India recall Rohit, Vijay for Australia test tour

Mumbai, Oct 27: India have recalled batsmen Rohit Sharma and Murali Vijay to their 18-man test squad for the tour to Australia, opting to bank on experience for the four-match series.

Veteran Parthiv Patel was chosen as the second wicketkeeper along with the 21-year-old Rishabh Pant, who made his test debut during India's five-match series in England.

Rohit has shown strong form in limited overs matches but was dropped from the test side following a poor return in South Africa earlier this year when he scored 78 runs in four innings.

Vijay and Shikhar Dhawan opened for India in the first match of the England series but the duo were dropped during the 4-1 defeat and also left out of India's two-test home series against West Indies.

The right-handed Vijay, however, responded to his exclusion by making a hundred and three half-centuries for Essex in the County Championship.

"We felt that Rohit's nature of play, a very good back-foot player, his game is suited for Australia," India's chief selector MSK Prasad told reporters.

"Murali Vijay was dropped from the England series. He went back and he played the county and showed his intent and performed and considering the intensity of the series, we've considered him for the Australia series."

The 18-year-old Prithvi Shaw, who made a sparkling debut with a century against West Indies, and Lokesh Rahul were the other openers in the squad.

All-rounder Hardik Pandya, who injured his back during the Asia Cup, has not recovered sufficiently to make the squad and Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja will fill the role in Australia.

"It's very difficult to match Hardik's all-round ability," Prasad said.

"At least we don't see that kind of ability now in India. That's why no other alternatives were discussed. And we expect Bhuvi can come good, we know he can bat."

India's regular wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha continues to be on the sidelines, recovering from a shoulder and thumb injury, which opened the door again for Patel, who has played 25 tests for India.

There was, however, good news on the pace bowling front with India travelling to Australia at full strength with Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav all available.

Off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav will be the slow bowling options alongside Jadeja.

"If you see the selection we have done, it's a mix of youth and experience which we really wanted because it's going to be a high-intensity test series," Prasad said. "That's why we fell back on experience."

India will play a three-match Twenty20 series before the first test starts in Adelaide from Dec. 6.

Perth, Melbourne and Sydney will host the remainder of the tests followed by a three-match one-day international series.

Squad: Virat Kohli (captain), Murali Vijay, Lokesh Rahul, Prithvi Shaw, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vice-captain), Hanuma Vihari, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Parthiv Patel, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Mumbai, Jan 9: Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels that the Men in Blue have the edge over Australia in terms of talent and confidence ahead of the two teams' three-match ODI series starting January 14 in Mumbai.

"In the past that wasn't the case because they were doing really well. We were trying to match that level. I feel that Indian cricket is a notch ahead in terms of talent, in terms of cricket and in terms of confidence," Star Sports expert Irfan Pathan said. "The only thing that will make it equal is the kind of pitches we are going to play in Australia because we do not have experience playing on those hard and bouncy pitches," said Pathan, who recently called time on his international career.

Recounting his favourite memory of playing against Australia, Irfan said, "It all started in Australia for me. The most memorable moment was getting my first wicket and helping India win a Test match in Australia after 21 years. Winning the Test in Perth and being named the Man of the Match is also a favourite memory for me."

Australia have already announced their team for the three-match ODI series with India. The team will be led by Aaron Finch. The other members of the team are Ashton Agar, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins, Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Kane Richardson, D'Arcy Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, David Warner, and Adam Zampa.

India are yet to announce their team but in all probability, it will be led by Virat Kohli who has been in phenomenal form over the last few years. All three ODIs are day and night affair. While the first match of the series is on January 14 in Mumbai, the second will be played at Rajkot on January 17 followed by the January 19 clash in Bengaluru.

Hamilton, Jan 28: No one sits on the seat that Mahendra Singh Dhoni made his own in the team bus, revealed India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, saying that the talismanic former skipper is missed by the side.

In a video shot inside the team bus while it was on its way to Hamilton for the third T20 International against New Zealand, Chahal is seen talking to several members of the squad including Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul.

Towards the end of the video, he moved to the rear of the bus and pointed to an empty seat which, he said, was the former captain's preferred spot before he went on a sabbatical last year.

"Yeh woh seat hai jahan ek legend baithate the. Mahi bhai. Abhi bhi yaha koi nahi baithata. Hum unhe bohot miss karte hai (This is the seat that used to be occupied a legend. MS Dhoni. No one sits here now. We miss him a lot)," Chahal said in the video posted on 'bcci.tv'.

The-38-year-old Dhoni has not played a competitive game since the World Cup semifinal loss to New Zealand on July 9. Earlier this month, Dhoni was dropped from the BCCI's list of centrally contracted players, raising fresh doubts on his future.

However, on the same day, Dhoni returned to training, batting fluently in the Jharkhand team nets.

Head coach Ravi Shastri has hinted that the celebrated wicketkeeper-batsman might retire from ODIs soon but will be in contention for a T20 World Cup berth provided he does well for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

The Indian team lead the five-match T20 series against New Zealand 2-0.

Virat Kohli's men will take on the hosts in the third T20 here on Wednesday.
