Incessant rain claims 6 lives in Belgavi district alone

Belgaum, Aug 9: At least six people lost their lives in Belgaum district, as incessant rains continue to wreak havoc in Karnataka.

The India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the Upper Krishna Basin catchment area. The inflows into Belagavi district is 3.91 lakh cusecs.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa informed his Maharashtra counterpart Devendra Fadnavis that discharge from Almatti dam has now increased to 4,80,000 cusecs, sources from Maharashtra Chief Minister's Office said. 

Meanwhile, till 15 August, all schools and colleges - both government and private- in Dakshina Kannada, Uttar Kannada, Raichur, Bagalkot, Belagavi, Chikkodi, Shivamogga, Bidar, Haveri, Kodagu, Koppal, Yadgir, Kalaburgi, Dharwad, Ballari, Hassan, Udupi, and Gadag districts will remain shut.

Over 1,24,000 have been rescued in a joint operation conducted by Fire and Emergency rescue team, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Army so far in Belgaum and nearby districts  Bagalkot, Vijayapara, and Raichur.

There have been few incidens of minor landslides on few stretches of NH 66, NH 275, SH-91 (Virajpet-Makuta). As of now, over 1400 km of road, 211 bridges, 10 minor irrigation tanks, 4019 government buildings, 92 water supply infrastructure, 2575 electrical poles and four sanitation structures have been damaged. 

Two Indian airforce choppers have also been deployed and there is a plan to station one more in Raichur district.

Moreover, nine additional teams of NDRF have been deployed, with five in Belagavi, two in Kodagu and one team each in Uttara Kannada and Shivamogga. 

Karnataka government has issued directions to district surgeons and health and family development officer to not grant any leaves till August 15 because of the flood-like situation in the state.

Bengaluru, May 21: Karnataka reported 116 fresh cases of coronavirus on Thursday, taking the state tally to 1578. 

So far, 570 people have been cured and discharged while 41 have succumbed to the virus, informed the state health department.

Out of the 116 cases, 71 have a history of inter-state travel history to Maharashtra.

Out of the 116 cases, 27 are from Udupi alone, 15 cases are reported from Mandya and 13 are from Hassan. Bengaluru Urban saw seven new cases.

Mangaluru, Apr 19: District-in-charge Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary said that Rs 2000 each has been deposited in the bank accounts of 6,122 construction workers, who are registered with the labour department in the Dakshina Kannada district. The amount will be deposited in the accounts of other registered construction workers at the earliest.

The state government had announced Rs 2000 to construction labourers who are registered and have lost their livelihood due to the on-going nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the coronavirus. The curbs, which were imposed on March 24, have been extended till May 3. "The labourers were reeling under hardship after construction activities came to a halt," said the Minister.

Supply food

Local bodies should make arrangements to supply food for stranded labourers, destitutes and beggars in all the ULBs in Dakshina Kannada district, Poojary said. 

"No one should starve during the lockdown period. All the ULBs should identify destitutes, migrant labourers in their jurisdiction and arrange food for them. In case of necessity, the help of NGOs can also be taken," he added
The minister announced that Asha workers and health workers would collect information on people's health by visiting the houses in the district and submit a report within 10 days.

Bengaluru, Mar 23: Film producer, philanthropist and entrepreneur V K Mohan committed suicide by hanging himself in a hotel in the city on Monday, police said.

Mohan, who hailed from Kundapur Taluk, Udupi District, was a famous film producer and hotelier.

According to police, Mohan arrived at the hotel on Sunday night and when he did not open the door of his room on Monday, hotel staffs, grew suspicious and peeped through the room window, found him hanging.
