India may defer talks, expects Pak to act

New Delhi, Jan 10: India is running out of patience and may defer resumption of its stalled dialogue with Pakistan, which is yet to act against any of the Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror plotters behind the recent attack on the Pathankot Air Force base in Punjab.

If Pakistan does not act over the weekend on the information provided by India on the terror plot, New Delhi may defer Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar’s proposed visit to Islamabad for a meeting with his counterpart A A Chaudhry on January 15. A final decision is likely to be taken early next week.

The meeting between Jaishankar and Chaudhry was to mark resumption of India-Pakistan parleys as Comprehensive Bilateral Dialogue after a two-year hiatus since January 2013.

Radio Pakistan on Saturday quoted Khwaja Muhammad Asif, defence minister of the neighbouring country, stating that no terrorist group would be allowed to derail the dialogue process between Islamabad and New Delhi.

His comment was in line with the statement Islamabad issued on Friday after Pakistan Prime Minister M Nawaz Sharif reviewed the progress of his government’s actions on the information provided by New Delhi. India, however, wants Pakistan to translate words into action promptly and act against JeM founder Maulana Masood Azhar, his brother Abdul Rauf Ashgar and close aides Ashfaq Ahmad, Hafiz Abdul Shakur and Kasim Jaan.

Officials told Deccan Herald on Saturday that New Delhi had expected Islamabad to take at least some action against the JeM by now.

They pointed out that five days had passed since National Security Advisor Ajit Doval had shared with his Pakistani counterpart Naseer Khan Janjua details of the plotters, who had coordinated the attacks from the outfit’s headquarters in Bahawalpur in Pakistan.

“That we are running out of our patience and anxiously waiting for them to act has been conveyed to Pakistan government,” a senior official said in New Delhi. India is also understood to have made it clear that it would be difficult for Jaishankar to visit Islamabad and meet Chaudhry, until and unless Pakistan government acts against the JeM.

Jaishankar, who is on a tour to Tokyo, will return to New Delhi on Sunday. He and Doval are likely to brief the Prime Minister on Monday about Islamabad’s response to information provided by New Delhi on the terror plotters.

Meanwhile, sources noted that New Delhi had never officially announced the Foreign Secretary-level talks on January 15. Hence, there is no question of calling off the engagement. New Delhi is ready with an alternative plan for Jaishankar to visit Male to discuss bilateral issues with Maldivian government, around the same time next week when he was to visit Islamabad. The Foreign Secretary is also scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from January 17.

New Delhi, Apr 9: Kerala opposition coalition United Democratic Front on Thursday submitted a roadmap to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for staggered lifting of ongoing lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The coalition led by leader of opposition Ramesh Chennithala has given a set of recommendations to Modi in this regard, which include those made by an expert committee headed by deputy leader of opposition M K Muneer.

The committee was set up to suggest measures to be taken by the government for smooth transition from lockdown to normalcy.

It listed an eight-point exit strategy for removing lockdown in a staggered approach at a district level, with emphasis on hotspots to avoid further spread of virus and ensure smooth restart of economy.

This approach is tuned to the unique needs of each district and all the districts should also be categorised as per their risk levels, the report said.

The report has also been submitted to chief ministers of all states, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi, senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi among others.

The committee recommended that COVID-19 rapid testing must be enhanced across the country and the testing target be widened to 500 tests per one lakh population.

"A step-by-step approach is necessary for each sector along with conditions that need to be considered for each sector," the report said.

"There is a need for a comprehensive economic stimulus package in addition to the ones already announced after considering all the industries," it added.

Kolkata, Jan 12: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said a section of the youth is being misguided about the Citizenship Amendment Act and asserted that it will not take away anybody's citizenship.

Modi also said whoever has faith in India and believes in its Constitution can become an Indian citizen.

“There are a lot of questions among the youth about the new citizenship law, and some are being misled by rumours around it... it is our duty to clear their doubts,” the PM said during an address at Belur Math in Howrah district.

“I want to make this clear again that the CAA is not about taking away anybody's citizenship, but about granting citizenship,” he added.

Modi said that some people with political interests are deliberately spreading rumours about the new citizenship law.

Lauding the youth for speaking against religious persecution of minorities, the prime minister said the energy of the country's young will form the basis of change in the 21st century. The PM is on a two-day visit to the city.
