I'm a pioneer in marketing films, not myself: SRK

December 19, 2015

New Delhi, Dec 19: He's as successful an entrepreneur as an actor. Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan considers himself a "pioneer" in innovative movie marketing that has set trends aplenty in the over Rs.12,640 crore (approximately $2 billion) Indian film industry and steered his projects to hit status. But he does not agree that marketing skills are an "intrinsic" part of an actor's life.

sharukh"As far as marketing of films is concerned, I will 100 percent claim that I started doing it in this country, especially of the level that's prevalent today. Whether it was 'Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani', 'Yes Boss', 'Ra.One' or 'Happy New Year'.

"I'm genuinely a pioneer as far as marketing films is concerned. (But) Marketing myself, no. I don't think actors need to market themselves," Shah Rukh, who has his own film production company Red Chillies Entertainment banner with his wife Gauri, told IANS in an interview here.

Citing the example of Hollywood's "Batman" star Christian Bale, he added: "I don't think it's an intrinsic part of being an actor. You take a Christian Bale...he doesn't market himself. He is Christian Bale, and he's fantastic. And as a matter of fact, he's a very reclusive person. I don't think that's a prerequisite for an actor."

But when Shah Rukh - who has an experience of over two decades in filmdom and was given an honorary doctorate by the University of Edinburgh earlier this year - talks of his hold on film marketing, he doesn't say it for nothing.

His clutter-breaking strategies have been at the core of marketing films like "My Name Is Khan" -- for which actress Kajol and he rang the opening bell of the US Nasdaq stock market; "Ra.One" -- for which the 'Badshah' had a 10-month campaign with tie-ups worth Rs.52 crore with over 30 brands; "Chennai Express" -- for which a game and a karaoke app were launched; and "Happy New Year" -- to promote which the film's cast went on 'Slam! The Tour' and performed across cities in Britain and the US.

SRK's first pitch for his film "Fan", slated to release on April 15 next year, emerged in July this year. The walls of the actor's Mumbai bungalow were painted with messages, and it was only later revealed that the graffiti was indeed a unique promotional stunt for the Maneesh Sharma directorial.

And for his just-released "Dilwale", directed by Rohit Shetty, the 50-year-old Padmi Shri awardee planned a straight 20-day campaign -- an "experiment" that he feels has turned out to be "good".

Still, the actor -- who's known for his romantic roles on screen -- doesn't take full credit for the marketing of his films.

"I don't think I'm an expert in marketing... It's unfortunate that a lot of the credit for my films comes to me. They say, 'It's a Shah Rukh Khan hit'. It's not! It's a hit of 200 people who have worked on the film. I get the benefits because I'm the poster boy.

"For years, I've sat down with some very smart and intelligent young people who come up with out-of-the-box ideas. I'm in a position -- and I'm not trying to be modest here -- to use those ideas and have the resources to build up on them. But I'm not the birth-giver to those ideas," Shah Rukh said.

One of the highest paid actors of Hindi filmdom, Shah Rukh also does not feel "complimented" when people call him a "businessman or marketing genius". "It's not a compliment to me, it's a compliment to the people I work with. And since I'm just the face of it, it's awkward for me to accept that."

Washington D.C., Jan 16: Barbara Broccoli, who has since long been the producer of the James Bond franchise, recently clarified in an interview that the 007 character won't be played by a woman in the forthcoming rendition.

Broccoli, accompanied by her half brother and fellow producer Michael G. Wilson, told Variety: "He can be of any color, but he is male."

She went on to say: "I believe we should be creating new characters for women -- strong female characters. I'm not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that."

According to Fox News, the current Bond hero, Daniel Craig, announced last November that he would cease to play the legendary character once he is done with the upcoming 'No Time To Die' movie that is scheduled for release in coming April.

Commenting on Daniel parting ways with the franchise, Broccoli said: "I'm in total denial. I've accepted what Daniel has said, but I'm still in denial. It's too traumatic for me."

Fox News reported last July that the British Actress Lashana Lynch could possibly star in the 2020 Bond flick, but such speculations were dispelled once the trailer for the movie was brought out last December.

Patna, Jul 29: BJP MLA Neeraj Kumar Singh Bablu, cousin of Sushant Singh Rajput, on Tuesday said that a huge amount of money has been transferred into the account of actress Rhea Chakraborty from the actor's account.

"An FIR has been filed against actress Rhea Chakraborty by the father of Sushant Singh as a huge amount of money has been transferred into her account and they both have joint accounts for some companies through which cheating has been done from her side," Bablu said.

"This is the issue of probe and police will go there and investigate the matter after that everything will be revealed," he added.

He also said that Karan Johar should also be called in for questioning by the Mumbai Police in connection with Sushant Singh Rajput's death case.

The statement was given in the backdrop of several top film personalities being questioned in connection with the case.

On July 28, an FIR has been registered against actor Rhea Chakraborty under various sections including abetment of suicide on the complaint of Sushant Singh Rajput's father Krishna Kishor Singh, the police said on Tuesday.

It said that a four-member team has been sent to Mumbai following registration of FIR.
"A four-member team has been sent to Mumbai. The team will collect case diary and other important documents from Mumbai Police," Sanjay Singh, Inspector General, Patna Central Zone said.

In the complaint made to Rajeev Nagar police station in-charge, KK Singh alleged that Rhea Chakraborty and her relatives "committed fraud" and "pressurised the actor for financial gains".

Sushant's father alleged that Chakraborty "got in touch with the actor with a motive to establish herself in the film industry using his contacts and she and her relatives started interfering in his affairs".

Mumbai, May 17: TV actor Manmeet Grewal, who worked on shows like "Aadat Se Majboor" and "Kuldeepak", committed suicide after struggling with dwindling finances amid lockdown, family friend-producer Manjit Singh Rajput said.

Grewal, who was originally from Punjab, hanged himself on Friday night at his Kharghar residence here where he lived with his wife. He was 32.

Rajput, who had known Grewal for nearly seven years, said the actor was facing "financial crisis" and wasn't able to earn due to the lockdown.

"He was going through a major financial issue and he was also in depression. The added pressure of not being able to repay loans amid this (no work phase) got to him. His wife is completely shocked and devastated," Rajput told PTI.

The producer said last rites of the actor were performed on Saturday.

Grewal was working on projects like a webseries and some commercials, which were put on hold due to the nationwide lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.
