Indian expat among 5 killed in Sharjah apartment blaze

Sharjah, Feb 12: Two children were among five people who were killed after a fire broke out in their apartment in Sharjah at 3 am on Monday. The two children are believed to have died of suffocation, according to preliminary investigations. However, the victims were living in different apartments.

Eight seriously suffocated residents of the building have been admitted to the Kuwait Hospital.

The deceased include 35-year-old Indian man and a Pakistani woman beside an Arab mother and her two children. 

Amongst the deceased is a 40-year-old Pakistani woman, Ghazal who died in her sleep. Salman Shafiq, whose sister is the friend of Ghazal, said that they had just met on Friday.

"My sister who has flown out of the UAE, called me this morning and asked me to check on Ghazal who was not answering her phone," he told Khaleej Times. Salman then drove down from Abu Dhabi check where Ghazal's death was confirmed. Ghazal was married but living alone. Her brother, who is based in Dubai, is still unreachable and her car remains parked on its usual spot.

According to employees of a nearby supermarket, the deceased Indian man was around 35 years old and was living alone after sending his family back home to UP. His absence was felt when he did not respond to calls. His company Arabian Oasis sent their representatives to check on him, said the supermarket staff.

Abdullah, a worker at a supermarket, said the Arab lady who died used to come down every morning to take her two children to school in her Nissan Murang, which was seen parked just outside the supermarket. The woman was in her 40's.

The fire broke out in the first-floor apartment in Al Butina on Monday morning after which the tenants of the building were evacuated, a senior official confirmed to Khaleej Times.

Colonel Sami Khamis Al Naqbi, Director of the Sharjah Civil Defence, said the apartment was gutted in the fire.

Brig Mohammed Rashid Bayat, director of police operations department said that there is no criminal motive behind the fire. However, the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Moscow, Aug 7: Russia will register its first vaccine against the coronavirus on August 12, Deputy Health Minister Oleg Gridnev said on Friday.

The vaccine has been developed jointly by the Gamaleya Research Institute and the Russian Defence Ministry.

"The vaccine developed by the Gamaleya centre will be registered on August 12. At the moment, the last, third, stage is underway. The trials are extremely important. We have to understand that the vaccine must be safe. Medical professionals and senior citizens will be the first to get vaccinated," Gridnev told reporters at the opening of a cancer centre building in the city of Ufa.

According to the minister, the effectiveness of the vaccine will be judged when the population immunity has formed.

Clinical trials of the vaccine began on June 18 and included 38 volunteers. All of the participants developed immunity. 

The first group was discharged on July 15 and the second group on July 20.

Dubai, Apr 15: Saudi Arabia reported 493 new cases of coronavirus, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 5869, the Ministry of Health announced on Wednesday.

According to the ministry of health, the number of recoveries today are 42 cases, making total of recoveries in the kingdom 931. And 71 critical cases in intensive care.

The ministry also confirmed 6 deaths bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 79.

Saudi Arabia imposed a 24-hour curfew and lockdown on the cities of Riyadh, Tabuk, Dammam, Dhahran and Hofuf and throughout the governorates of Jeddah, Taif, Qatif and Khobar. This week the curfew was extended until further notice.

Overall, Saudi Arabia has reported one of the lowest rates of infection in the region, with around 5,000 cases in a population of over 30 million. Mecca was one of the first Saudi cities to be placed under a full-day curfew, and authorities took unprecedented precautions, suspending religious tourism in February and closing mosques across the country in March.

Dubai, May 4: An Indian salesman in the UAE has won a whopping 10 million dirhams at an Abu Dhabi draw, a media report said.

Dileep Kumar Ellikkottil Parameswaran, from Kerala’s Thrissur, works with an auto spare parts company in Ajman and earns 5,000 dirhams (USD 1,361) a month, Gulf News reported on Sunday.

Parameswaran, who won the 10 million dirhams (USD 2.7 million) prize at the Big Ticket draw in Abu Dhabi, will spend a big part of the money to repay a loan of 700,000 dirhams (USD 190,574 ), according to the report.

He said that a good part of the prize money will be spent on the education of his two children.

Parameswaran, who has been a resident of the UAE for 17 years, lives in Ajman along with his family.

Big Ticket is the largest and longest-running monthly raffle draw for cash prizes and dream luxury cars in Abu Dhabi.

A live monthly draw is organized at the Abu Dhabi International Airport on 3rd of each month.

Tickets are sold for 500 dirhams (USD 136).
