Indian markets need not be so sensitive to US data: Chidambaram

August 16, 2013
New Delhi, Aug 16: Attributing the 4 per cent plunge of the BSE Sensex to global factors, Finance Minister P Chidambaram today said the market should not be "so sensitive" to data flowing from the US but reflect Indian conditions.

"I have no doubt in mind, when calm is restored in the market, people will begin to understand India market indicators must basically reflect Indian market conditions. They should not be so sensitive to data coming out of the US," he said on sidelines of an event here.

The BSE 30-stock index, Sensex, fell nearly 770 points or 4 per cent and the rupee breached the 62 level against the US dollar on concerns among large investors of capital curbs. The gold prices too shot up by Rs 1,310 per 10 gram to Rs 31,010.

Worried over the developments, Chidambaram said: "I think this is time for calm; this is time for reflection and let's see what happens next week."

Observing that nothing has happened in the Indian economy between Wednesday and Friday morning, the minister said, "nevertheless the markets have taken a hit and that is reflected in the rupee also. We have taken a number of measures...a number of measures are being taken. Let's wait to see what the first quarter growth rates are."

Chidambaram said markets all over the world have taken a hit in reaction to job reduction data that came out of the US.

"A fewer people are waiting for jobs in US or a few more people are waiting for jobs in US, how does it affect the fundamentals of Indian economy. It does not. I thought that is elementary...if they have come down or they go up has really no relevance or impact on Indian economy.

"Nevertheless markets react to these signals that have come out of US. They reacted in the same way on May 22 when (US Federal Reserve chief) Ben Bernanke made a statement. They reacted in the same way to jobless claims numbers in the US. Sometimes I am surprised why they reacted," he said.

In case of India, Chidambaram said, as yesterday was a holiday, "Indian market has observed two days of hit in one day which is why it appears to be severe hit".

Earlier, while launching the National Skill Certification and Monetary Reward Scheme, he underlined the need for enhancing skills of workforce to ensure that they are gainfully employed.

The Minister said money will not be a constrain as far as funding of skill development programmes are concerned.

As many as 20 million jobs have been created between 2004-5 and 2009-10 and unemployment rate has declined in the country, he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia said the programme would benefit people in all walks of life.

The National Skilling Mission envisages adding 500 million skilled Indians by the year 2022. While 150 million are expected to be trained by the private sector working under National Skill Development Corporation, 350 million will be by 18-odd ministries at the Centre.

New Delhi, Jun 26: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Friday said the central government cannot shirk its responsibility of securing our borders with China and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take the nation into confidence on the situation in Ladakh.

In a video message put out as part of the Congress party's campaign to honour the Army personnel who sacrificed their lives in Ladakh, she asked why the country's soldiers were martyred when China has not captured any Indian territory, as claimed by the Prime Minister.

"Today when there is a crisis-like situation at the India-China border, the central government cannot shirk its responsibility (of securing them)," she said in a video message as part of 'SpeakUpForOurJawans' campaign.

"The country wants to know if China has not captured our land in Ladakh, as claimed by the Prime Minister, then why were our 20 soldiers martyred," she asked.

She said while the Prime Minister says there is no intrusion into Indian territory, experts after seeing satellite images talk of the presence of Chinese troops in our territory confirming the intrusions.

"When and how will the Modi government take back from China our land in Ladakh? Is our territorial integrity being violated by China in Ladakh? Will the Prime Minister take the nation in confidence on the situation at the border?" Gandhi asked.

She said the government should give full support and strength to the Army, saying "this will be true patriotism".

Dehradun, Jan 6: Universities are centres of learning and will not be allowed to become "addas" of politics, HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' has said.

The minister was replying to questions from reporters in Haldwani on Sunday about protests against the amended Citizenship Act across university campuses.

"Universities are centres of learning where the country's future is in the making. We cannot let them become addas of politics," Nishank said.

He accused the opposition parties of trying to turn the universities into hotbeds of politics.

The new legislation passed by Parliament aims to grant citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who had taken refuge in India and there is nothing wrong in it, the Union Minister said

"When Pakistan was created, the population of religious minorities there stood at 22 per cent. Today it is a minuscule 3.7 per cent. Persecuted on the basis of their religion, they sought sanctuary in India. The CAA is meant only to grant them citizenship," he said.

Terming the law humanitarian, the minister said it was going to make no difference to the status of Muslims in India and wondered why the Congress was making such a hue and cry about it.

Nishank's press conference in Haldwani was part of the BJP's campaign to create awareness in favour of the amended Citizenship Act.

New Delhi, Jan 7: The Delhi Police has filed an FIR against JNUSU president Aishe Ghosh and 19 others for allegedly attacking security guards and vandalising the server room of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on January 4.

The police registered the FIR on January 5.

In the complaint filed by the JNU administration, the University alleged that the accused were involved in physical violence and pushed the women guards, verbally abused them and threatened them of dire consequences if they opened the lock of university's communication and information (CIS) office.

"They illegally trespassed the University property with the criminal intention to damage the public property. They damaged servers and made it dysfunctional. They also damaged fiber optic power supplies and broke the biometric systems inside the room," the University officials alleged.

This incident allegedly occurred a day before Aishe Ghosh, other JNU students and teachers were attacked by a masked mob inside the campus.
