Ind vs Aus: Dhoni slams maiden double-ton, India dominate

February 24, 2013

Dhoni_slams_maiden_double-tonNew Delhi, Feb 24: Indian skipper MS Dhoni slammed his maiden double ton to help India cross 500-mark in their first innings against Australia in the first Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday.

Dhoni's previous best Test score was 148 against Pakistan.

Australian pacer Moises Henriques bowled out Harbhajan Singh to give India eighth blow at the score of 406.

India lost their seventh wicket when R Ashwin edged a Nathan Lyon delivery onto his stumps.

Tea report

Virat Kohli smashed his fourth Test hundred, while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni inched closer to his sixth as India reached 371 for six at tea.

Also notable was the magnificent half-century by Sachin Tendulkar (81).

At the break, Dhoni was holding fort with R Ashwin (3) giving him company.

India scored at a decent pace to be 263 for four at lunch, but after the break, the innings accelerated with Kohli and Dhoni breaking free against an attack that, despite asking a few questions, never looked very threatening.

Kohli eventually fell to Nathan Lyon, who was rewarded for his perseverance after grabbing Tendulkar's wicket in the morning session.

However, the breakthrough came only after Kohli and Dhoni had put on 128 runs for the fifth wicket and that too at rapid a pace.

The two were together for 26.1 overs and plundered 54 runs off the first seven overs with the new ball that was taken in the 83rd over.

Australian skipper Michael Clarke shuffled his bowling resources and even bowled himself but the home batsmen remained fluent in their stroke-making, entertaining the large Sunday crowd that turned up at the M A Chidambaram Stadium.

India's 300 was up in 87 overs but a couple of overs later, the team lost Kohli's wicket to a rather casual shot.

Trying to go over mid-on, Kohli failed to get the elevation and ended up holing out to Mitchell Starc. His superb knock included 15 fours and a six.

Kohli's departure, however, did not affect Dhoni, who went about his job with ease. The only time he seemed in trouble was in the 95th over when he survived a run out chance after a mix-up with Ravindra Jadeja.

The Indian skipper called for a single but backed out twice after seeing Phillip Hughes dive for the ball at midwicket. But Dhoni eventually risked the run after Hughes failed to collect the ball cleanly.

Earlier, in the morning session, Tendulkar missed out on a century but India scored at a brisk pace. The veteran was the only Indian to be dismissed in the first session but scoring remained unaffected as Dhoni and Kohli dropped anchor to put the home side in a comfortable position.

Clarke opened the bowling with tearaway pacer James Pattinson, who had taken all three of the Indian wickets to fall yesterday, hoping to get a quick breakthrough.

Pattinson bowled five overs in his first spell, gave away just six runs and asked quite a few questions from the set batsmen but could not get a wicket.

He completed 23 overs but managed to add just one wicket to the three wickets he picked up yesterday. That wicket was of Jadeja, who ran out of luck after 16 runs to the total.

Similar was the case of Peter Siddle, who was economical but unlike Pattinson, could not get a single wicket.

After Pattinson and Siddle could not get a wicket in their opening spells, Clarke changed the bowlers on both the ends, bringing in off-spinner Lyon and seamer Starc.

Lyon, against whom Tendulkar had survived a close leg-before shout yesterday, delivered when he dismissed the well-set veteran.

Tendulkar was on 81 and looked good for a hundred but Lyon denied him the milestone. The Australian tossed a delivery outside the off-stump in the 64th over which took a faint inside edge from Tendulkar's bat before spinning through to the stumps.

Tendulkar faced 159 deliveries during the knock, which was laced with seven fours. The right-hander had shared a 91-run stand with Kohli during his stay at the crease.

Los Angeles, Feb 14: Tributes to the late Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers legend who died last month in a helicopter crash, will play a major role in Sunday's 69th NBA All-Star Game.

This year's annual showcase of league talent will be played in Chicago and feature numerous nods to Bryant, a five-time NBA champion who also matched a league record with four NBA All-Star Game Most Valuable Player awards.

Bryant, an 18-time NBA All-Star, died at age 41 on January 26 in a crash near Los Angeles that also took the life of his 13-year-old daughter Gianna and seven others.

All-Star teams guided by LeBron James of the Lakers and Greek star Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks will compete to win each of the first three quarters, which will all start 0-0 and last 12 minutes.

