India offers red carpet, not red tape: Modi

Tokyo, Sep 2: Telling Japanese investors that there was no better place than India to set up their overseas enterprises, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Tuesday said: "I've come to assure you there is no red tape but only red carpet that awaits you in India."

India red carpetDelivering the keynote address at the Tokyo Stock Exchange, co-hosted by Japan External Trade Organization (Jetro), Modi said India was also the only place where the Japanese industry will pleasantly find all the three 'Ds" -- democracy, demography and demand.

"I have come here to assure you that if you have to look anywhere outside Japan, you do not need to look here or there," he said, adding: "We particularly want to encourage and invite small and medium enterprises, as also small-scale industries."

The prime minister said India now has a government that is working on development and wants to step up manufacturing. He said he wished for India what he himself experienced when he was young when he did not have to think twice if a product said "Made in Japan".

Modi also recalled the major initiative launched by former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee -- the Look East Policy -- to strengthen India-Japan relations and said it had now taken firm shape.

"Just as India is focusing on Look East policy, it seems Japan is now pursuing a 'Look at India Policy'," he said, adding India will strive to replicate the Japanese model of work culture so as to attract more Japanese investment.

According to the organisers, some 4,000 people had wanted to hear Modi speak at the event, hoping for an interaction as well, but only 2,000 could be accommodated.

Geneva, May 27: The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide has increased by nearly 100,000 over the past 24 hours to surpass 5.4 million, the World Health Organisation (WHO) said.

According to the WHO, the global case tally currently stands at 5,404,512 -- a rise by 99,780 over the past day.

The death count worldwide amounts to 343,514 -- an increase by 1,486.

Most cases of infection are recorded in the Americas -- 2,454,452, with 143,739 deaths.

Washington D.C, Jul 8:  US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo on Tuesday (local time) announced visa restrictions on some Chinese officials under the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act, 2018.

"Today I am announcing visa restrictions on PRC government and Chinese Communist Party officials determined to be "substantially involved in the formulation or execution of policies related to access for foreigners to Tibetan areas," pursuant to the Reciprocal Access to Tibet Act of 2018," Pompeo said.

"Access to Tibetan areas is increasingly vital to regional stability, given the PRC's human rights abuses there, as well as Beijing's failure to prevent environmental degradation near the headwaters of Asia's major rivers," he said.

The US Secretary of State pointed out that Beijing has continued "systematically to obstruct travel to the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) and other Tibetan areas" by U.S. diplomats and other officials, journalists, and tourists, while PRC officials and other citizens enjoy far greater access to the United States.

"The United States will continue to work to advance the sustainable economic development, environmental conservation, and humanitarian conditions of Tibetan communities within the People's Republic of China and abroad," he said.

Pompeo said US also remains "committed to supporting meaningful autonomy for Tibetans, respect for their fundamental and unalienable human rights, and the preservation of their unique religious, cultural, and linguistic identity".

"In the spirit of true reciprocity, we will work closely with the U.S. Congress to ensure U.S. citizens have full access to all areas of the People's Republic of China, including the TAR and other Tibetan areas," he said.

Manila, Aug 2: The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines has exceeded the 100,000 marks with a record 5,032 new infections registered on Sunday, the Health Ministry's data showed.

With the total cases now reaching 103,185, the spread of COVID-19 in the Southeast Asian nation is steeply rising. The daily growth rate just this Thursday set a record at over 3,800 cases, the next day there were nearly 4,000 new infections detected and on Saturday, over 4,800 cases were detected.

More than 65,000 people have recovered from the ailment, while 2,059 people have died.

The Philippines' epidemiological dynamic mirrors that of many Southeast Asian nations, where COVID-19 infections have only recently begun to climb. 

Most other nations in Europe and the Americas experienced an initial spread of the virus which later tailed off only to begin climbing again after easing of restrictions.
