India resorts to massive firing on Pak border

October 9, 2014

New Delhi, Oct 9: Even as India resorted to massive firepower to silence Pakistani guns from across the border, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said everything will be all right soon.

Pak border“Sab theek ho jayega (everything will be all right soon),” Modi said at the At Home function hosted by IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha here on Wednesday. Modi made the statement while responding to queries from the media.

The directors general of military operations (DGMOs) from India and Pakistan spoke via the hotline on Tuesday about the need to de-escalate the situation. The scenario near the International Border (IB) in Jammu, however, remained unchanged.

As firing continued from the Pakistani side, officials said there will be no flag meeting till shelling stops from across the border. The troops have been asked to respond to Pakistani firing and continue with the no-talk stand.

“No talks, continue firing. This is the message we have given to them (Border Security Force) also,” a senior Home Ministry official said.

Sources said the Pakistani Army, Rangers and the Lashkar-e-Toiba were firing shoulder-to-shoulder in a coordinated, systematic and well-planned manner. At least two civilians and 20 others were injured on the Indian side in the last 24 hours. So far, seven people have been killed and close to 60 injured in the shelling.

Border Security Force (BSF) sources said Pakistan Rangers targeted 54 border outposts across Jammu. Cross-border firing continued at all BSF sectors in the area, including Akhnoor, RS Pura, Kanachak and Arnia.

Three personnel suffered injuries and one of them was airlifted to Delhi.

“The government is taking it seriously and we want a quick resolution. We want peace and tranquillity. The government is taking a number of steps, diplomatically and otherwise,” said Raha, who is also the chairman of the Chief of Staff Committee.

Earlier in the day, Army Chief Gen Dalbir Singh Suhag said the Army had given an effective and immediate response to Pakistani shelling. Several Pakistani structures were destroyed though there is no official confirmation on their numbers.

The prime minister was seen having a one-on-one with Gen Suhag at the At Home function before he made the statement.

Throughout the day, Modi was under attack from Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi who asked why the prime minister was silent on the issue of ceasefire violations by Pakistan. About 20,000 people from 30 odd border villages have been shifted to safer locations.

Army officials, however, claimed that there was no firing across the 740 km long Line of Control (LoC) in Kashmir since Tuesday night.

Before the lull, there were seven incidents of firing at Poonch, Mendhar, Krishna Ghati and Bimbergali sectors on the LoC.

National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, who has been tasked by the prime minister to defuse the crisis, reviewed the situation along with Home Secretary Anil Goswami.

The ground zero has flared up considerably since October 3 when shelling from the Pakistan side began. The firing on border villages took place though the two DGMOs decided in August to spare civilians.

Pakistan claimed it began the fresh round of firing after 9 civilians were killed and 25 injured in Sialkot by unprovoked Indian firing.

Kolkata, July 13: Debendra Nath Roy, a member of the West Bengal legislative assembly (MLA) from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), was found dead near his house in north Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Monday morning.

BJP leaders and his family members have alleged that he was murdered.

BJP president JP Nadda has expressed “shock” at Roy’s “deplorable and suspected heinous killing” and condemned the incident.

He questioned the rise of “gunda raj” in West Bengal under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s watch amid the worsening law and order in the state, which is slated to hold assembly polls next year, where the BJP is seen to be the primary challenger to the CM’s citadel.

“The suspected heinous killing of Debendra Nath Ray, BJP MLA from Hemtabad in West Bengal, is extremely shocking and deplorable. This speaks volumes of the gunda raj and failure of law and order in the Mamata Banerjee-led government. People will not forgive such a government in the future. We strongly condemn the incident,” he tweeted.

The BJP has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the lawmaker’s unnatural death.

His body was found in the balcony of a shop near his house at Bondol in Hemtabad, Uttar Dinajpur district, on Monday morning.

“The body has been sent for autopsy. We are investigating the case. No one has been detained for questioning or arrested so far,” said a police official from Uttar Dinajpur district, requesting anonymity.

“Roy was murdered. The way his body was found suggests that it was a premeditated murder and the accused tried to pass it off as a suicide. The ruling TMC (Trinamool Congress) is involved in his murder,” alleged Rahul Sinha, national secretary, BJP.

The TMC, however, refuted the BJP’s allegations.

“I heard that he (Roy) died by suicide. Police are investigating the case. Let the truth come out. If he has been murdered, then the culprits should be identified and punished as per law,” said Kanhaiyalal Agarwal, a TMC leader from Uttar Dinajpur district.

BJP leaders said some people had called Roy around 1 am on Monday and he went out of his home. His body was found on Monday morning.

Roy had won the Bengal assembly elections from Hemtabad on a Communist Party of India (Marxist) ticket in 2016, but joined the BJP last year.

New Delhi, Feb 16: Just an hour ahead of the swearing-in ceremony, Arvind Kejriwal invited the people of Delhi again for his oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan today.

Referring himself as "son of Delhi", the AAP convener today tweeted saying, "Delhiites, your son is going to take oath as Delhi chief minister for the third time. You must come to bless your son".

The AAP national convener will be sworn-in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the third time in a row.

Arvind Kejriwal is scheduled to take oath along with other ministers at Ramlila Maidan.

On Saturday, Kejriwal, through a tweet, has said that autorickshaw drivers, students, teachers, doctors, labourers, etc will be the "chief guests".

The guest list put out by the AAP includes ''Delhi ke Nirmata''- people who contributed to the development of the city during the last five years.

These include Sumit Nagal, a Delhi government school student and an international Tennis player, Laxman Chaudhry an auto driver, Manu Gulati a teacher and "one of the many architects of Delhi Governance Model", Dalbir Singh a farmer, Ratan Jamshed Batliboi - the architect of the famous Signature Bridge among others.

By winning 62 seats by cashing in on the plank of development, his party nearly repeated its 2015 performance, sweeping the Assembly polls in the face of a high-voltage campaign by the BJP, which had fielded a battery of Union Ministers and Chief Ministers in its electioneering, spearheaded by Home Minister Amit Shah.

The BJP marginally improved its tally, managing just eight seats from its 2015''s tally of three seats. The Congress failed to open its account in the second successive election.
