India deserves lion's share of ICC revenue: Cricket Australia

February 1, 2014

ICC_revenueMelbourne, Feb 1: Cricket Australia Chairman Wally Edwards has come out in strong support of the BCCI receiving a lion's share of world cricket revenue, saying that India deserves a fair compensation for contributing 80 per cent of the revenue by "hiring out" its team.

Talking about the new revenue distribution model in the controversial ICC revamp plan that would see the BCCI receiving the lion's share, Edwards said people should understand that India will get just 20 per cent of ICC revenue despite contributing 80 per cent of it.

"I think what we have negotiated is more than fair. They (India) are contributing towards 80 per cent of the money and they're taking about 20 per cent for hiring their team for the ICC. They are hiring their team out and people need to understand that is worthy of compensation," he said.

"The reality is everybody -- 106 nations -- gets more money in the new deal. Nobody is going backwards assuming we get the right number when we go to tender, and guess what, if it ends up the same number we've had for the last eight years, India don't get any more money than anyone else. It's not as if we have deserted the rest of them. We want world cricket to thrive, not go backwards," he was quoted as saying in the 'Sydney Morning Herald'.

Edwards describes the controversial governance revamp of the ICC proposed by India, England and Australia -- which has also got the backing of the CA Board of Directors -- as "critical for the future of the game".

"These reforms are absolutely critical for the future of the game and I don't just mean Test cricket. We have to get to a point where everybody wants to be part of this and see the game improve. My focus has always been the game, not the money," he said.

"Change is very important. I have worked very hard to make sure we have protected a lot of important things and if people just concentrate on the fact that India get more of the money and Australia gets marginally more than South Africa, and South Africa gets marginally more than Pakistan and New Zealand gets a bit more than Zimbabwe, then so be it," he added.

The newspaper report also said that CA played the role of a broker in trying to heal the rift between India and South Africa which is opposing the ICC revamp plan.

Australia, which is about to embark on a three-Test series against the number one Proteas, have opened talks with Cricket South Africa about tours beyond the next five years, the report said.

It also talked about the scope for an 11th country to play Test cricket, with the winner of the Intercontinental Cup between the top eight Associates possibly playing the lowest-ranked Test country for the right to play Tests.

Meanwhile, a write-up in 'The Australian' mocked at the controversial revamp plan of the ICC proposed by the 'Big Three', saying the the world body should now be re-named IAWS (I Agree With Srini).

"Farewell, then, International Cricket Council, we hardly knew you. And we can hardly claim to mourn when we spent most of our time undermining, flouting and bitching about you. For the new experimental trilateralism that will succeed the old trainwreck multilateralism, a new name is surely necessary," the write-up said.

"Perhaps IAWS: I Agree With Srini. Because there's surely going to be an ongoing competition about who can say that in meetings first."

Chennai, Jan 26: Former India cricketer Kapil Dev on Saturday said that it will be a big loss for the Indian side when MS Dhoni decides to hang up his boots.

"I think he has served the country so well and nobody has done it like him. Everyone has to retire sooner or later. He is not playing matches currently. So I don't know when he will come out one day and say -- I have had enough. I think it will be our loss because he is such a fabulous cricketer," Dev told reporters here.

In the recently released BCCI contracts list, Dhoni did not find a place for himself. The former World Cup winning captain Dev said that it is unfortunate that Dhoni was not included in the contract list.

"I feel sorry that they have not included him.

Tendulkar, Gavaskar had to witness the same. It's not my job and I am not there to give the contract to anyone. It is the job of the cricket board. So, I don't know. You can ask this question to the cricket board. They will be able to answer this question," Dev said.

The 38-year-old Dhoni is currently enjoying some time away from the game. He last played competitive cricket during the 2019 World Cup.

Dhoni had to face criticism for his slow batting approach during India's matches in the tournament.

Especially in the games against England and New Zealand (semi-final), he had to bear the brunt of netizens, who deemed him as the reason for the Men in Blue's loss.

BCCI released the list of central contract list of players for the period from October 2019 to September 2020.

Jun 5: The Asian Football Confederation has awarded the hosting rights of the 2022 Women's Asian Cup to India for the first time since 1979.

The decision was taken at the AFC Women's Football Committee meeting. In February, the AFC Women's Football Committee had recommended India to be hosts.

In a letter to the All India Football Federation, Dato Windsor John, General Secretary, AFC wrote: "The Committee awarded the hosting rights of the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2022 Finals to the All India Football Federation."

The tournament will likely be held in the second half of the year. In the 1979 edition, India had finished as runners-up.

"I need to thank the Asian Football Confederation for finding us suitable to host the AFC Women's Asian Cup in 2022," AIFF President, Praful Patel said.

"The tournament will galvanise the aspiring women players and bring in a holistic social revolution as far as women's football in the country is concerned," he added.

The tournament will feature 12 teams, expanded from the previous slot of eight teams.

India qualifies directly as hosts. The event will also serve as the final qualification tournament for the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

The tournament comes as the latest boost to AIFF as India is slated to host the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup next year.

India had also hosted the AFC U-16 Championships in 2016 and the FIFA U-17 World Cup in 2017.

"The tournament will play a huge role in further popularising women's football in India. The Women’s Asian Cup 2022 comes on the back of the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup India 2020, and will help us sustain, and build on the momentum gained," AIFF General Secretary, Kushal Das said.

New Delhi, Jul 1: After being named as India's 'Most Valuable Player' in Test cricket in the 21st century, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja on Wednesday said that he will always aim to give his best for the country.

His remark came as Jadeja achieved an MVP rating of 97.3 and as a result, he was also rated as the second most valuable player Test player worldwide, only second to Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan.

"Thank you Wisden India for naming me the 'Most Valuable Player'. I would like to thank all my teammates, coaches, fans, and well-wishers for your support as I aim to give my best for our country. Jai Hind," Jadeja tweeted.

Based on CricViz's market-leading analytics, each player in world cricket was awarded an 'MVP rating' by Wisden using a statistical model to rank their 'match impact' compared to their peers.

Jadeja has played in 49 Tests from 2012, managing to score 1,869 runs and has also picked up 213 wickets.

"It might come as a surprise to see Ravindra Jadeja, India's spin-bowling all-rounder, feature as India's number one. After all, he's not even always an automatic pick in their Test team. However, when he does play he is picked as a frontline bowler and has batted as high as No.6 - contributing to a very high match involvement," the official website of Wisden quoted CricViz's Freddie Wilde as saying.

"But Jadeja's position is based on more than simply volume: it's what he does when he's involved that really counts. The 31-year-old's bowling average of 24.62 is better than Shane Warne's and his batting average of 35.26 is better than Shane Watson's. His batting and bowling average differential of 10.62 runs is the second-best of any player this century to have scored more than 1,000 runs and taken 150 wickets. He is an all-rounder of the very highest quality," he added.

With the bat in hand, Jadeja has managed to score one century and 14 fifties in the longest format of the game.

He was last seen in action during India's two-Test series against New Zealand earlier this year.

He would have been in action for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the IPL had the tournament commenced from March 29.

However, the IPL has been postponed indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic.