At the start of the fourth quarter, the clock will be turned off and a final target score will be established by taking the leading club's cumulative score through the first three quarters and adding 24 points -- the number representing the jersey number worn by Bryant for the final 10 seasons of his NBA career.

The first team to reach the cumulative target score will win the NBA All-Star Game.

All-Star Game jerseys will also honor Bryant and his daughter.

Team Giannis players will wear jersey number 24 in tribute to Kobe while Team LeBron players will wear jersey number two, the number his daughter wore when playing youth basketball.

Both teams will wear jersey patches displaying nine stars, representing the nine people who were killed in the crash.

Academy Award-winning actress and Grammy Award-winning singer Jennifer Hudson, a Chicago native, will perform a special tribute to Bryant, his daughter and the others who were killed in the crash. Her performance will begin the night ahead of the player introductions.

James and Antetokounmpo each chose their squads from available starters and reserves voted and selected to the All-Star contest.

Team LeBron starters will include James, his Lakers teammate Anthony Davis, NBA scoring leader James Harden of Houston, Kawhi Leonard of the Los Angeles Clippers and Slovenian guard Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks.

Team Giannis starters include the Greek big man, Cameroon stars Joel Embiid of Philadelphia and Pascal Siakam of Toronto and guards Kemba Walker of Boston and Trae Young of Atlanta.

A record eight All-Star Game players from outside the United States also include Frenchman Rudy Gobert of the Utah Jazz on Team Giannis and Team LeBron reserves Ben Simmons of Australia and the Philadelphia 76ers, Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis of Indiana and Serbian Nikola Jokic of Denver.

Islamabad, Jun 13: Pakistan cricket team’s former captain Shahid Afridi, who has tested positive for coronavirus,  appears to have contracted the virus during his recent visit to Muzaffarabad city of Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK) where Pakistan has been sending its corona positive patients.

The former Pakistan cricketer was seen attending gatherings in Muzaffarabad last month without wearing a mask and not maintaining social distancing. He spewed venom against India during his rallies.

Afridi visited PoK to also express his solidarity with the people there who have been left to fend for themselves in combating COVID-19 as Pakistan has refused to provide any COVID fighting equipment like PPE kits and ventilators to the area’s handful of hospitals.

In fact, Pakistan has been using the PoK as a “dumping ground” for COVID-19 affected persons from all across the country as authorities want to keep Punjab province free of corona positive persons.

The locals held massive protests against Pakistan for setting up quarantine centres and shifting patients from parts of Pakistan to PoK.

People are immensely suffering in Pakistan occupied Kashmir due to spread of coronavirus as the region lacks proper medical facilities and has a handful of COVID-19 testing labs. There is also lack of expert medical staff to conduct COVID-19 tests.

A large number of people here are presumed asymptomatic and they are fast spreading the virus because of lack of medical care.

Pakistan has reported over 1,25,000 coronavirus cases and 2,463 casualties. In Pakistan occupied Kashmir, the COVID-19 cases have increased to 534, whereas in Gilgit-Baltistan 1,030 have been  reported.

Mumbai, Jan 24: Former Indian cricket captain and former MP Mohammad Azharuddin on Thursday denied allegations of cheating levelled by a travel agency in Maharashtra and threatened to file defamation suit of ₹100 crore.

"Those who filed the FIR have done it only to be in the limelight. There is no truth in it. The allegations are baseless," Azharuddin said in a video message on Twitter.

Azahruddin, who is now president of Hyderabad Cricket Association, said he would soon seek advice from his lawyer and will file Rs 100 crore defamation case against those who lodged the FIR.

A case was filed in Aurangabad on Wednesday against Azharuddin and two others for allegedly cheating a local travel agent of around ₹21 lakh.

The complaint was lodged by Shahab Y. Mohammed, 49, proprietor of Danish Tours & Travels here, a former executive with the defunct Jet Airways.

"We have lodged a first information report against Mujeeb Khan (Aurangabad), Sudheesh Avikkal (Kerala), Mohammed Azharuddin (Hyderabad). No arrests have been made and further investigations are underway," Investigating Officer A.D. Nagre, of the City Chowk police station, told IANS.

According to the complainant, between November 9 and 12, 2019, Avikkal booked several international airline tickets and Azharuddin's personal secretary Mujeeb Khan promised to pay the ticket charges. He said since no payment was made, he was compelled to lodge the police complaint.
