Indira Canteens, the Karnataka government sponsored chain of desi fast-food joint, are expected to start functioning in all taluk headquarters in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts from January 1, 2018.
At a Cabinet meeting presided by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, the Municipal Administration Department was directed to identify locations for establishment of 246 Indira Canteens in all taluk and district headquarters in the state including the coastal region by November 17. Buildings of all canteens would be completed by December 17.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday after the Cabinet meeting, Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs T.B. Jayachandra said the canteens would begin operations from January 1 next year. The canteens would be established near bus stations, hospitals, railway stations and in areas where the population is not less than one lakh, he said.
A sum of Rs 185 crore would be spent on building infrastructure for the canteens, while the daily expenses for running these canteens would be Rs 29 lakh and monthly expenditure would be around Rs 9 crore, he added.
