Indian Premier League 2014: Chennai Super Kings' New Recruit David Hussey Hoping to Fill in for Brendon McCullum

May 17, 2014

David_HusseyMay 17: Australian batsman David Hussey is likely to get a chance to play for Chennai Super Kings on May 22 and 24 in the Indian Premier League 2014 when New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum returns home for the birth of his child. Hussey was picked as a replacement for injured all-rounder Dwayne Bravo by Chennai Super Kings.

"The talk started a while ago, actually, with Dwayne Bravo having a sore shoulder," Hussey told iplt20.com referring to Chennai's move to include him in the squad.

The Australian T20 star arrived in India recently to honour a commentary commitment for the host broadcasters of the IPL.

"Stephen Fleming (CSK coach) rang me and asked if I would be interested in playing. I was lucky enough to be here commentating, and now, I can't wait to play. I have sort of spoken to Fleming and he said that I will be a middle-order player, and with Brendon McCullum due to go home for the birth of his baby, I'll definitely get an opportunity to play," Hussey said.

David's elder brother Michael Hussey was one of Chennai's finest overseas players, scoring 1691 runs in 46 games between 2008 to 2013, but the southpaw was not retained by the two-time champions, for inexplicable reasons. (Also read: Mumbai Indians must believe in Hussey: Ravi Shastri)

In fact, Michael was taken by surprise, when he was told on-air that his younger brother would join his former team.

West Indies all-rounder Bravo was ruled out of the tournament after injuring his shoulder while fielding against Kings XI Punjab during the teams' first match in in the UAE.

There have been a few injuries in this edition of the IPL with the technical committee approving all the requested replacements of the respective franchises.

Uttar Pradesh medium-pacer Praveen Kumar recently joined Mumbai Indians after Zaheer Khan bowed out with an injury while South African leg-spinner Imran Tahir was bought by the Delhi Daredevils as Nathan Coulter-Nile's replacement.

Earlier Nic Maddinson of Royal Challengers Bangalore also opted out due a hamstring injury with Proteas batsman Rilee Rossouw beind added to the squad.

The 36-year-old David has played for Kolkata Knight Riders and Kings XI Punjab since 2008 and has appeared in 59 matches, scoring 1026 runs at an average of 25.65.

Hamilton, Jan 30: Caught unaware about the Super Over scenario, Rohit Sharma took five minutes to “find” his abdomen guard after the third T20 International against New Zealand had ended in a tie on Wednesday.

The India vice-captain said the team had almost given up with New Zealand going great guns at one point.

“Everything was packed. All my stuff was inside my bag. I had to get it out. It literally took me five minutes to find my abdomen guard because I didn’t know where it was,” Rohit said.

“I mean we never thought it would go to the Super Over, the way they were batting at one point. It looked like they could easily win the game,” he added.

New Delhi, Mar 13: The remaining ODI series between India and South Africa has been called-off amidst the rising concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.

"The second and third ODI between India and South Africa in Lucknow and Kolkata respectively are called off," the BCCI source told media persons.

The first match of the series was abandoned due to rain and wet outfield without a toss at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) stadium on Thursday.

The second and third ODI was scheduled to be played at Lucknow and Kolkata on March 15 and 18 respectively. Earlier on Thursday, the BCCI has decided to play the remaining two ODIs behind closed doors.

"After holding discussions with the MYAS and MOHFW, the BCCI on Thursday announced that the remaining two One-day Internationals (ODIs) of the three-match series of South Africa tour of India, 2020, will be played without any public gathering, including spectators," the BCCI had said in a statement.

The Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry has advised all the federations to avoid large gatherings.

World Health Organisation (WHO) on Wednesday had declared the coronavirus outbreak a 'pandemic' and expressed deep concerns.

The coronavirus disease was first detected in Wuhan in China's Hubei province, in late December, and has since spread worldwide.

Jun 20: Bengaluru FC (BFC) have signed Brazilian striker Cleiton Silva for a one-year deal, the ISL club said in a statement on Saturday.

As per the agreement, BFC have the option of extending Silva's contract for another year.

The 33-year-old, who started his career with Brazilian side Madureira, moved to Thailand where he spent the better part of the decade playing for Muangthong United and Suphanburi, apart from stints in Mexico and China.

Silva, who also operates on the wing, became the first foreign player to reach the 100-goal mark in Thailand and finished top scorer of the Thai League 1 for two seasons. He also tops the charts of the all-time leading scorers of the League.

His biggest success came at Muangthong where he racked up 57 goals in 79 appearances and won three major trophies in as many seasons at the club.

The Brazilian, who was in talks with the Blues last season before the deal didn't materialise, said he was glad to have finally made the move.

"I've signed with Bengaluru FC because I want to be a champion and this is a club that is always after titles. I have that opportunity once again at BFC. I want to make the club and its fans happy. I have been following the club for some time now because we were in talks a while ago. And I liked what I saw. I am looking forward to making my way to Bengaluru and am excited to meet my new teammates, the fans and embrace the city," said Silva.

Silva, thus, became BFC's first new foreign signing of the season after the club had handed extended deals with Juanan Gonzalez, Dimas Delgado and Erik Paartalu.

Bengaluru FC coach Carles Cuadrat said Silva's addition was an important one, given his penchant for scoring.

"Cleiton has a proven track record when it comes to scoring and this is an area we needed to strengthen on the squad. The goals aside, he even has an eye for a quality final pass and we're looking forward to working with him," he said.
