Indian equities open higher after Monday mayhem

Mumbai, Aug 25: Overlooking global cues, Indian share markets opened higher on Tuesday, a day after the mayhem in the global financial markets and a crash in China spooked a key Mumbai index into shedding some 1,625 points, or nearly 6 percent.

sensexThe sensitive index (Sensex) of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) opened at 25,916.26 points, against the previous close at 25,741.56 points, and a few minutes into trading it was ruling at 26,091.71 points, with a gain of 349.15 points, or 1.36 percent.

At the National Stock Exchange (NSE), the broader 50-share Nifty was also ruling higher at 7,910.45 points, with a gain of 101.35 points, or 1.30 percent.

Weak global cues and the shock from China where the markets crashed over fears that its economy was slowing faster than expected sent Indian indices and the rupee into a tailspin on Monday. The Sensex logged its steepest closing fall in point-terms. The rupee fell to a two-year low.

Key US indices also took a tumble of around 4 percent. A day later, the investor sentiments continued to be grim globally. Tokyo's Nikkei opened nearly 2 percent lower on Tuesday, and the bloodbath in China continued unabated. The Shanghai Composite index opened 6.2 percent lower.

New Delhi, June 21: India today recorded the highest single-day spike in infections so far with 15,413 new cases reported in the last 24 hours. The total number of positive cases in India touched 4.11 lakh on Sunday.

As per the Ministry of Health data, the total number of coronavirus cases stands at 4,10,461 cases which include 1,69,451 active cases, 2,27,756 recovered/migrated cases, and 13,254 deaths as per the Ministry of Health data.

With 1,28,205 confirmed cases of COVID-19 so far, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu with 56,845 and Delhi 56,746. 

Delhi reported its highest single-day increase of 3,630 new coronavirus cases. With this, the state’s tally rose to 56,746. The toll rose to 2,112 with 77 deaths. As many as 7,725 people recovered, taking the total recoveries to 31,294.

Ghaziabad, Jul 28: Days ahead of Eid-ul-Adha, Nand Kishore Gurjar, a BJP MLA from Loni assembly constituency in Ghaziabad, has stoked controversy as he asked people celebrating the festival to "sacrifice their children instead of animals" on the occasion. He also claimed that "meat spreads coronavirus" so people should not be allowed to sacrifice innocent animals.

"People who want to sacrifice on Eid should sacrifice their children. I will not let people consume meat and alcohol in Loni. We will not let people sacrifice innocent animals because meat spreads coronavirus," the BJP legislator said while speaking to reporters.

"The way people have followed the guidelines of the government by not offering prayers and namaz at temples and mosques to contain COVID-19, in the same way, they must not give the sacrifice of animals on this Eid," he added.

"Earlier, sacrifices of animals used to be done in Sanatan Dharam as well. However, now coconut is offered instead. I request the Muslim brothers not to give 'qurbani' of animals. We will stop those who will perform the ritual animal sacrifice. We will not let this happen in Loni," he said.

Noida, Jan 6: A fire broke out at the ESIC Hospital in Noida on Thursday morning and firefighting was underway, officials said.

The blaze broke out in the basement of the seven-storey hospital building located in Sector 24, a police official said.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot after the Fire Department was alerted about it around 8 am, the official said.

After that, a search was done to see if anyone was trapped in the building, he said.

The cooling process is now underway.

He said the fire had engulfed the ground, first and second floors of the building, except the basement.

Police said they received information about fire at Kaveri printing press at 2:45 am, when the manager Yogesh called them. The press owners have been identified as Atul and Anuj Goyal, residents of Sukhdev Vihar, they said.

The man who died in the fire has been identified as Phool Dev, from Bihar, who used to work as a help there. Dev went inside the building in the night to sleep before the fire started and died due to suffocation, the fire department official said.

The body has been kept at Lal Bahadur Shastri Hospital and the post-mortem will be done once the family reaches here, police said.
