New Delhi, May 2: Indian weightlifters earned two quota places for Rio Olympics -- one each in men's and women's sections -- at the recently-concluded Senior Asian Championships at Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Indian women lifters collected 100 points and stood third, while men earned 129 points and finished sixth at the Championships, by virtue of which the country earned two berths for the Rio Games, to be held in August.

Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWLF) will hold trials across all weight divisions to select two lifters -- one man and one woman -- to represent the country at the Olympics.

"We have secured two quota places, one each in men's and women's categories. Now we will be holding trials to select the best two lifters who will represent India at the Rio Games," IWLF vice-president Sahdev Yadav said.

Yadav said the date of the trials will be decided later. "We will give our lifters some time to recover and then we will decide on a date to hold the trials," said Yadav.

Yadav said only those lifters who are training at the national camp will be eligible to take part in the trials.

"Only those training in the national camps are eligible to take part in the trials. Besides that, we will consider just those whose whereabouts are already with WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) and who have been a part of at least two international competitions," said Yadav.

At the Senior Asian Championships, which was held from April 21-30, Indian women put up an impressive performance. While Glasgow Commonwealth Games silver medallist Punam Yadav (63kg) bagged the sixth position, bronze medallist Saikhom Mirabai Chanu (48kg) and Sagolsem Thasana Chanu (58kg) finished at seventh place each.

2014 Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sanjita Chanu also did well in the women's 48kg to end at ninth spot.

Mirabai Chanu came up with a power-packed performance in 48kg as she smashed the national record in snatch with an effort of 84kg and equalling the national record in overall lift with 190kg (106kg in clean &jerk) en-route to her seventh-place finish.

Current coach N Kunjarani Devi holds the record (190kg), which she created during 2004 Athens Olympics.

Yadav said if Mirabai Chanu can improve her performance by four kilograms in the next three months, she would stand a good chance of a podium finish at the Rio Games.

"Mirabai came up with an impressive show at Tashkent and we will ensure that she works harder to improve by another four kgs. If she manages to achieve that, she has a good chance of winning a bronze medal at Olympics," Yadav said.

The bronze medallist at 2012 London Olympics in women's 48kg category had a total lift 192kg.

May 28: Former India captain and Kings XI Punjab head coach Anil Kumble is hopeful of the IPL happening this year and is not averse to the idea of conducting the cash-rich event without spectators due to the COVID-19 threat.

It is not official yet but there is speculation that the BCCI wants to hold the IPL in the October window after the tournament was postponed indefinitely earlier this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Yes we are hopeful and optimistic that there is still a possibility (to hold IPL this year) if we can cram in the schedule," Kumble was quoted as saying by Star Sports show 'Cricket Connected'.

"If we are going to have a stadium without spectators, then probably have 3 or 4 venues; there's still a possibility, we are all optimistic," said the former spinner, who is also the chairman of ICC's Cricket Committee.

Former India batsman VVS Laxman said the stakeholders can stage the league in cities which have multiple stadia to reduce travelling by players.

"Absolutely (there is chance to hold IPL this year), and also make sure that all the stakeholders have a say," he said.

"...you should identify one venue, which probably has 3 or 4 grounds; if at all you find that kind of a venue because travel is again going to be quite challenging," said the former stylish batsman.

"You don't know who's going to be where at the airports, so that I'm sure the franchises and the BCCI will be looking into."

Sydney, Mar 14: New Zealand pacer Lockie Ferguson has been placed under 24-hour isolation amid the fears of coronavirus after he reported a sore throat following the first ODI of the ongoing three-match series against Australia in Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) which the hosts won by 71 runs.

"In accordance with recommended health protocols, Lockie Ferguson has been placed in isolation at the team hotel for the next 24 hours after reporting a sore throat at the end of the first ODI," said New Zealand Cricket in a statement.

"Once the test results are received and diagnosed, his return to the team can be determined," it added.

The first ODI of the Chappell-Hadlee series was played in front of empty stands as the spectators were not allowed to be at SCG as a precautionary measure to contain the spread of coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier, Australian fast bowler, Kane Richardson was also tested for the coronavirus, after suffering from a sore throat on Thursday. That saw him left out of the squad for Friday's game but the test was negative.

Vitoria, Jul 20: Lionel Messi won a record seventh top scoring title in the Spanish league after netting twice in Barcelona's 5-0 rout of Alav s in the final round.

Messi ended with 25 goals, four more than Karim Benzema, who did not score in Real Madrid's 2-2 draw at Legan s.

Messi is the first player to finish as the league's top scorer in seven different seasons. He reached the milestone despite missing games because of an injury early in the season. The Argentine's 25 goals came in 33 matches.

Messi was tied with Telmo Zarra with six scoring titles. He has also now equaled Hugo Sanchez's feat of four straight top-scorer trophies.

"Individual achievements are always secondary," Messi said on Sunday.

"I wished it could have come along with the league title."

This is also the third successive season that Messi finished with the most assists 21 in the league.

Ansu Fati, Luis Su rez and Nelson Semedo also scored Sunday for Barcelona, which had already secured second place behind Madrid.

Fati opened the scoring in the 24th minute, Messi added to the lead 10 minutes later and Su rez closed the first-half scoring in the 44th. Semedo got on the board in the 57th and Messi in the 75th to help Barcelona rebound from a 2-1 home loss to Osasuna.

"Today things were different," Messi said.

"The team showed better attitude and commitment. It was an important step forward for us ahead of what's left in the season."

Barcelona now turns its focus to its Aug. 8 home game against Napoli in the round of 16 of the Champions League. The first leg, played before the break, ended 1-1.

Barcelona coach Quique Seti n finished under pressure after the team relinquished a two-point lead over Madrid when the league resumed following the pandemic break. It was four points back before Madrid's match at Legan s.

Barcelona defender Cl ment Lenglet had to be substituted early in the second half because of an apparent muscle injury.

Alav s, sitting in 15th, had already done enough to stay up.

BAR A "B" TEAM

American winger Konrad de la Fuente scored twice as Barcelona's "B" team beat Valladolid B to keep alive its hopes of reaching the second division next season. The victory put Barcelona in the second round of the promotion playoffs.

The 19-year-old De la Fuente, who recently had his contract with Barcelona extended through the 2021-22 season, scored in each half.
