Indian win lift South Asian Basketball Championship

Asian Basketball Championship Kathmandu, May 18: The Indian men`s team completed the formalities with a 108-32 win over Maldives to be crowned the champions of the third South Asian Basketball Association Championship here on Saturday.

India`s suffocating half court defense meant that Maldives was rarely able to get within 15 feet of the basket while India virtually lived in the paint.

Forwards Amjyot Singh, Riken Pethani and Centre Amrit Mann combined for more than 10 dunks in the lopsided contest.

Such was the size mismatch that the tallest Maldives player was almost a foot shorter than India`s 7ft centre Amrit Mann.

By halftime India led by a whopping 64-16 margin and after threatening to cross the 100 point scoring barrier in the earlier matches, finally registered a 108-32 triple digit victory today.

With this win, India finished an unbeaten 4-0 in the tournament after earlier beating Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal.

As the number one team in South Asia, India have now qualified for the much tougher Asia Cup to be held in Wuhan, China in mid-July, where sterner tests against Asian powerhouses China, Iran and Philippines await.

Virat Kohli only Indian again in Forbes' list of highest-paid athletes

New York, May 30: Cricket superstar Virat Kohli remains the only Indian in the Forbes' list of world's highest-paid athletes with total earnings of USD 26 million, jumping to the 66th spot from 100 in the 2020 standings.

Kohli's earnings from endorsement stand at USD 24 million and USD 2 million from salary/winnings. The 31-year-old is also the only cricketer in the top-100 list.

With earnings of USD 25 million, Kohli was ranked 100th in 2019 and 83rd in 2018 with USD 24 million.

Tennis legend Roger Federer has toped the list for the first time with earnings of USD 106.3 million, rising from fifth place last year.

Football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are second and third respectively with earnings of USD 105 and USD 104 million.

The others in the top-10 are Neymar (football), LeBron James (basketball), Stephen Curry (basketball), Kevin Durrant (basketball), Tigers Woods (golf), Kirk Cousins (American football) and Carson Wentz (American football).

The athletes' earnings have been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic which led to suspension of sporting activities all around the world.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly in home quarantine after elder brother Snehasish tests positive for Covid-19

Kolkata, Jul 16: BCCI president Sourav Ganguly on Wednesday went into home quarantine after his elder brother and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) joint secretary Snehasish Ganguly tested positive for Covid-19.

Snehasish, a former Bengal first-class player, has been admitted to the Belle Vue hospital in Kolkata after his COVID report came positive.

"He was suffering from fever for the last few days and his test report came positive today. He's been admitted to Belle Vue Hospital," a CAB official said.

"The reports arrived late in the evening. As per health protocols, even Sourav will have to be in home quarantine for a stipulated period," a source close to the BCCI President added.

Snehasish had shifted to their ancestral house, where Sourav is based, in Behala after his wife and in-laws at his Mominpur residence tested positive for the dreaded virus.

The former India captain was, however, unavailable for a comment on the development.

Recently, during an interview to India Today, Sourav had spoken about how life around him has changed, making people more vulnerable.

"My brother visits our factories everyday and he is more at risk," the former batting star had said

India beat New Zealand in Super Over to take unassailable 3-0 lead in T20 series

Hamilton, Jan 29: India defeated New Zealand in the third T20 International via Super Over to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series here on Wednesday.

India posted a competitive 179 for five at Seddon Park after being sent into bat. Opener Rohit Sharma top scored for India with a 65-run knock while skipper Virat Kohli contributed 38 runs in team's total.

Later, skipper Kane Williamson smashed a 48-ball 95 but New Zealand faltered in the final over to take the match into the Super Over.

Needing nine runs of the last over, New Zealand lost Williamson and Ross Taylor to finish at 179 for six and tie the match.

In the Super Over, New Zealand scored 17, a target which India overwhelmed in the final ball with Rohit smashing Tim Southee for two consecutive sixes.
