil poured on my head."

Despite his weariness with the ongoing investigation, Platini is adamant that he will be cleared.

"I was always assured that the payment (from FIFA to himself) had followed the rules of internal compliance."

Platini refused to entertain thoughts that he had fallen victim to an elaborate plot engineered by Blatter to blacken his name and reputation. "I do not want to believe in a conspiracy theory," he said.

May 5: Former Pakistan speedster Shoaib Akhtar says he is interested in becoming India's bowling coach if there is an offer, asserting that he is capable of grooming "more aggressive, fast and talkative" pacers.

Akhtar expressed his willingness in an interview on social networking app 'Helo'.

Asked if he would like to be associated with the Indian bowling unit in future, he responded in the positive. India's current bowling is Bharat Arun.

"I will definitely. My job is to spread knowledge. What I have learned is knowledge and I will spread it," Akhtar said.

One of the fastest bowlers to have played the game, he added, "I will produce more aggressive, fast and more talkative bowlers than the current ones who will tell-off the batsmen in a way that you will enjoy a lot."

He said he has always wanted to share his knowledge among budding cricketers and that he is looking to produce more aggressive bowlers.

He also added that he would like to "coach" IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders, for whom he has played in the cash-rich T20 league's inaugural edition.

The former pacer also spoke about his early interactions with Indian batting great Sachin Tendulkar in the 1998 series.

"I had seen him but didn't know how big a name he was in India. In Chennai, I got to know that he was known as a god in India.

"Mind you, he is a very good friend of mine. In 1998, when I bowled as fast as I could, Indian public celebrated with me. I have a big fan following in India," Akhtar said.

Bengaluru, Aug 1: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are aiming to set up their preparatory camp for the 13th edition of the tournament from early August.

This year's IPL was slated to commence from March 29 but the tournament was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Recently, the IPL Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel had confirmed that the 13th edition of the mega event will commence on September 19 in the UAE.

As per a report in ESPNcricinfo, CSK players have been asked to report to Chennai first, following which they will leave for Dubai via a charter flight only after approval from the Indian government.

The IPL Governing Council will meet on August 2 to finalise the schedule and other key arrangements for the tournament. Also, the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) around securing eight teams for 51 days across three venues will be formally established in that meeting.

CSK, who has the oldest squad in the IPL, are looking for a month's preparation before ahead of the tournament.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, the side was the first team to start their training camp in March. Senior players like Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu had begun training their training in December 2019.

New Delhi, Apr 24: Veteran off-spinner Harbhajan Singh said he doesn't think Mahendra Singh Dhoni will play for India again, adding to the guessing game over the future of the superstar former captain.

Dhoni, 38, has not appeared for club or country since last year's 50-over World Cup and India's coronavirus lockdown could threaten his chances of getting back into the national team.

The Indian Premier League, the main platform before this year's scheduled T20 World Cup, is likely to be truncated or cancelled because of the pandemic.

Harbhajan, who plays with Dhoni at IPL side Chennai Super Kings, said international retirement was on the cards for Dhoni and that he was increasingly being asked about his teammate.

"It's up to him. You need to know whether he wants to play for India again," Harbhajan said in an online forum.

"As far as I know him, he won't want to wear India's blue jersey again. IPL he will play, but for India I think he had decided the (2019) World Cup was his last."

Dhoni, who gave up Test cricket in 2014, started training for the Super Kings in March but has not commented on his international future.

Dhoni led India to win the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in 2007. He hit a six to seal the 2011 World Cup final victory and, along with it, his status as a national hero. He has amassed 10,773 runs from 350 ODIs.
