IMA ponzy scam: Investors write to PM Modi, seek FIR under central law

Bengaluru, Oct 1: Unsatisfied with the CBI investigation into the I-Monetary Advisory ponzy scam, several investors have written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking registration of cases against the firm under Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019, a central legislation.

According to them, CBI, which had taken over investigation from the special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the state government, filed a chargesheet where the FIRs are neither registered under the Karnataka Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishments (KPID) Act, 2004, nor under the central law.

'We, the victims of the scam by IMA and its subsidiaries, request you to issue guidelines to CBI to register the FIR under Banning of Unregulated Deposit Schemes Act, 2019," IMA investors said. They claimed the central law is superior to that of KPID Act, which they were told is being invoked by CBI in its FIRs.

The new law is more stringent as it has been incorporated by amending various Acts, including RBI Act. If the complaints are received from more than one state, CBI gets jurisdiction to investigate the matter. Gazetted on July 31, 2019, the new law took effect from February 21, 2019 when the ordinance was issued.

Mangaluru, Jun 23: An elderly person, who was undergoing treatment for covid-19 in Mangaluru, breathed his last on today. 

The victim, identified by number P-6282, was a 70-year-old man. He had returned from Bengaluru on June 7. 

He was suffering asthma and pneumonia. He had Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) symptoms and was hence admitted to the designated covid-19 hospital in Mangaluru on June 12. 

His condition continued to worsen and today he breathed his last, sources said.

With this the total number the deaths of covid-19 patients in Dakshina Kannada district mounted to 9.

Shivamogga, Jun 20: Shivamogga District unit of Congress led by party veteran Kagodu Thimmappa staged a protest against state government's proposal to amend the land reform act, which will allow non-agriculturist to buy farmland.

The leaders of Farmers' Union (Raith Sangh) also staged a protest at Mahaveer circle and questioned CM's stand as he took oath in the name of farmers.

The district congress staged a protest at the premise of the Deputy Commissioner office in Shivamogga city.

The protesters termed Karnataka Government led by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa as an anti-farmers government.

According to Congress and Raith Sang, the proposed amendments to Karnataka State Land reforms act 1961 will cause harm to farmers.

"According to the proposed amendment, non-agriculturists like business tycoons can also purchase the agriculture land. This will help the businessman and will be harmful to farmers," protesters said.

Chitradurga,  Aug 2: Said to be 110-years-old, a grand old woman Siddamma was discharged on Saturday from a COVID Hospital in Chitradurga after recovering from the novel coronavirus.

According to Dr Basavaraj, District Surgeon, Chitradurga, the woman had tested positive for the disease on July 27.

After her recovery, the frail woman dressed in a sari was seen being wheeled out from the hospital.

As many as 5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths were reported in Karnataka on Saturday, taking the state's count of coronavirus cases to 1,29,287.

The active cases in the state now stand at 73,219 while 53,648 people have been discharged.

"5,172 new COVID-19 cases and 98 deaths reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, taking total cases to 1,29,287 including 53,648 discharges and 2,412 deaths. 

The number of active cases stands at 73,219," said State Health Department.

So far, a total of 2,412 people have succumbed to the virus in the State.
