Ind vs NZ: Rahane, Dhoni take India over 300 in second Test

New Delhi, Feb 15: Ajnkya Rahane and captain MS Dhoni resumed the Indian first innings after tea on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve in Wellington on Saturday.

Rahane reached his third Test half-century off 93 balls with the help of seven hits to the fence.

The stand came after Neil Wagner gave India the sixth blow as he dismissed Virat Kohli after a stand of 63 runs with Rahane.

Kohli scored 38 and consolidated India's innings along with Rahane after New Zealand's bowlers took three wickets in the morning session.

Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed agonisingly short of his third Test century as India overhauled Kiwis' first innings total to reach 201/5 at lunch.

New Zealand were dismissed for 192 on the first day after Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and chose to bowl on the green and bouncy Basin Reserve pitch.

Nightwatchman Ishant Sharma, who took career-best figures of 6/51 in New Zealand's innings, proved just as much of an annoyance to the hosts with the bat early on Saturday.

The gangly pace bowler combined with Dhawan for a 52-run partnership and lasted almost an hour for his 26 runs.

Boult eventually broke the partnership when he pushed a delivery across Ishant, who only succeeded in getting a thick edge through to wicketkeeper BJ Watling.

Dhawan, who had resumed on 71, moved effortlessly through to 94 and then his innings fell apart.

He attempted a quick single, only for him to slip over mid wicket before he got back to his feet and made it back to his crease safely.

He forgot that mishap to drive Southee to the cover fence before his 14th boundary on the next ball and was within sight of a second successive Test century after he scored 115 in the first Test at Eden Park.

Southee, however, enticed him to lash at a full delivery on the next ball and Watling took a sharp catch to leave the dejected left-handed opener slowly trudging off.

Jimmy Neesham then managed to snap up his first Test wicket when Rohit Sharma waved his bat at a ball without moving his feet and only succeeded in getting a thick inside edge that clattered into his stumps to leave the visitors 165/5 and the hosts sniffing a fightback.

New Zealand hold a 1-0 lead in the two-match series after their 40-run victory at Eden Park in the first Test.

Mar 4: The BCCI has decided to implement strict cost cutting measures with the notable decision being IPL 2020 champions' prize money will be halved as compared to 2019. In a circular sent to all IPL franchises, the BCCI has notified that instead of a whopping Rs 20 crore, the IPL champion team will now receive Rs 10 crore only. "The financial rewards have been reworked as a part of the cost cutting measures. The champions will get Rs 10 crore instead of Rs 20 crore. The runners-up will get Rs 6.25 crore from earlier Rs 12.5 crore," a BCCI notification, in possession of news agency, read.

The two losing qualifiers will now get Rs 4.375 crore each.

"The franchises are all in good health. They also have multiple ways like sponsorships to bolster their income. Hence the decision on prize money taken," a senior BCCI source said.

However, a state association hosting IPL games will get Rs 1 crore each with franchises and BCCI contributing Rs 50 lakh each.

It has also been learnt that mid-level BCCI employees won't be allowed to avail business class flights like earlier times for flying to the Asian countries (Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE) where the flying time is less than eight hours.

Colombo, Aug 1: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has expressed his interest in playing the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL), scheduled to start from August 28.

Pathan is among 70 foreign players to have shown interest in playing the LPL, ESPNcricinfo reported.

It is believed that Pathan has taken permission from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take part in the competition. 

BCCI doesn't allow active players to participate in other T20 leagues but Pathan announced his retirement in January this year.

Former swashbuckling all-rounder Yuvraj Singh also played in a foreign league last year. He played for Maratha Arabians in the T10 League in Abu Dhabi.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Pathan will now be put in a player draft unless one of the five franchises choose him to be a marquee player. The details of the draft, and the franchise owners, are yet to be finalised and announced. 

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) is also waiting on some government clearances even as it decides on franchise owners. The five franchises will represent Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna.

On Monday, SLC Executive Committee granted approval for the tournament.

"The 23 match League will be played on the four international venues of R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium. Five teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the League," SLC said in a statement on Monday.

Sri Lanka has controlled the spread of COVID-19 better than many other cricket-playing nations.

Melbourne, Feb 29: India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur on Saturday said the team management has given Shafali Verma the freedom to play her natural game, which has set the Women's T20 World Cup ablaze.

The 16-year-old announced her emergence on the global stage by becoming the second highest run getter in the ongoing tournament. She has so far scored 161 runs, hitting 18 fours and nine sixes in four matches at an astounding strike rate of 161.

On Saturday, Shafali hit a 34-ball 47 to steer India to a seven-wicket victory over Sri Lanka after spinner Radha Yadav produced a career-best 4/23.

"Shafali is someone who loves to play big shots, and we don't want to stop her. She should continue doing the same and she should continue enjoying her game," Harmanpreet said after the match.

India entered the semifinals with an all-win record as they led Group A with eight points from four games and the captain insisted it is important to continue the winning momentum.

"It's really important to keep the momentum when you are winning games. You really work hard, so you can't afford to lose that momentum. You can't bowl same pace and lengths on these wickets, so you need to keep rotating the bowlers."

"Today I tried to be positive and got a few boundaries. In the upcoming games I'll try to give my best," Harmanpreet said.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Atapattu rued the reprieves given by her side to Shafali in the form of two dropped catches.

"I think that score was not enough, we lost couple of chances, specially Shafali, it was hard to stop her," she said.

"Yeah, I got a good start but unfortunately got out in the 10th, would have wanted to stay in there till the 16th or the 17th over. I hope we can beat Bangladesh in our last game," she added.
